Do any non drivers not walk to nursery/pre school if it is chucking it down?

I'm being selfish to even consider not going aren't I?

DD will be dry as I'll use the buggy but I am going to be soaked. Not sure how dry my wellies and raincoat will keep me when I'm in it for an hour (30 min walk each way). Then back into them once it's time to collect her!

I will go. I'm just wondering if other people do cancel going if the weather is horrid?

The thing is, it’s OK for nursery/preschool, but what about when it’s school and compulsory? You need a brilliant raincoat & waterpoof trousers. Proper hiking weatherproof gear, not “rain resistant”.

UnaOfStormhold · 30/04/2018 08:31

As someone who hates driving, I would recommend investing in some good hiking-quality waterproof trousers and jacket. Obviously that doesn't help you today though - good luck!

PalePinkSwan · 30/04/2018 08:32

Our nursery is only ten mins away but if I’d rather keep him at home than go out in the rain then i just keep him home

PalePinkSwan · 30/04/2018 08:33

Seasalt does really good waterproof coats, you could also look at didrickson and north face.

PeonyTruffle · 30/04/2018 08:33

I am a non driver, my 3yr old is at school nursery 5 mornings a week.
I chuck my waterproof coat and wellies on, chuck him in the buggy and take him in.

It’s only rain, just get a good coat with a hood that keeps you dry and you’ll be fine Grin

BevBrook · 30/04/2018 08:35

Can you get a bus? We always walked it (DS1 too as his baby brother was in the buggy by then) apart from one time when it was snowing and DS1 was freaked out by it, so we got the bus. It’s only two or three stops but he really didn’t like the snow!

Okaynowimconfused · 30/04/2018 08:37

I will hopefully be driving soon thankfully but yes I need to pull on my big girl -waterproof- pants on and get on with it!

It doesn't help that DD is saying she doesn't want to go. She's not been there long so she's still adjusting but I must persist!

I know what you mean, but just invest in some good waterproof clothing.

PoshPenny · 30/04/2018 08:40

You need to invest in proper waterproof clothing/footwear so you stay warm/dry then it won't be an issue

BitchQueen90 · 30/04/2018 08:48

I can't drive and walk everywhere in all weathers with DS. I think I do at least 2 hours of walking every day what with school runs and work. Wellies and waterproofs!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/04/2018 08:58

Eh? First time I've heard of not going to nursery just because it's raining!

Admittedly I don't have a choice because I drop him on the way to work but...if you DON'T bring him in, aren't you then facing a long rainy day stuck indoors with an increasingly restless toddler?

diddl · 30/04/2018 09:01

I think it's fine if you know that you can go home & get changed, warm & dry.

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 30/04/2018 09:05

I'd not bother. Some days just take it easy. She's little.

Sort this driving thing out......

reallyneedmoresleep · 30/04/2018 09:05

There was a thread on here ages ago about the best waterproof jackets. Lots of hardy, mountain-dwelling folk recommended Palermo jackets. They are eye-wateringly expensive new but often appear on ebay. I picked one up on ebay for about £40 and it revolutionised my walking school-run by keeping me dry but not all sweaty.
I never considered not taking the kids to pre-school because it was raining but that was partly because we'd all go a bit nuts cooped up inside the house all day.

Slartybartfast · 30/04/2018 09:06

I knew someone who kept her dc home from school in appalling rain, the head teacher had said it was ok

Lethaldrizzle · 30/04/2018 09:07

Its just rain

Slartybartfast · 30/04/2018 09:07

ime it is much better to actually get out of the house when it is raining

MyFriendFlickaWasAHorse · 30/04/2018 09:08

I drive but I mostly walk to dd’s nursery as it’s only 15 mins away. I wouldn’t keep her off as she gets bored at home, so rainy days are better if she can go to nursery and play with other children.

HoneyBadger32 · 30/04/2018 09:09

Can you spring for a taxi on the really horrible days?

diddl · 30/04/2018 09:10

I know that a car would be handy in bad weather, but surely not full time when it's only a half hour walk each way?

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 30/04/2018 09:10

I've never driven and don't even have a license, but in 9 years of school runs wirh two children I've never once not gone because of the weather. Hey decent walking boots not wellies, and a decent coat and you're sorted. Wet trousers can be easily changed so I don't bother with waterproof over trousers personally. My boots and coat cost nearly £300 altogether but have been worth it term times over imo!

AntiHop · 30/04/2018 09:11

Taxi?

Sashkin · 30/04/2018 09:12

Yep you just need better waterproofs! Nobody enjoys going out in torrential rain, but you shouldn’t be getting wet.

OohMavis · 30/04/2018 09:13

I've kept DD off nursery today. We got absolutely soaked on the school run taking DS to school, and that was through proper waterproofs and boots. We just came home and put the kettle on. She's watching Tangled!

Poor DS will be in his P.E kit right now whilst his uniform dries off on the radiators.

It was torrential here though, the rain hurt my face.

KindergartenKop · 30/04/2018 09:14

Just go, it's a bit of rain.
