My 2 ds2 & ds4 hate the stuff, currently giving forcing 10ml each per day down them. They’re good with other medicines but it seems they think this stuff is is poison! Is there a better tasting, easier to administer alternative? (HV says this is the best as it has the highest VitD) It’s also £4 a bottle and with the two of them having it a bottle is gone in a week. Obviously it’s for their health so I’m happy to suck up the cost if necessary but I feel so bad when it’s medicine time Sad

My 2 year old has a daily dose of wellbaby, and loves it!

DrWhy · 25/04/2018 20:50

I don’t know if you can get them down south but in Scotland you get a bottle of healthy start vitamins when your baby is a few months old. DS loves them, you can then buy them in a pharmacy but they have short dates so they are rarely kept in stock, you have to order them, they are about £1.50 a bottle.

Atthebottomofthesea · 25/04/2018 20:54

We had Abidec prescribed for ds (autism, very restricted diet) It went down like a lead balloon, but then I can't even get calpol in him so it was no surprise.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2018 20:55

Don't get it on white clothing. I got it on my student nurse tunic and it never came off!! Are you sure 10ml is the correct dose. I don't think I've ever given more than 2ml. The bottles are tiny.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2018 20:56

I just looked in the BNFC cans couldn't find it.

EggysMom · 25/04/2018 21:01

Our 8yo son's Paed suggested we try and get vitamins into him due to his restrictive diet (autism). I laughed and asked her how - he won't swallow pills and won't eat the gummies, he doesn't like sweets and just spits them out. She agreed that there isn't a decent tasting liquid variety. So we now buy pills and crush them into his weetabix each morning.

Nhs/Dept of Health say: ‘the Department of Health recommends that all children aged up to 5 years are given vitamin supplements containing vitamins A, C and D every day.
It's also recommended that babies who are being breastfed are given a daily vitamin D supplement from birth, whether or not you're taking a supplement containing vitamin D yourself.
Babies who are having more than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day shouldn't be given vitamin supplements. This is because formula is fortified with vitamin D and other nutrients.’

However I wasn’t told this until Ds was 14 months and we happened to change HV districts!

Laiste · 25/04/2018 21:03

I give the hariborange gummy vits too. DD4(4) won't eat egg, cheese, cereal, fish or normal milk. sigh.

(she's growing like a bean pole with the energy of a wild thing so something's working well!)

pastabest · 25/04/2018 21:10

Another vote for boots own brand liquid, DD actually asks for it in the bath every night. She gets it in the bath as it's the colour of yellow highlighter pens and stains everything it touches.

DappledThings · 25/04/2018 21:11

Toddlerteaplease Definitely 10 ml, I just took a picture of the label but Chrome is playing up on my phone and won't let me add it

Mammyofasuperbaby · 25/04/2018 21:11

My son gets excited when we give him his well baby. He was on abidec from birth but he hates it so we changed asap. I tried it once and it is vile, I felt extra sorry for my son having to take it.

Mooter · 19/02/2019 16:29

I bought Abidec but LO tried it once, pulled a face and wouldn't have it again! I ended up going for one called Nature and Nurture. I haven't seen it for sale anywhere except Amazon but my DD loves it - literally can't get enough. It's a bit dearer than some others but lasts about 8 weeks which the others don't...

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2019 17:32

Yes and it stinks. I got it on my white tunic as a student nurse. It never came out.

Camomila · 20/02/2019 17:38

I give DS 2 gummy vitamins... I don't remember who they are by, but I bought them in Asda and they are age 2+ rather than 3 like most vitamins.

user1496701154 · 20/02/2019 17:41

We were told you don't need to give as long as a varied and healthy diet by our HV also of they have over a certain a pint of milk a day they are not needed.

Jackshouse · 20/02/2019 17:43

neddle we live in the NE and it does not matter how much time we spend outside the sun is not strong enough here for us to get enough Vit D.

SinkGirl · 20/02/2019 17:59

Yes, children need vitamin D. Almost half the people in this country have a deficiency, let alone optimal levels. There’s not enough sun, and we are supposed to stay out of it when it is strong enough to produce vitamin D.

SinkGirl · 20/02/2019 18:00

You cannot get vitamin D from foods (although a few have it added now, but not enough). Infant formula contains vitamin D. Breastfed babies need supplementing, as do formula fed children once they stop having as much formula.

DrWhy · 20/02/2019 18:09

Yep, particularly up here in northern Scotland you need at the very least a vitamin D supplement. I know a baby who’s parents weren’t told this and has actually developed rickets, he’s now being treated with high dose vitamin D. The NHS ones are definitely the best tasting drops I can get locally. Oh and we get HV visits up to age 5 for the person questioning why a 2 and 4 year old would still see their HV.

CheerfulMuddler · 20/02/2019 18:57

It's also beginning to be suspected that vitamin D deficiency in children and pregnant mothers is linked to autism (although I don't think there's been enough research to prove it yet, it's looking very strongly as though there's a link.) Where we are, the health visitors were VERY strong on vitamin D in pregnancy, and we all got vitamin D drops in the Bounty bag too.

SinkGirl · 20/02/2019 20:35

Agreed - I found out after my twins were born that I had severe vitamin D deficiency. Both my twins have ASD. I’ve been giving them a high dose supplement for nearly two months - may be a coincidence but we’ve seen huge changes in that time.

Kaykay06 · 20/02/2019 20:45

I’ve never given mine supplements, but do give certain kids them on my ward at work, Abidec honks, haven’t spilled them on myself but dropped a full bottle in the drug trolly as a student
It stank for weeks - oops.
10ml of revolting medicine seems extreme every day, try gummies or similar they’ll be cheaper and more appealing I’m sure

WrongKindOfFace · 20/02/2019 20:53

I haven’t tried the children’s version of this, but I do use the adult version which is fine. It’s mint flavoured. betteryou.com/dluxjunior?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoO21p5jL4AIVgQvTCh0wVgvmEAQYAiABEgLJe_D_BwE

They also do an infant version, but not sure of the flavour.

Raspberry88 · 20/02/2019 21:02

DS didn't like the abidec either but he seems happy with the wellbaby. I mix it in his yoghurt and he doesn't complain so...! I was wondering about the gummy ones the other day...is the 3 yrs up recommendation for choking reasons? Sounds like other people have given them earlier than 3.

user1471426142 · 20/02/2019 21:04

Someone in the supermarket told me abidec was the nicest one so I got those after struggling with wellbaby (which really is vile). She lied! My toddler just looked at me with utter disgust. I get the fortified petit filous now which isn’t ideal but better than nothing.
