To have a nap in my car during my lunch break?

I'm 7 months pregnant and started to get very tired in the afternoons. I have a 2yr old who is waking in the night currently so that is not helping. I found it helps me focus better in the afternoons if I have a 20min power nap in my lunch break. My boss recently called me in and said he is not happy about me sleeping in my car as it looks bad on the organisation I work for. He told me i can use the meeting room at work. Office is a converted house in a residential area and the meeting room is the only space where others can eat lunch and be away from their desks. I would feel very uncomfortable having the room closed off to colleagues so I can sleep. My car is parked down the road from the office and I bring a blanket and set an alarm so I don't overrun my lunch hour. I told him I hear what he said but am planning on continuing to take lunchtime naps. AIBU?

I agree with many pps that trying to stop you reflects badly on the company.

blackteasplease · 30/04/2018 17:13

millicent I shouldn't have laughed at that but I did I'm afraid.

I think it would be so great if companies provided nap rooms! They won't of course as it would take up alot of space and therefore money but it would increase afternoon productivity alot I reckon.

YANBU! Entirely your choice. If he objects it's his problem

RhurbabAndCustard · 30/04/2018 17:39

It's your lunch break and you are free to do what you want. Ignore your boss and carry on doing it

cate16 · 30/04/2018 17:43

I'm another employer that would be upset to think a pregnant member of staff needed to sleep in her car... but I'm not against people napping in cars in general.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/04/2018 17:46

Some companies support naps, including Google, which has map pods. Perhaps your boss should get one of these.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/04/2018 17:46

NAP pods fgs.

i’m 20 weeks pregnant, often have a 2 hour break in the middle of my work day and have been driving to a supermarket car park and napping there! i park at the furthest end away from other cars and wear sunglasses so nobody can see me. YANBU.

I remember pulling up at motorway services and a couple were asleep in their car with the engine running. They had gathered quite a crowd who were checking they hadnt got a hosepipe leading from the exhaust. I didn't stay as there were enough people gawping to help. A little later I spotted them overtaking me on the motorway (distinctive car with foreign plates) so clearly it had been a nap rather than a suicide attempt.

Sofabitch · 30/04/2018 18:07

I keep a pillow and blanket in my car for this exact reason.

This and a few sun blinds...although the couple of hundred pound i spent getting my car windows blacked out was the best money i ever spent!

ShowOfHands · 30/04/2018 18:17

I think he's probably worried that he's not supporting you properly and therefore is offering a safer option to his pregnant colleague.

He hasn't said he disagrees with the napping, in fact he's encouraging it, I suspect he just worries as a boss that he should be offering a place at work for you to snooze.

When heavily pg with my first, I worked by a lake and kipped under a tree during my lunch.

Wallywobbles · 30/04/2018 18:21

I use to nap pretty much on a cliff face - had a 2 hour lunch break (love France). Got an awesome tan in the summer. It was in the centre of town but I was invisible.

NewYearNewMe18 · 30/04/2018 18:40

Your employer has to make reasonable adjust to your work environment - and that includes rest spaces.

I'm with your boss, napping in the car isn't deal.

As far as I'm aware ALL employers have to provide designated areas for nursing mothers to express etc, usually it is these that are dual purpose for pregnant and nursing mothers.

Chinesecrested · 30/04/2018 18:43

We used to have a man at work who would roll up in his coat and sleep under his desk in his lunch break!

polkadotpixie · 30/04/2018 18:44

I'm pregnant and had a lovely lunchtime car nap the other day

It was either that or have an unscheduled middle of the afternoon sat at my desk nap! Grin

Jael003 · 30/04/2018 18:52

I used to nap on a sofa in the back of the office when I was pregnant but had to endure nasty comments from colleagues who didn't like that I got to take my whole lunch break off while they worked through theirs. It was the kind of environment where everyone worked through, but I needed my nap and insisted on taking my full lunch break everyday, sod them.

TheChineseChicken · 30/04/2018 19:03

YABU that you can all nap that easily. I have never been able to and I'm very jealous

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 30/04/2018 19:12

YANBU to nap in your car but how on earth to you get comfy? I have a car seat base in the back of my car which makes things harder but even without it, I think I’d be cramped. Do you have a big car? I have chronic health problems and my entire working life would massively improve if I could have a day time nap!

Solola · 30/04/2018 22:22

Well I'm a pretty experienced carnapper and I don't find it that uncomfortable across the back seats - it's a Citroen Berlingo for those who are curious. Even when not at work or pregnant, if I arrive home with dc asleep in back of the car, rather than wake them sometimes I lie across the front seats and try to sleep but that is more uncomfortable (pesky handbrake). Do recommend a Berlingo with it's slidey doors for getting newborn/toddlers in car seats in a tight spot and also saves children flinging doors open and scratching a neighbouring car.

YANBU I had a colleague who used to have a nap in his camper van every lunchtime. I can't see the problem if you're not overrunning your lunchtime Confused

BillyJoel · 30/04/2018 22:45

I love a nap in the day. Used to nap under my desk at lunchtime in one big office. Wouldn't get away with that now as I snore.... I do have at least an hour in the morning before work. Took a while to find a good inconspicuous location. Love walking up in the wooded car park these days with the trees all around and the birdsong. Nicer than waking in my own bed in a terrace street.

Ontheboardwalk · 30/04/2018 22:51

Car nap! Car nap! What is this thing of beauty. I park in a multi story and need a car nap. I’m buying black out cards, pillows and a blanket for tomorrow

Pringlecat · 30/04/2018 22:53

Would you feel more comfortable if you took a 30 minute lunch break at the same time as everyone else, then had a 30-minute nap break a bit later? I.e. so you didn't feel you were taking away everyone else's lunch room?

howfaralong · 30/04/2018 22:54

I LOVE that so many people do this! Grin
