Urgent passport advice needed!

Dd had a fall out with her dad a few months ago. She is 16yrs old. She needed her passport for her college application so I asked her dad for it. Because he applied for it a few years ago to take her on holiday he has always kept possession of it until she needs it. So he gave me it so she could use it, then asked for it straight back. I said no as it's hers and she should be allowed to keep it to use as and when she needs it. Yesterday, he said to the other 2 dd's who have been for weekend contact "f**k her, she can keep her passport as I've cancelled it anyway"
Can he actually ring up and cancel her passport? She is so upset.

I think you need to contact the passport office and ask them.

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 29/04/2018 20:51

When XH and I were in the middle of separating, my passport mysteriously went missing. I reported it lost online and applied for a new one. So I would guess that he could have cancelled it - but I don’t think he could have replace it. Now she’s 16, can’t she apply for a replacement herself?

Noqonterfy · 29/04/2018 20:51

He may have told them it's lost or something so it is possible to cancel it that way.

blueskyinmarch · 29/04/2018 20:52

Call them tomorrow and ask? I would imagine if she is using it for ID purposes it would be fine anyway but i can't imagine how he could cancel it.

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 29/04/2018 20:53

(My replacement passport needed a new photo - which is why I don’t think he could have got another one in her name. This was in 2016, so recent.)

SoftSheen · 29/04/2018 20:53

He could have reported that the passport is lost. Get DD to call the passport office ASAP and find out what has happened. I'm not surprised DD is upset, her Dad sounds like an absolute tool Hmm

Fruitcorner123 · 29/04/2018 20:55

I imagine you can cancel it but whether he has or not is another matter. He could only have replaced it by forging her signature and somehow getting hold of suitable photos. (Why would he do this anyway?)

Agree that you should phone the passport office tomorrow.

Meadowflowers · 29/04/2018 21:37

He's doing it to try and control her and force her into going to see him. He's spent the last year bullying her and manipulating her. It's been through court, they said she doesn't have to see him. I think he's doing it to punish her. He hasn't tried to replace it, he's cancelled it to stop her coming on holiday with me.

At 16, wouldn't that be classed as an adult passport? In which case, can another person cancel it???

Pumpkintopf · 29/04/2018 21:47

When are you going on hold? Do you have time to check this with the passport office and renew/reissue if needed? Can you explain the issue with her dad if he has in fact cancelled it, to make sure he can do the same thing with any replacement you get - block him from administering it or something?

Pumpkintopf · 29/04/2018 21:48

On hols that should have said

Meadowflowers · 29/04/2018 22:38

We're not going til August.

OP posts:
MyotherUsernameisaPun · 29/04/2018 22:41

You have time to apply for a replacement before August even if he has somehow cancelled it. Speak to the passport office tomorrow x

PersianCatLady · 29/04/2018 22:41

He sounds petty because it is as if he doesn't want to have paid for the passport that your DD uses to go on holiday with you.

Contact passport office ASAP and get it sorted out with them

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/04/2018 22:43

I doubt he can because she is considered to be an adult for a passport. I think I might ring them to give them the heads up

Fruitcorner123 · 29/04/2018 22:44

Yes you have ages to apply for another one and whatever the outcome of your conversation with the passport office best to keep it secret from him. If he has no contact with her does he know about the holiday?

NewYearNewMe18 · 29/04/2018 22:45

Why would he tell you ? To cause maximum problems, he'd cancel and keep quiet and let you find out trying to go through passport control.

Puffycat · 29/04/2018 22:48

There’s a thing where a parent can cancel a passport for under 16’s if they fear they are being radicalised, if they are between 16/18 you can apply for cancellation if you’re worried about their ‘wellbeing’
Not sure about the finer details, but I would be concerned that he could do it.
He’s being a total dick btw.
If it’s cancelled, she may have trouble in the future getting another or renewing.
You need to get hold of her passport!

Yambabe · 29/04/2018 22:54

He can report it as lost or stolen I think.

Best thing is if she calls them tomorrow. 0300 222 0000

lhastingsmua · 29/04/2018 23:01

I’m a bit confused, is the passport still in your possession? If so, can you not ring the passport office and check?

If it is cancelled, just apply for a new one? As she has already had a passport, it will be easier to get a replacement.

lhastingsmua · 29/04/2018 23:02

Her dad is a twat, but he can’t stop her from getting another passport

lhastingsmua · 29/04/2018 23:03

The one upside to getting her a new one would be a brand new passport number that he doesn’t have access to and so can’t pull another stunt like this again!

Majamandy · 30/04/2018 00:44

You have plenty of time to get a new passport if that is necessary.

Just call the passport office tomorrow so that you can get it sorted as soon as possible and work out what he's actually done.

blueskyinmarch · 30/04/2018 06:13

If she gets a new one now it will be an adult one so I would imagine more difficult for him to interfere with.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 30/04/2018 06:27

Will he let the younger two have their passports to go on holiday with you? Will he let them go with you? I would be wanting their passports and a permission letter (or court order) sooner rather than later given what we already know about his 'charming persona'.
