Showing Ankles at school

ArntNise · 24/04/2018 18:11

I have received a text from my daughter's secondary school...

"It has come to my attention a considerable amount of female students are showing bare ankles. Please can I remind you that school uniform policy is long black tailored trousers, include pockets and fly, covering the ankles. Black socks to cover the ankles should also be worn. Skirts should be knee length with black tights. Thank you for your support."

I have read this and laughed. AIBU to laugh? How do I respond to the school?

PS I have name changed as part of my username was my name.

Well it's a bit odd but if the uniform says trousers need to cover ankles then they need to cover ankles I guess.

Have they had a spate of pedal pushers in the warm weather?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 24/04/2018 18:14

You don’t respond. You just make sure your child adheres to the uniform policy you agreed to.

ALongHardWinter · 24/04/2018 18:14

Crikey! Sounds like they're stuck in Victorian times!

wineandcheeseplease · 24/04/2018 18:15

I'd respond by making sure my child followed the uniform rules

blackteasplease · 24/04/2018 18:16

It's the uniform. Soynds a reasonable one!

mumtomaxwell · 24/04/2018 18:16

We have this policy because female students were wearing tight cropped leggings/jeggings. Looks bloody awful with a blazer!

BertrandRussell · 24/04/2018 18:16

Rolled up trousers are fashionable at the moment. This is just saying no rolled up trousers or pedal pushers.

ArntNise · 24/04/2018 18:16

@Zibb policy does not mention covering ankles.. just long black trousers.

itsbetterthanabox · 24/04/2018 18:16

That's hilarious.
What if a child grows quickly!
Are they not worried about male ankles?

Phosphorus · 24/04/2018 18:17

It doesn't sound unreasonable, as uniform policies go.

SoaveSally · 24/04/2018 18:17

God lord, have we been transported back to the 1900's Confused

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 24/04/2018 18:18

So the school is lying in the text?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 24/04/2018 18:19

What if a child grows quickly!

Wear socks?

Allthewaves · 24/04/2018 18:20

Are loads of girls wearing 3/4 length trousers or skirts with no socks or tights?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 24/04/2018 18:21

Ankles and the ankle bone are very prone to getting knocked or scraping against things. The more layers over them the better in my books.

fontofnoknowledge · 24/04/2018 18:21

The issue here is 'female students'. Are they saying it's perfectly ok for Male ankles to be on show... or is this to do with Females trying to get away with turning uniform into a fashion item like pedal pushers.

If former then they need to be called out on it.
If latter, and your daughter is doing this, you need to have a word with her and make sure she adheres to uniform policy.

MixedHerbs · 24/04/2018 18:23

In the morning, Our school bus stop looks like a hundred pairs of trousers have had arguments with their respective ankles. THe girls all turn up their trousers twice to expose the - shock horror - inch of flesh around their ankles. They don't half look silly en masse.
But our Principal is too sensible and long in the tooth to say much about it, just as she rarely intervenes in the too-tight trousers debate (as long as there's a distinct waistband, zip and button). Next term it will be 'can we get away with DMs' again.
I should say the colour of the bottom half and the wearing of shirt jumper and blazer ALL with the logo is NOT negotiable. Students don't flout this, perhaps because the staff don't make an issue of an inch of lower leg.

itsbetterthanabox · 24/04/2018 18:23

@ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo
Not all shoes need socks especially in the summer

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2018 18:24

I would imagine it says 'female students' because boys tend to wear full length trousers with black socks anyway.
My two DSs have grown quickly out of trousers but their ankles have never been visible Confused

ArntNise · 24/04/2018 18:24

Yes, my thoughts were Victorian too 😂

Waiting for my daughter to get home to ask if it has been mentioned in assembly.

And to answer... my daughter's trousers do cover her ankles when standing but they ride up when she sits down. Oh and I have just sat down and crossed my legs and my ankles are showing.

I do understand if other pupils are wearing leggings or pedal pushers; I hadn't thought of that I had just focused on the ankles...

The text says that female students are showing bare ankles. Presumably that means the male students aren’t. Otherwise it would say students. If the males are doing it they would be included in the text reminder of uniform policy.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 24/04/2018 18:26

At school? What shoes are they wearing at school that don’t need socks?

TroubledLichen · 24/04/2018 18:26

It’s obviously to stop leggings/treggings/cropped trousers etc. but it does pretty funny and rather Victorian! Don’t see why you’d want to respond to the message though Confused

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2018 18:26

Yes i think the warm weather has brought out some dubious 'school' trousers for female students. See how far they can push the rules. Not far as it goes...

Lulahsmumma · 24/04/2018 18:30

Not at all, my son was excluded from school for 3 days for not wearing the correct trousers. The same style he had been wearing all school year! It's ridiculous what these schools expect.
