I'm being selfish to even consider not going aren't I?

DD will be dry as I'll use the buggy but I am going to be soaked. Not sure how dry my wellies and raincoat will keep me when I'm in it for an hour (30 min walk each way). Then back into them once it's time to collect her!

I will go. I'm just wondering if other people do cancel going if the weather is horrid?

30 mins walk away is really your closest nursery? How come?

Same for us. We live in a large village, the pre school is one side of it and we’re completely the other side. Bus is no use either, I’d have to walk 15 mins to get the 8.10am bus, which would get us to the pre school at 8.20am. Can’t go in until 9.
I have a car but we generally walk!

diddl · 30/04/2018 11:00

"30 mins walk away is really your closest nursery? How come?"

I was thinking that that's not bad at all!

30 mins walk is nothing.

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 30/04/2018 11:03

This was me Friday it was torrential rain and I had to take Dd to playgroup and the only way was to walk. I normally let her walk a bit because the track is hard to get the push chair up with her in it but she would have got soaked so I had to push her up a massive bumpy hill. It's about 20 minutes each way. I got home and was soaked to my underwear. I was sat under a blanket thinking I really don't want to go back out in this but I had to.

Natsku · 30/04/2018 11:03

Yeah 30 minutes is fine, for the last year of daycare I had to walk an hour and a half to take my daughter (quicker walking back because I wasn't walking at her speed but still nearly an hour), that was very unpleasant! (as often as possible OH took her on his way to work but when he couldn't I had to take her)

drivingmebananas · 30/04/2018 11:05

Of course not. That's absolutely ridiculous. Imagine not going into work because it's raining!

bobstersmum · 30/04/2018 11:07

Our nursery think im soft for keeping ds home if he's not well, if I kept him home because I didn't want to get wet they would definitely have something to eat say! Can you get a taxi?

SoyDora · 30/04/2018 11:08

To be fair OP I kept my 4 year old off pre school last week when it was sunny just so we could enjoy the weather Smile. Fully aware we won’t be able to do that when she’s at school, that’s why we thought we’d make the most of it now.

planetsweet · 30/04/2018 11:24

Yes, we're going on holiday in term time this year because it will be the last time we can go without the prices hiked! In fact I'm not sending DS back to nursery, just treating it as an extended summer holiday as he goes to school in September. I want to get a good fill of the half empty soft play/trampolining/farm visits before it gets booked out for summer. Plus it saves me a fortune and pays for a lot of the holiday!

Maryann1975 · 30/04/2018 11:28

I’ve got a car and still walk to school when it’s raining. It’s only rain and you aren’t made of sugar, you won’t melting yiu get wet!

SoyDora · 30/04/2018 11:29

Ditto with the term time holiday planetsweet, we’ve got 2 booked between now and the summer holidays to make the most of it being cheaper!

Wellthisunexpected · 30/04/2018 11:43

Yeah, we don't have this choice! I can't not go to work because we don't want to walk in the rain.

SoyDora · 30/04/2018 11:44

Wellthisunexpected the OP obviously hasn’t got to go to work though has she, or she wouldn’t be asking if she should keep her child at home.

OneStepSideways · 30/04/2018 11:48

Can you get a taxi as a one off?

I don't think it's fair to your DC not to take them.

You need waterproof trousers, raincoat with a hood (and a brim to keep the rain out of your eyes) and waterproof boots. Hiking shops sell all these. I hate walking in heavy rain too but it's less awful when you're dry and warm.

celticprincess · 30/04/2018 13:12

Hmm you need to be careful with things like this and the type of message it sends. Some children pick up on why they aren’t going in quite quickly and will use this further down the line to get out of school. DD2 has a friend at school who is often off with a cold. On the days she’s at school she’s often crying that she doesn’t want to go in and suddenly says she feels sick. She’s a generally anxious child but I think it’s compounded by giving into her all the time and thinking it’s easier just to stay home. Mine are only absent for D&V or other contagious things that require quarantine for a few days. If we stayed off for the rain we’d never be there some weeks!! Invest in some waterproofs for yourself and the kids. Mine both have waterproof trousers and jackets and wellies. My youngest used to cry when I rained heavily as it freaked her out but continuing to take her out in the rain helped. We went camping last summer for a week and it was heavy rain all week. We still went out some of the time on our waterproofs.

LupinsNotBluebells · 30/04/2018 13:35

OP, as your child is still getting to grips with nursery I'd go, so the routine carries on. Can your little one splash home in puddles with wellies so it takes longer to get home but counts as an activity.

I'd shower when little one is napping, so you have a bit of you time. I remember my aunt picking up her eldest from school with the buggy in the pouring rain. She say the oldest in the buggy, little one on her knee, cover over both of them and walked home so only she was wet. I thought it was a genius idea.

Mintychoc1 · 30/04/2018 13:36

If I didn't work I certainly wouldn't bother with pre-school when the weather was bad. What would be the point? Actual school is different obviously.

ArcheryAnnie · 30/04/2018 13:39

If you are living in the UK, yes, absolutely, YABU not to take your DC to nursery/school or anywhere else just because it's raining.

Extreme weather is only going to get worse as climate change really hits. Are you going to keep your DC indoors for the next 40 years?

Cherrypieface123 · 30/04/2018 13:39

Award for most special snowflake goes to you, OP.
It’s rain.
Not a tornado, not a hurricane, a bit of rain.
Put your waterproofs on and get on with life.
If the whole of the UK took a duvet day because of a bit of rain, there’d be no economy left!

PickAChew · 30/04/2018 13:41

I did 10 years of daily school walks, 3 times a day, at one point. I invested in some good waterproofs.

And seasalt costs are lovely. I have 2. The ones I have aren't my first choice in very heavy rain, though as they might keep me dry but the surface of the fabric gets very wet.

PickAChew · 30/04/2018 13:42

And, as my mum would say, you're not made of rice paper.

SuperMumTum · 30/04/2018 13:46

I'm flabbergasted at how few people have work/chores/other commitments that they need to get on with while their child is in nursery. Do you all sit around twiddling your thumbs waiting for pick up time?? My kids go whatever the weather because I have to go to work/shops/diy/other-things-that-small-child-will-get-in-the-way-of. There's plenty of opportunities to stay home and watch cbeebies at the weekend. Mumsnet is like a parallel universe sometimes.

Wildlingofthewest · 30/04/2018 13:47

Gosh, if people didn’t go out when it’s wet then a lot of people in the country would hardly ever go out at all!!

Get some waterproofs on and get going, it’s only a bit of rain!!!!

BeyondThePage · 30/04/2018 13:47

When the hell did nursery/pre-school get to be sooooo important?

As far as I was aware it is optional, non-compulsory to attend and no fines for not doing so. OK you may have paid , but you can choose to just not go for any reason surely. Plenty of years of school to come.

RunningHurts · 30/04/2018 13:52
