... and live somewhere like this...
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-58908215.html
with DH, DD (dear dog), DD (dear duck), DC (dear cat) and a DC (dear child)... Hmm

(lighthearted!) (... I think?! Although I reallly want to! - how difficult is it living remotely?) Confused

You would curse it come winter. Inaccesible roads, driving snow, ice.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 19:41

@Sonja - that's probably part of the appeal ... A roaring fire with no where to go - bliss!! (... but you're probably right, and it might be a bit depressing after a while.)
Although, I do believe on one of the photos, quite close to the house there's a main road across the moors, which presumably would get snow ploughed. With a Landy and snow chains, I think it would be possible to escape if I needed too...?

Oh that place is beautiful - but it does look like it’s very exposed to the elements.

I don't understand how you can be off-grid but still benefit from a feed in tariff. Surely it's one or the other?

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/04/2018 20:48

The road will be cleared but it won't be the highest priority. (I have a friend who lives near there, and who really curses the snow for the number of days he can't get out to do things).

Jersey cow probably wouldn't like the weather, but there are cattle who survive all the year on Yorkshire Dales (which doesn't have quite such extreme weather). Even they are normally taken down to the coast for calving.

Have you looked at it on Streetview yet? The minor road to Coalcleugh is better than expected, but note all the horizontally striped poles standing by the road - they're there to help you find the road in snow and tell you how deep it is. The Google car went through in March, but there's still snow lying in the shadow of all the walls.

The house itself is about 400yds from the road, reached via a rough track with a thick band of grass down the middle. But you do have 3 trees! And you're only a 45min walk from the pub.

Don't watch this video else you'll really want to live there! A winter drive on the A689.

YAonlyBU if you don't go running around in a red dress singing kate Bush.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 21:21

@Mere - Oh wow. I do believe that that video is probably the most boring and yet the most beautiful one I've ever watched! Grin Three trees? - what more could a girl (&family/pets) want?!
@Dairy - but that's a requirement, surely? ;)

@ItWill - I think, even though its called a feed in tariff, it's actually a reward for avoiding fossil fuels? I may be wrong - but I came across this web page - info.cat.org.uk/questions/fits/can-off-grid-renewable-energy-systems-get-feed-in-tariff-payments/

Thanks Myfamily, I never knew that!

starkid · 30/04/2018 14:54

That's so cute. The kitchen reminds me of 'The Burrow'.

There's a little village a 5 min drive away, so not too secluded.
Could definitely do with some trees or plants!

I'd be useless living there, can't be more than 10 min walk away from a shop/cash point to feel comfortable! The house is beautiful though :)

RabbityMcRabbit · 30/04/2018 14:54

I'd do it in a heartbeat. The price tag is pretty hefty though

I've nearly accepted a property that was off grid as this one is. It's lovely and remote but most of us have to work. I live in a remote area.

You would have to have mixed fuel to power your property and it's likely that it has a diesel generator as backup as well as wind. Your water has to be tested annually as it comes from a well.

My job involves properties such as these and people don't tend to stay there long as the remoteness can be a killer as well as restricted access to work and facilities due to inclement weather, bad quality lanes and unreliable power sources. The people I talk to who have lived on these properties long for the convenience of mains electricity!
Fabulous location for a 'get away from it all' holiday...but the stunning bleakness will eat into your soul. And you have to be extremely self-reliant, handy with DIY skills, healthy, etc.

omg when I am older and not reliant on being near my place of work/ ex husband (father of kids).

That's less than I'm buying for now but so much nicer!
