To buy medication from overseas?

I suffer with BED (Binge Eating disorder), it's getting progressively worse.

I've seen the doctor (who told me there's nothing they can do).

I've been referred to a counselling service with the NHS, I'm on a 10 month waiting list.

I've bought countless books.

Read countless stuff online.

Joined countless groups on social media.

Contacted BEAT & been to OA the lot!

I'm at my wits end, clothes are getting tighter and I'm going to bed absolutely stuffed from the day......I feel like my quality of life is absolute shit.

WIBU to just order some stuff from American and take it?? I know it's dangerous but so is binge eating, it's slowly killing me.

What medication is it?

How is it supposed to treat this condition?

Badbadtromance · 01/05/2018 18:09

Depends what it is

gwenneh · 01/05/2018 18:10

Yes, YABU.

If you're talking about phentermine, it could literally kill you -- it has to be taken under medical supervision.

And it also doesn't work long term.

Been there, done that.

gwenneh · 01/05/2018 18:11

All phentermine will do is make you feel full. And if you're still eating after you feel full now, it's not going to change just because you've taken the meds.

TroubledLichen · 01/05/2018 18:12

I’m so sorry you’re struggling, could you pay for a couple of private counselling sessions whilst you wait for the NHS referral to come through? Or go back to your GP and ask about medication? Buying drugs online can be very dangerous, the drugs in question may be unsuitable for you based on your medical history, you could suffer a side effect and that’s even if you get the drug you want. A good case scenario would be that you get sugar pills, bad case is you buy a dangerous fake with god knows what chemicals in it.

PersianCatLady · 01/05/2018 18:12

Phentermine
So not a medication to treat the condition at all, just a dangerous drug that is very similar to amphetamine.

MyGrassNeedsCutting · 01/05/2018 18:13

I'm looking at getting Vyvanse, it's shown to decrease binge eating during studies.

Il be honest, I'm so desperate I'm willing to try anything right now.

I did look to go private but the kind of treatment I need is £80 an hour

OP posts:
gwenneh · 01/05/2018 18:15

Vyvanse is phentermine.

It HAS to be taken with medical supervision because it is dangerous.

It WILL NOT stop you from eating when you're full, and you say you're going to bed stuffed. It isn't what you're looking for.

MyGrassNeedsCutting · 01/05/2018 18:18

I panic every night because I know the next day is going to be exactly the same.

I've just looked online to see what medication can be given in the UK and they offer fluoxetine.....I've been on it for months Hmm it's not helped at all

OP posts:
gwenneh · 01/05/2018 18:22

I have been there. There are days when I'm still there.

I've taken Vyvanse. It's not the answer you're looking for. At best it isn't going to help. At worst, it could damage your health long-term or kill you. That's why it needs to be taken under professional monitoring -- while I was on it, I had to be monitored every two weeks.

It's also not a long-term solution. Stop taking it, and everything is right back where it was.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 01/05/2018 18:23

I had fluoxetine (Prozac) at a 60mg dose for bulimia. Didn’t do anything.

Which really suggests the problem is behaviour based rather than a chemical imbalance.

Don’t buy meds from abroad- you don’t know what’s in them. I think you should go back to the GP and tell them just how desperate you’re feeling and that you feel this is your only resort.Flowers

MyGrassNeedsCutting · 01/05/2018 18:23

I only stop eating once I'm uncomfortably full.

My brain tells me I'm still hungry until it's expanded ridiculously.

I think I'd do well with the gastric balloon but I can't afford it right now Sad

OP posts:
gwenneh · 01/05/2018 18:26

I don't think you'd be a great candidate for that either because it's still possible to overeat (and do physical damage to yourself) when you have a gastric balloon. You'll still be able to do it same with phentermine. Neither of these things will change the root behaviour.

Can you afford to go private for other treatment options?

Daisymay2 · 01/05/2018 18:27

The NHS website has a section of buying medicines from abroad. Also look up counterfeit medicines.
There are some good websites but there are many that are not. Even in the uK you need to be careful- there are regular reports of prosecutions for selling medicines illegally but at least you can check whether they are legitimate pharmacies

PersianCatLady · 01/05/2018 19:06

Vyvanse is phentermine
No it isn't.

Phentermine is an amphetamine-like drug and Vyvanse is lisdexamphetamine.

PersianCatLady · 01/05/2018 19:08

Vyvanse (brand name for lisdexamphetamine) is known as Elvanse in the UK and is only licensed for ADHD.

It is a controlled drug and has only been available here since 2015.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 01/05/2018 19:17

Please don't take the phentermine. I took it 12 years ago to try to loose weight. It was given to me by a doctor who used to run slimming clinics in my town. It later turned out that she had previously been struck off. She was later jailed.
It fucked my thyroid up and I now have to take thyroxine. I also have a host of other autoimmune diseases and an incurable cancer. My consultants are all if the opinion that this drug set off a chain reaction

MyGrassNeedsCutting · 01/05/2018 19:20

I just know that if this continues it's going to cause diabetes, I'm already at risk as it is.

I've previously successfully lost weight but I've no idea how I managed to stick to it so long! It feels near impossible now

I mean this in the nicest possible way but no pill is going to instantly solve this for you.

In fact thinking that there is a miracle cure may even be making it harder for you to try and manage this on your own.

Phentermine is a schedule IV drug so I doubt that anything you order online is actually going to be phentermine.

Bumshkawahwah · 01/05/2018 19:26

Be very wary of drugs bought online. You’ve no idea what you might be getting - counterfeit drugs are a huge business.

MyGrassNeedsCutting · 01/05/2018 21:30

It's crazy because I'm a very rational person, I've been advocating the whole "no quick fix" to people for years about weight loss. I won't cut calories drastically to lose weight, I do it slowly and steadily.

I've got the tools to do it, I just feel compelled to binge. Sad

OP posts:
agnurse · 01/05/2018 21:53

From what you describe, Vyvanse is a stimulant medication. It's an amphetamine derivative. You would need to check UK law but it's likely a controlled substance (most amphetamine derivatives are because they can be addicted). If it turns out to be a controlled substance, you could get in serious legal trouble for bringing it across international borders.

LifeIsFullOfKumquats · 01/05/2018 21:58

You don't mention your BMI so I'm not sure if it would be suitable, but have you looked at liraglutide? You can only get it privately in the U.K. at the moment but I've heard really positive things about it, and it's been used for years for Type 2 diabetes. Might be worth a look.

PersianCatLady · 02/05/2018 10:14

Vyvanse is called Elvanse in the UK.

It is only licensed for ADHD where methylphenidate does not work or the patient has swallowing difficulties.

It is a class B drug and can only be prescribed for the first time by a consultant psychiatrist or specialist ADHD clinic.

You will not be able to buy this genuine medicine online from any online pharmacy.

toolonglurking · 02/05/2018 11:20

It doesn't sound like medication will help. If you can scrape together the money for private counselling I think you should, that's likely the only thing that will have any positive long term impact.
