to rant about the leniency of sentences dished out in this country? The court case of the 2 brothers in Coventry who were run over is a ghastly read.

30 previous convictions for driving without licence and insurance.

High on cocaine (4 times over the limit. News to me that there is a limit for cocaine Hmm).

Driving at 60mph in a 30mph area.

Hit and killed 2 boys aged 6 and 2.

Hit them with such velocity that one of them was thrown high into the air and landed some distance away.

Drove off and attempted to leave the scene.

Sentenced to NINE years. Nine sodding years.

Not only were the consequences in this case so high, but it was also caused by genuine, thought out, recklessness. A momentary lapse of judgement, this was not. A very clear accident waiting to happen.

Would love it if anyone could give any insight into the justification for 9 years? Is this also a situation where, in reality, he’ll be out in half that?

That's appalling.

That poor family.

This is the kind of situation where a petition, a protest should be started.

It will be that the specifics of the situation meant that that was the highest sentence possible I assume.

I hope he gets put through hell in there.

ANameforToday · 27/04/2018 17:43

Not unreasonable at all. I have no insight into how they can justify it but wondered if you've seen this thread which is about sentencing in hit and run cases?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3174763-aibu-to-think-that-61-days-in-prison-for-killing-someone-is-an-insult

There's a link to a petition in the thread which I feel is worth signing.

endofthelinefinally · 27/04/2018 17:44

There is a petition on another thread about lenient sentences for drivers who kill other people with their cars.
It was moving very, very slowly.
I dont know if I can find it, but will try.

endofthelinefinally · 27/04/2018 17:45

Ah. Cross posted.
I wish more people would sign.

guiltynetter · 27/04/2018 17:46

this is disgusting :(

endofthelinefinally · 27/04/2018 17:46

He should get life IMO.

HollowTalk · 27/04/2018 17:46

Nine years for two deaths. Absolutely appalling.

lalalaloopy · 27/04/2018 17:46

Absolutely disgusting. Imagine the devastation of losing 2 children & then seeing the criminals get such a pathetic sentence. We are far too lenient with this type of crime, I signed that petition before, let’s hope something changes.

shakeyourcaboose · 27/04/2018 17:47

9 years? I only wish l could sign the petition again

endofthelinefinally · 27/04/2018 17:48

I have lost one child. I cannot imagine what the parents of those boys are going through. It is only my remaining children that makes me keep on putting one foot in front of the other.
I have no words.

ANameforToday · 27/04/2018 17:48

Me too endofthelinefinally, I can't understand why people aren't. I've tried sharing on Facebook and bumping another thread about it. It's a shame.

ANameforToday · 27/04/2018 17:49

In case people don't want to go to the other thread the petition is here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

And some more detail about the case and the campaign from Andy's dad here: eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

CakeOfThePan · 27/04/2018 17:50

I agree it’s disgusting.
If it’s like the London one I’d imagine the difficulty is the charges. In which case the sentances should be allowed to be higher.
They can’t prosecute on murder so they have to bring lesser charges so in turn lower sentences.

Jamiefraserskilt · 27/04/2018 17:51

He chose to take drugs. He chose to get into a car and drive. Those kids didn't choose to die.
This should be two counts of manslaughter, death by reckless driving, driving under the influence, and leaving the scene. All added together and not run concurrently. Should be life.

BarbarianMum · 27/04/2018 17:52

Thank you for starting this thread, I was about to do likewise.

YANBU 9 years is nothing! This wasnt a momentary lapse of concentration in a usually safd driver. This piece of garbage had nothing but contempt both for the legal system and for the lives of those around him.

9 years is a travesty. Angry

NoWordForFluffy · 27/04/2018 17:53

That is absolutely disgusting.

I understand sentencing guidelines, but there needs to be a change to these where death by dangerous driving carries a WAY heavier maximum sentence, including life (I'm very surprised it doesn't already, actually).

The devastation of those poor, poor parents is unthinkable.

ApocalypseNowt · 27/04/2018 17:53

It depends what the charge was tbh. Judges have to follow guidelines re max sentences, discounts, etc.

As PP's have said the best thing you could do is sign the petition.

ApocalypseNowt · 27/04/2018 17:54

CPS ultimately decide what charges are brought.

BarbarianMum · 27/04/2018 17:54

Thinking about it, I thought the maximum possible sentance for this offence is 10 years. He may not even have got that.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/04/2018 17:57

What would he have needed to do to get the maximum 14 years? I think the fact he wasn't given the maximum sentence is as shocking as the fact the maximum sentence is so low to be honest.

ChocolateDoll · 27/04/2018 18:45

Will definitely sign that petition. Thank you for the link.

Struggling to believe what mitigating factors could possibly have led to him not getting the maximum sentence in this case.

Is there anywhere that we can read the judges summing up statement?

OP posts:
DunkandEgg · 27/04/2018 18:48

This is awful and the sentence is an insult.

theanonymum1 · 27/04/2018 18:49

I contributed to the other thread but forgot to sign the petition, so have done so and shared now.

Ruffian · 27/04/2018 19:04

A life sentence would definitely have been right in this awful case.

I think anyone can apply to the Attorney General to review a case where they think the sentence is unduly lenient?
