To get annoyed when people say they have no money

.....while living it up and spending money on expensive luxuries.

I have a friend who is only 24, earns £26k and always moans about having no money, yet boasts about only having to spend £450 a month on rent and bills. She goes out to nice restaurants every week, goes on plush holidays and has a gym, yoga and multiple other memberships.

How is this ‘having no money?’

I may sound jealous, but honestly I just can’t stand people who plead poverty when I’ve seen people really struggling.

Juells nope, she really was that oblivious - small forum, had met people in RL etc. Just one of those people who cannot comprehend how other people live.

That should be PP

Bastardingcough · 24/04/2018 08:39

You can't take it with you when you go, so spend it.

GrandTheftWalrus · 24/04/2018 09:37

Also being skint is when i have to scrape together coppers to get 5p reduced bread so we can eat for a couple of days

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 24/04/2018 10:26

YANBU OP it is irritating. And salary is relative - I only got past £26k at the age of 35 and have three kids and a house. It was enough for us but the salary I’m on now is better!

It’s just annoying when you’re talking about your expensive haircut or whatever and the other person is moaning they can’t afford that so cut their own hair - and then moves onto talking about their Caribbean holiday or whatever. It’s irritating when they don’t acknowledge it’s not due to lack of money, it’s due to different responsibilities or priorities. And that’s fine! Just don’t tell me you’re skint when you mean I spent my money on other things!

(Can you tell there’s one person in particular who does this ALL THE TIME??! Grin)

If you spend all your money on unnecessary stuff you shouldn't then moan about not having any but people do...It's immature and silly. I would just ignore it.

specialsubject · 24/04/2018 11:03

not 'no money' but by the sounds of it no interests and no conversation. Is this boring person worth your time?

TalkFastThinkSlow · 24/04/2018 11:06

I agree with you OP.

I earn 29k, and if I didn't have childcare, I'd be laughing. I'd have £1k to spend on anything I want per month. 26k is 1600 a month so you could only be skint with really high outgoings!

Also, I remember what it's like to be really broke, thankfully a long time ago. Walking an hour to and from work cos I couldn't afford the bus, having a packet of crisps for lunch cos I couldn't even afford a fucking meal deal. That's skint. Anyone earning 26k, with no kids, only paying 450 in rent and bills, saying they're skint can stfu.

Rant over.

"Not having money" is a temporary situation. It means other priorities have taken precedence (whether that's rent/food or luxury holidays).

InspMorse · 24/04/2018 11:09

As others have said, she has no money because she has spent it all on crap!

TotHappy · 24/04/2018 11:36

To those saying they never, ever touch their savings - what are they for then??

To me, savings are for anything outside of the normal budget. We spent most of ours on a new boiler last year so now I have about £450 in easy access savings - this will be for spending money when we go on holiday in summer, plus hopefully enough for the mot when it falls due. I do also try to keep a bit in longer term savings as well but atm this is only £100. As it builds up, it'll be there if we need home improvements, or a new car or something.

pigmcpigface · 24/04/2018 12:04

We divide savings between 'spendy savings' and 'non-spendy savings'. Spendy savings go on stuff we can't afford to buy out of monthly income and don't want to get into debt for - like a new car, or work on our house. Non-spendy savings are for retirement and real emergencies. We went through a month a couple of years back when everything broke - boiler, cooker, washer, dishwasher, laptop, phone, and a car accident. (They weren't even of a similar age, it was just a real run of bad luck). We needed to dip into savings to get ourselves straight.
