... and live somewhere like this...
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-58908215.html
with DH, DD (dear dog), DD (dear duck), DC (dear cat) and a DC (dear child)... Hmm

(lighthearted!) (... I think?! Although I reallly want to! - how difficult is it living remotely?) Confused

CherryBlossomSeason · 28/04/2018 17:01

What a dream!

ShweShwe · 28/04/2018 17:02

I would! Imagine the peace. But also - if it snowed you could be stuck for days. I still would though.

Els1e · 28/04/2018 17:04

No idea about living remotely but it is beautiful. Imagine when it snows, you would be cut off for days.

Loonoon · 28/04/2018 17:08

It would be great for a while but if I lived anywhere that remote for longer than about two weeks I would become a feral hermit.

FairyCustard · 28/04/2018 17:09

Gosh there is nothing I would love more!!

zinger · 28/04/2018 17:10

That's my dream too. A full pantry and larder freezer, would need to see anyone for days!!!

WorraLiberty · 28/04/2018 17:13

Unreliable Wifi?

No local off licence? Shock

No supermarket delivery?

No pizza delivery? Shock Shock

No, I just couldn't do it!

TheoryPractical · 28/04/2018 17:21

my. idea. of. heaven.

but no trees Sad

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 17:32

@Theory - I'm sure you could ask the owner of the adorning 1000k acres of moorland if you could a plant a little forest. That's what I'd do.
@Worra - I'd have to get some very characterful chickens! ...oh yeh, and actually learn how to cook Hmm
@zinger - exactly! if I could get wifi, I'd make the family watch River Cottage (for the umpteenth time) and learn to live off the land!
@Loonoo - probably. Grin that's my slight concern!!

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 28/04/2018 17:33

That's my idea of hell. I don't do remote.

LanguidLobster · 28/04/2018 17:34

You have a duck?

RainbowCookie · 28/04/2018 18:06

What does one do in the powder room?

CactusFred · 28/04/2018 18:15

Yes please!

How lovely.

Spicylolly · 28/04/2018 18:21

I'd move here www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-57937930.html

Everyday I'd dress like a princess and swan around with a small fluffy dog and make DH trot around on a white horse in full knights get up Wink

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 28/04/2018 18:24

move there. nothing in the UK is more than 20 mins from a shop..... This isn't montana. Live your dream. Life is happening right now.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/04/2018 18:29

Mountains: you haven’t been to the Scottish Highlands then?

There are PLENTY of places in the UK mor than 20 mins from a shop, I don’t quite understand what you mean.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 18:31

@Rainbow - You had me so confused! I was thinking it would have been odd to have a room which was specially designed to powder your nose, far away from civilisation up in the hills!!! Grin

... I'm sure the animals would really appreciate nicely done makeup...

(she's called Emily Duck @Languid , and would follow her humans everywhere if she could!)

  • I think it's really cool though - that something once used to create destruction, is now used for eco-friendly goodness!!
@Laurie - not at all? But it's so free-ing!

If either of you need to work, it'd involve a lot of opening and closing gates in high winds and torrential rain (both together). They always have snow, every winter. If you run out of milk, it's a long drive to pick some up. It will be more expensive to heat than you can imagine - you will probably have the central heating on all year. There is unlikely to be mobile phone coverage.

You could try planting a little forest, but you will find, even if you protect the saplings from rabbits, voles, sheep and deer, that growth will be exceedingly slow - the landscape is treeless for a reason. Living off the land won't be easy - the growing season is much shorter, and you are high enough up that you'll be restricted as to what you can grow.

A few miles away from you is Alston, which hit the news a couple of years back as all the men were advertising for women - any women - to come and marry them because all the local women had got out at the first opportunity.

On the other hand, just down the road is Nenthead, which is heaven for aficionados of mining archaeology - masses of underground exploration to do. And caving further down Weardale.

But if you want the flavour of living remotely in an old northern farmhouse, try
www.landmarktrust.org.uk/search-and-book/properties/cowside-5807

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 18:37

@Spicy you could have a very large white dog. And a wolf hound or two.
Good god though - why are these always POA. ... I might want to spend my millions without having to go through the palavour of asking them how much it is Grin .
I was concerned that it only had 8 bedrooms - but then I realised that it does have a gate house and cottage, so my servants could live there.
My other concern is that it's a bit close to civilisation. WIBU to put a moat around it to keep the peasants out?

I was sorely tempted by a similar place that came up for sale 3-4 years back. It would have been possible, within our budget. Common sense prevailed. Having to do a shop when the weather has been "let's not bother to get out of bed today" bad for the last week is something I realise I'm not as good at as I think.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 18:41

@Mere - unfortunately, for me, it's a bit of a dream.
However, to answer your problems -
I'd get a goat or two for milk.
I'd buy ridiculously expensive tree guards for my forest.
If we went caving all the time, we'd end up so wet that the outdoors wet wouldn't really matter.
And, finally, were the women running away from the men or the area? - that is the question! Because I'm rather fond of my DH so I wouldn't have any issues on that side!
Also, that holiday cottage looks fabulous! - I'll bear it in mind!

Myfamily- that is gorgeous!

The80sweregreat · 28/04/2018 18:46

too rural for me, but it is lovely.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/04/2018 19:01

You'd need good tree guards if you had goats! But if you can buy sheep cheese, presumably you could drink sheep milk?

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 19:12

Ooo that's a good point about the goats. I don't know about sheep milk? Goodness only knows what it tastes like?!! - although, I suspect its a lot sweeter than cows, going by lambs-milk dried powder. although, even if you can, there is something that intrinsically puts me off the idea of sheep milk - but I don't know why?!
If not - what about a pet Jersey Cow? Could you keep one up there?
