To think that if I buy paint which says "for walls and ceilings" that it should good for more than 2 days? And to ask you to help me find an alternative dark blue (not navy) matt paint?

So the story is i bought b&q nirvana matt paint for ds's room. Painted the walls a week ago, moved his bed back against the wall on Monday - the paint lookes wrecked. It looms like a cat has been using it as a crscratching post. This is not just the wall by the bed - it is pretty much all over. If you put a finger on it it marks.

I have gone back to b&q in-store- their response "as you've opened the tin there is nothing we can do. Have you tried this (3 times the price paint in a very different colour!)?"
I have gone messaged though their Facebook- they can't do anything it needs to be the store. I asked for their complaints procedure they said through store - or gave me a postal address for head office no e mail or phone available.

Accepting that at least for ow I am going to have to buy alternative paint can anyone recommend a blue paint which is dark but not navy (- I guess a kind of Tesco logo blue)? Needs to be Matt as the shiny stuff just looks awful in this room. I've got a tester for dulux sapphire in Matt- it's too dark and it's shiny!

(Have name changed for this as I have posted on their Facebook site so don't want to use my usual username here)

Hmm, not good! Did you see the reviews on their site? People giving one star, and saying it needed four coats!

Yes, I agree the sapphire Matt is shiny for some reason (DS has it!)

Wickes have a decent range of colours, maybe they'd have a similar shade? Their tester pots are reasonably priced too.

Homebase also have Helmsley paints which have a dark blue- yenston?

The Dulux sapphire took one coat, btw, and it is truly dark.

DevilsDoorbell · 27/04/2018 11:20

Bretton Blue. I think by Dulux is nice, friend has it I her bedroom

TheHumanMothboy · 27/04/2018 11:24

Yenston Tide it's called.
There's also a Craig and rose paint called smalt.
Dulux have a blue slate too.

teenagerparent · 27/04/2018 11:29

B&Q phone number 0333 014 3098 or there is a contact form on their website.
I'll still be going for my money back too! Hope you get it sorted

Wilko do some really hardwearing paint in a massive range of colours.

My entire house was originally painted in Valspar and it looked tatty really quickly. Repainted with Wilko durable and it's still looking good a year on.

CatsMother66 · 27/04/2018 11:30

My Painter told me that dark Matt paint would show up any marks much more than light paint. I used dulux and yes it marks very easily. I’m not sure there is a paint that won’t mark so maybe going lighter is the only option x

BadPaintDay · 27/04/2018 11:32

Unfortunately didn't see the review until I'd painted 2 coats (!).
Might try a bigger Wickes - looked yesterday but range is tiny - buy tiny store.
Sapphire is too dark - and can't do that shine it looks awful - have a tester on the wall of that now.

Bretton is too dark I think - too navy if that makes sense?

www.wilko.com/wall-paint/wilko-statement-matt-emulsion-paint-after-hours-125l/invt/0334373

This looks similar to your original colour.

BadPaintDay · 27/04/2018 11:37

My boy wants a 'night sky - space room's the nirvana does look good in terms of colour and it is Matt- but the wear on it is shocking!

Wilkos- I haven't used their paint before other than basic white... will have a look thanks.
I looked at the small from Craig and rose - but I can't justify £40 a tin especially as will likely need 2!

MrsCharlesBrandon yes it does or even the midnight hour... Anyone used these are the actually Matt?

We’ve used Dulux Sapphire Salute for a mural on DC’s wall. Went on really well.

You can get Johnstone’s Decorating Centres to mix colour matched paint at a fraction of the cost of premium brands. They mixed our Farrow and Ball colours and they were identical, so don’t be put off by expensive tins of paint.

SaucyJane · 27/04/2018 12:04

Dulux will match anything I think?

I love farrow and ball "drawing room blue", that's really pretty deep blue.

bakingdemon · 27/04/2018 12:12

We used all Dulux when we redid our house and are really happy with it. They have a huge range of colours.

Pythone · 27/04/2018 12:33

Little Greene's Deep Space Blue! It's beautiful. I got a sample of it but found it a bit too bright for what I wanted, but it's a lovely deep royal blue.

PattiStanger · 27/04/2018 12:39

Having tried cheap own brand paints I think they are a false economy, for reasonable price I don't think you can beat Dulux

SilverDragonfly1 · 27/04/2018 12:45

I've always found wilko paints to be as good as Dulux etc. They are my first preference every time.

BadPaintDay · 27/04/2018 17:04

Ok, went to wilkos- got after hours - too dark, and midnight hours - quite a strange almost dark powder blue - but too light!

Think I am going to have to go with a mix - valspar or Dulux mix? Which have you used? Looking for a durable Matt paint.

Get a farrow and ball paint chart and get b&q to paint match to the correct colour in that.

cloudtree · 27/04/2018 17:18

dark blue paint always marks really easily unless you have multiple coats. Its because the minute you scratch against it the plaster/paint beneath will show very clearly. Both of my DSs have navy walls and I spend a lot of time touching up.

BigGapMum · 27/04/2018 17:20

Go to a trade paint store. They will colour match and make up paint in the exact colour of your choice. The paint is better quality and cheaper than the paint you get in DIY stores. We do this every time.

PattiStanger · 27/04/2018 17:28

Don't get Valspar until you've read about problems with it. I know they say the formulation's changed but I wouldn't buy it.

I'm really surprised that a PP found Wilko to be as good as Dulux, not when I've had it although that was a few years ago so maybe it's improved, I didn't find it to cover nearly as well.

susiegrapevine · 27/04/2018 17:29

Unfortunately paint is one of those things that you actually have to spend the money on. Dulux do a range of hard wearing range called easy care (used to be called endurance) we bought some for the kids room four years ago and its still holding up pretty well.

WhyDoesItAlways · 27/04/2018 17:51

I'm not sure when valspar changed their paint but I've been using it since about 2015 and think it's brilliant. Goes on really nicely and is very hard wearing. I'm often wiping sudocrem and other marks of DS dark blue bedroom wall with baby wipes and the paint doesn't even rub off. They have a great range of colours too.

PaddedRoomForOnePlease · 27/04/2018 19:21

I'm on a budget so buy cheap paint the do a top coat of Polyvine Decorators Varnish. It's amazing stuff. Repaint using your existing paint and put a coat or two of this on and it'll be grand. I use the satin one. Its washable too.
