Showing Ankles at school

ArntNise · 24/04/2018 18:11

I have received a text from my daughter's secondary school...

"It has come to my attention a considerable amount of female students are showing bare ankles. Please can I remind you that school uniform policy is long black tailored trousers, include pockets and fly, covering the ankles. Black socks to cover the ankles should also be worn. Skirts should be knee length with black tights. Thank you for your support."

I have read this and laughed. AIBU to laugh? How do I respond to the school?

PS I have name changed as part of my username was my name.

I think they've had to specify 'covers ankles' because black trousers could cover everything from pedal pushers and some girls have clearly been taking liberties with the dress code.

Backtoblack1 · 24/04/2018 19:15

Seems a bit archaic but we do have lots of our girls wearing leggings which are not appropriate IMO.

Mycatsarebetterthanyours · 24/04/2018 19:17

I don't read that as them having an issues with ankles or showing body parts but more as students looking to bend or push the rules with cropped trousers or rolled up trousers etc.

We weren't allowed to wear trousers at school (I'm in my 30s) and with the skirts we either had to wear tights, short socks above the ankle or one high socks not over the knee. So basically similar rules applied.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/04/2018 19:17

Has there been a spate of older girls with loose morals showing their ankles again? Off to the workhouse with them.

MirandaWest · 24/04/2018 19:18

DS wears trainer socks - I am sure his ankles get seen at least some of the time. They are meant to wear official trousers (which he does) but ankles can happen

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2018 19:19

Why would you wear trainer socks with school shoes?

Summertime45 · 24/04/2018 19:19

I agree with the school; there are lots of girls who wear tiny trainers socks; they should wear proper socks or tights

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 24/04/2018 19:21

CAn you actually imagine being a teacher these days? You work hard at school, you go to university and get a degree. You do a very demanding PGCE, pass all your exams on pedagogy and learning and so on..

You then spend your time at work pulling up girls for wearing the wrong socks.

it must be soul destroying.

AskBasil · 24/04/2018 19:22

I think you urgently need to check if the school have covered the piano and table legs, just in case they've neglected that pressing duty.

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2018 19:24

I think schools either have a uniform policy or they don't. If they do they need to enforce it because pupils and indeed parents take the piss otherwise.

Hence all the sad face pictures in the papers.

Didn't you know ankles were an aphrodisiac lol on a serious note that's batshit lol

MaisyPops · 24/04/2018 19:34

Isn't this 'some students are wearing 7/8 fashion trousers, others are rolling them up etc because that's.the trend'

Expecting students to follow a uniform (black full length non fashion trousers, plain black school skirt) and then students
wearing leggings, cropped, 7/8, jeans, super skinny trousers, fashion skirts, tiny jersey skirts, rolled up so pants are on show isn't Victorian. It's expecting people to follow.school

I couldn't care less about ankles being on show. I do care about school rules being followed properly which means not wearing uniform as a fashion statement.

BlackForestCake · 24/04/2018 19:36

Dear school,
A considerable NUMBER of female students ...

Mistigri · 24/04/2018 19:55

Regardless of who is wearing their trousers a little short, the letter should have been addressed to students of both sexes.

It would be a terrible shame if a boy accidentally exposed a bit of ankle, thereby destroying his chances of a good education and - worse! - his school's reputation.

LimeIce · 24/04/2018 19:57

At dc's school the girls have to wear a specific style of skirt or trousers, whereas the boys just have to wear grey school trousers. I assume this is because in the past the girls have worn things like leggings or a lycra mini skirt (which looks a bit rubbish as part of uniform) so they've found it easier to specify the style. I don't mind as it's easier not to have to follow fashion with uniform

Jengnr · 24/04/2018 20:06

They have to wear tights under skirts? When it’s warm? Why?!?!?

MaisyPops · 24/04/2018 20:27

Mistigri
My guess would be that the boys aren't wearing cropped, 7/8 or rolled trousers as a fashion statement.

It's not about the flash of ankle. It's a group of students not following rules.

Mistigri · 24/04/2018 21:03

I would be astonished if it were only girls doing this.

And even if it were, it would be far better from a presentational point of view to direct the message to all students. I presume this teacher didn't intend to make himself look like a nutter with attitudes are straight out of the 19th century.

BertrandRussell · 24/04/2018 21:05

“My guess would be that the boys aren't wearing cropped, 7/8 or rolled trousers as a fashion statement.”

They are at Ds’s school Grin There is currently a debate about how short a 6th former’s trousers have to be to be considered shorts- which are not allowed.

mostlymindblown · 24/04/2018 21:13

I thought part of the fun of secondary school was to see how far you could push the uniform rules?
I remember a particularly strong outfit of floor-length tiered black skirt over 8 hole dm boots teamed with a knee length jumper with artfully positioned holes Robert Smith had a lot to answer for

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2018 21:18

DS1 had to wear a suit for 6th form at his school and there were lots of rules, next year DS2 will be in 6th Form at a school that has no uniform after Year 11, it will be a revelation.

15 years of school uniform between 2 children is plenty, I will never need to darken the doorstep of that uniform shop ever again. Yay. Grin

I think it is quite reasonable and hygenic to wear socks with shoes.
If they are long enough to cover the ankle the shoe will not rub on the back of the foot.
Your job is to support the schools quite reasonable rules, they have enough problems to deal with without problem parents adding to the mix.
