DD's MMR has been delayed on the advice of Drs (run of ill health at 1 year made them wonder if immunocompromised in some way - she had 6 months of vicious back to back infections that led to multiple admissions via A&E), but we got the all-clear, 'just bad luck, and a nasty, tenacious case bronchiolitis' and now there's measles in our local community so.... she's 2 and having it tomorrow.

She's only having the MMR - the other 12 month vaccinations (late too) will be given in a couple of months time. We're splitting them out - not for any defined medical reason - but because of her extreme high temps after all previous vaccinations, and the fact that she just reacts strongly to vaccinations, viruses, bacterial infections... she gets so unwell with all of it.

Im not anti-vaxx, and while I know there's no proven link between MMR and autism, but I am very aware that vaccine injuries DO happen. I am an anxious mother, in therapy for over 18 months for PPA/PPD- so please do - for AIBU - be gentle with me - and share your 'debunking the myth' MMR stories. She simply HAS to have this vaccination tomorrow, and I'm v anxious about it.

My ds has the first mmr then I noticed he had autistic traits. He is 18 now so was around the time of the scare about it all. I put off his booster as I was terrified. There was so much bad information out there and the internet wasn’t what it is now.
He did get measles. He was poorly but not life threatening poorly.
I read up about it over the years and he had his booster in secondary school. He is still aspy but it didn’t get worse which was my fear when he was little.
My dd had had both mmr prior to this.
I think it has to be your decision based on your child and what the drs say.
Good luck.

dangermouseisace · 30/04/2018 22:57

My son had bronchiolitis a few times- hospital stay etc. Had MMR fine. Got a bit snotty but that was all. Hope it goes well OP.

JontyDoggle37 · 30/04/2018 23:00

I had mmr. My child had mmr. We are fine, as is my husband, all our friends and extended family and in fact millions and millions of people around the UK. And my son was ill for about a year at the same age, bad enough they tested for cystic fibrosis because of severe recurrent infections. and he had the mmr. And he is absolutely fine.

Pebblespony · 30/04/2018 23:01

Everyone in my extended family has had the vaccine. About 60 of us. All perfectly fine. You never hear the good stories because they are non-stories.

Sundayspilot · 30/04/2018 23:02

You'll be fab, OP Smile my DS had his MMR along with varicella and sailed through. He cried for the poke then forgot about it 30 seconds later. No after effects

Pebblespony · 30/04/2018 23:03

I will say though that my mother got rubella as a child and it was very life altering. She's almost deaf and has had many, many operations since the age of 13. It's a dangerous illness.

Bearfrills · 30/04/2018 23:05

DD was in hospital with bronchiolitis as a baby and every cold she caught would go straight to her chest for ages afterwards. She was fine with her MMR.

FASH84 · 30/04/2018 23:05

Me, and DB had MMR and booster both fine, even after a boy at school punched me hard in the arm straight after the booster, he did it to everyone and being made to go to swimming lesson at school a week later and swimming teacher fishing pussy lumps out of the pool with a cup, as we shouldn't have been swimming that soon (it was the nineties parents just told you to get in with what teachers said)... DH did not have MMR has had measles and mumps.

CruCru · 30/04/2018 23:06

Both of my children had the MMR and were absolutely fine.

I remember having measles when I was three. I spent the week lying down with the curtains drawn so that my eyes didn't hurt. People have forgotten how dreadful measles is.

CartoonsAndVodka · 30/04/2018 23:07

My parents both pre-date vaccines and had measles in childhood. It damaged their vision and both were very short-sighted as a result.

Good luck with your DD. Flowers

Yvest · 30/04/2018 23:09

All 3 of mine had MMR. All my NCT group gave MMR to their eldest, and their middles abc their youngest. All my close friends gave MMR, all my siblings gave MMR. Not one has had an issue.

TheBigFatMermaid · 30/04/2018 23:09

My 3 DC had the MMR, they did not get measles mumps or rubella, I had the MMR as an adult, entering a nursing degree, I was probably immune to at least measles, but, well I was fine.

WhatisaNarwhal · 30/04/2018 23:09

thank you all. Smile

I know it's daft. I've had the MMR... FIVE times (long story) They even gave me it the day I had DD and the booster a month after (rubella non-immune) and never worried for myself.

