Jogging with a pushchair?

MsHopey · 23/04/2018 07:11

I've been on a fitness kick since Christmas. The eating part is going great, the exercise part, not so much. Me, DH and our 9 month old son live in a very small flat. There's no room to do any exercise, but he now gotten even harder as little one is crawling and standing up, he cries when I put him in a chair or something, he wants to be playing and crawling all day. Basically it leaves no room for me to be jumping vigorously around the living room for an hour a day.
I was thinking of taking up Jogging, but DS would have to accompany me in his pushchair. There's no local parks.
Essentially, how ridiculous would I look jogging round the streets with a push chair? I've always thought it looked a bit silly and like your permanently late for a bus. But beggars can't be choosers and I'm thinking it might be my best bet for daily activity.

You can get running buggies, which are great. You can still run with a pushchair but they aren't designed for it so are hard work to push.

As to how ridiculous you might look? Meh. Doesn't matter if you are getting fitter.

Ohmydayslove · 23/04/2018 07:15

I think push chair jogging looks daft to be honest but why don’t you just have a fast walk with him. Just as beneficial and easier on the knees

Todayissunny · 23/04/2018 07:16

I did it and always got very positive comments from other people.

ForkIt · 23/04/2018 07:18

I’ve reached an age where I don’t look good really doing any form or exercise, it I still do what I enjoy- I say go for it

Hauskat · 23/04/2018 07:19

Oh God definitely do it! I so admire your energy - its taken me ages to get moving again (other than darting after a fast moving toddler) but I have now and I've missed it so much. I ambitiously bought a cross trainer when my DD was about your child's age but she was staggering about the place and using it was totally impossible (terrifying moving parts) most of the time. Do you have a play pen? I got a massive one that took up the whole living room but it was the only way to nip to the loo or cook meals. RE jogging with the pushchair if you don't want to look late for a bus wear some really obviously sporty looking clothes? And cap so can avoid eye contact? I bet DS will love it.

megletthesecond · 23/04/2018 07:20

You won't look silly.
Do you have a three wheeler buggy? A running buggy is best but often expensive (I've been looking for a second hand one for someone). A three wheeler with tyres also does the job, especially if you aren't a fast or long distance runner yet.

Sirzy · 23/04/2018 07:21

Lots of people do it.

Have a look on a fb group called RunMummyRun and they will be able to give advice on the best way to do it.

RoughPatchMum · 23/04/2018 07:22

Have a look for a local Buggyfit class. It runs 3 times a week near me (different location each day, but all within a 10 min drive). Mix of jogging with pushchair, boxercise, circuits, all sorts so it never got boring.

UrgentScurryfunge · 23/04/2018 07:23

Running with a buggy is a thing. Standard buggies are not designed for it, to do it properly there are large wheeled 3 wheelers with a fixed front wheel and additional features such as on the brakes. Running in flatter areas with wider paths and fewer obsticles helps. There's lots of pram runners on the Run Mummy Run fb groups, and second hand sales of running buggies.

I once got scuppered for my early morning run by my toddler making an unusually early bright-eyed start to the day, so brought him and my usual pram out for an 8 mile run. It was definitely good exercise!

RoughPatchMum · 23/04/2018 07:24

buggyfit.co.uk
Benefit of being social too! The ones near me were held at country parks with cafes so there was always the option for a cuppa afterwards with the instructor and the other mums.

Americantan · 23/04/2018 07:24

A woman I know used to jog pushing a pram with her dog on a bungee lead around her waist - efficient use of time!

MsHopey · 23/04/2018 07:25

I do have a 3 wheeled quinny buzz I was trying to sell. Not getting much interest. But it does seem like it would handle better on a jog than my bravo travel system which is massive and a bit creaky tbh.
Always worth a try. I had seen a few classes in parks but they weren't really local and the times seemed a bit crap.
I'll have a look for some more though. :)

Argh. Lots of bad feedback regarding the quinny buzz and jogging.

Just do it!

I've regularly driven past two men running with buggies for the last few years. Think it looks great.........not that it matiers what I, nor anyone else thinks about it!

Yura · 23/04/2018 08:21

Running with a running buggy is great excercise - just make sure you fet a proper 3 wheeler on which you can lock the front wheel (otherwise the risk of it tipping is too high). if you can't get one of them, try power walking with the buggy - safer and slso a good calorie burner.

cresentmooned · 28/04/2018 21:12

We have an out and about buggy and I use it for park run! Recommend it, you barely need to push it.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 28/04/2018 21:28

Loads of people here jog with buggies and dogs, including in the snow.

They don't look silly. They look like people who want to get/stay fit. I suspect people who think they look silly are just insecure.

Tartsamazeballs · 28/04/2018 21:31

Running with a buggy is fabulous, it's like resistance training! Loads of people doing it in my area, wouldn't look weird at all.

I'd suggest you have a look on second hand sites/facebook for something like an Out n About nipper or similar. You can pick up older ones for not much money at all.

GemmaB78 · 28/04/2018 21:40

We have an out n about nipper as well - it's excellent.

nocake · 28/04/2018 21:40

I run with a buggy, when I can persuade one of my kids to come with me. I have an Out and About Nipper Sport, which is one of the best running buggies available at the moment. But as long as your buggy is stable at speed you should be fine.

InfiniteSheldon · 28/04/2018 21:46

What about the unnecessary strain on the babies head and neck? Babies are not designed to be strapped in a buggy and bounced along at speed

DragonMummy1418 · 28/04/2018 21:51

Honestly I would ignore anyone with an opinion- especially strangers!

There's a couple of women who I often see doing it in my area but they do have running buggies.

Even if it looks daft, I am just inclined to think good on them!

TriJo · 28/04/2018 21:59

I've been running with a buggy since DS1 was 6 months old, he's 2 now and he's going to be my passenger at Parkrun for the 50th time next week. It's the best way I have of getting out for runs midweek, DH works very long hours so it's difficult for me to train around that.

Tartsamazeballs · 28/04/2018 22:00

Infinite

Don't be daft 🙄 if 9 month olds were that fragile the human race would have died out years ago.

lalalaloopy · 28/04/2018 22:02

I’ve also wondered if it’s comfortable for the babies (less concerned for toddlers). Having said that I’ve seen plenty of small children asleep on the bag of bikes getting tossed about. A friend had the Bugaboo jogger one for a bit which I tried but I didn’t like it.