I think it's that active/passive harm dichotomy - but the likelihood of passive harm is so much greater given the recent measles outbreak (In my STREET shudder) I can't really let it tip the balance any longer.

Eeesh.

Bearfrills · 30/04/2018 23:10

And to add to my post above, I've had the MMR myself several times with no ill effects. Every pregnancy I test out as not immune to Rubella so after every pregnancy I have had to have the MMR because my GP doesn't offer Rubella as a seperate vaccine. I've had it eight times now - once as a teen, once during fertility testing, and then once after each of my six pregnancies.

gnushoes · 30/04/2018 23:13

Mine all had it (the eldest two at the height of the panic). Complete non-issue. Since we live in Woo city there were a lot of unvaccinated kids - cue panicky MMRs all around us when real measles arrived. My sister and I had measles as children. It wasn't nice.

TheBigFatMermaid · 30/04/2018 23:13

My ds has the first mmr then I noticed he had autistic traits.

Please tell me you know this was not as a result of the MMR, just the timing of noticing autistic traits! Andrew Wakefield was discredited and struck off due to his claims. His research was weak and defective, although his voice was loud!

GummyGoddess · 30/04/2018 23:16

Dc had his, he barely flinched and was easily distracted by a milky way celebration and stopped crying immediately (to see if I had anything else!). He didn't have a temperature and didn't get the rash a few weeks later either.

I had the mmr just before I went to uni and didn't feel unwell or get a rash either.

ichifanny · 30/04/2018 23:18

Not positive MMR as such but I caught measles as hadn’t yet had my Mmr and I’ve been partially deaf now as the result of nerve damage on my ears from the virus .

Ansumpasty · 30/04/2018 23:20

My son got a high temp from his baby vaccinations, so much so that he was hospitalised at 8 weeks old because it wouldn’t come down.
I DREADED the mmr.
Guess what, it was the only vaccination he’s had that he got NO symptoms from, not even a slight temp or a sniffle. Same with booster! My other child was also fine with it.

MonumentVal · 30/04/2018 23:23

I had MMR when ds was a few months as measles was going round locally. Was very annoyed at how many HVs and nurses told me he would be fine because I was breastfeeding, even after I explained I'd never had measles nor mumps nor MMR.
Ds and dd both had all theirs without even a fever. Only problem was I gave ds a Smartie before the 3y one, then the rest of the tube, and by the time we were leaving he wanted another jab so he could have more Smarties!
Friend's little girl got measles just before 12 months so too young for the jab. There were a nasty couple weeks and nights in hospital but she made a full recovery over some months. Unlike my college friend who is blind from measles.

Teachtolive · 30/04/2018 23:29

My dd was absolutely fine after the MMR. You wouldn't have known she'd had any jab.

As a baby I was hospitalised with measles for over 2 weeks with extremely high temperatures that were difficult to control. Mobile I know has ever had any ill effect as a result of MMR.

I can sympathise with your anxiety though, best of luck tomorrow. I'm sure your dd will be fine.

PearsandCustard · 30/04/2018 23:29

I could have written Ansumpasty's post. Almost exactly the same experience, DC1 hospitalised for raging temperature post baby vacs but absolutely fine with MMR. DC2 absolutely fine. DC2 also suffered badly with bronchiolitis in the first year and I was very concerned around vaccinations but no issues at all with them.

Teachtolive · 30/04/2018 23:29

Mobile??? No one! Stupid autocorrect

MilesHuntsWig · 30/04/2018 23:32

My DD has had it and DH wanted to be there (he’s a softie) but got caught in traffic and was late. He met us in the waiting room, was playing with a very cheeky DD and asked when we’d be going in. “We’ve already been in” I said. She barely took any notice and is now a healthy, and even cheekier, 6 yo.

Hope all goes as well for you. X

slightlyglittermaned · 30/04/2018 23:35

DS had MMR booster late due to panicky father spending too much time "researching" with Dr Google instead of real doctors Hmm. He had a slightly sore arm, and a little bit of rash a couple of weeks afterwards on that arm, but has been absolutely fine as expected and told EVERYONE how very very brave he was at the doctors Grin

Measles is nasty - you are doing absolutely the right thing to protect your DD. Take distractions/rewards with you if poss!
