To have not eaten these prawns?

Currently on holiday in Asia. This evening we went out for dinner at a place that has great TA reviews. I ordered 300g of the garlic prawns, which arrived in the form of four HUGE langoustines. On closer inspection though, two of them turned out to be a distinctly off-putting shade of green around the head, so I didn’t eat them. DH got cross saying it was a waste and an insult to their cooking.

Now I’m a huge seafood fan. I can wolf away a pint of prawns and a seafood platter at Mersea Island seafood shed like they’re running out of them. But I’ve never encountered green prawns before. WIBU to have left them?

I've just googled, and green prawns are raw. YANBU.

notsohippychick · 22/04/2018 16:29

Oh my! There is no way I would have eaten these!!!

I don’t know much about prawns but I’d steer clear if any that weren’t pink!

Puffycat · 22/04/2018 16:29

Bloody hell that looks dreadful!
Prawns are sometimes described as ‘green’ but I’ve never seen a dish look like that!
Overall I think you were absolutely right not to eat it, you’re husband is being totally unreasonable to be arsey about it.
You really don’t want to have a severe dose of gyp in Asia!

PennyDreadfull · 22/04/2018 16:31

I would absolutely not be eating those.

AgentProvocateur · 22/04/2018 16:37

It’s just their brains, or wherever is in the head cavity. Perfectly normal and edible.

frogsoup · 22/04/2018 16:39

Looks delicious to me! Its just their brains, it's called tomalley. Tastiest bit!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2018 16:41

That's just prawn brain. And langoustines look like this

Yours are crevettes, which are cooked king prawns.

To have not eaten these prawns?
AngeloMysterioso · 22/04/2018 16:42

I’ve eaten the brain part plenty of times before, but it’s never been green 🤢

loveka · 22/04/2018 16:42

I would have peeled them and had a look what the body was like. Or asked them?

However, not unreasonable not to eat something you are worried about.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2018 16:42

And my dad and DS always suck the brains out to no ill effect!

frogsoup · 22/04/2018 16:49

It's often greenish esp in bigger prawns. But if you are unsure about seafood it's probably never a bad idea to be cautious. Your DH missed a trick, I'd always strongly encourage any dinner companions to not eat their enormous prawns so that I can scarf them instead.

AngeloMysterioso · 22/04/2018 16:56

Ha! Not a chance! He won’t touch seafood, unless it comes battered with chips.

Grilledaubergines · 22/04/2018 16:58

I can’t believe you didn’t eat them OP! They look delicious. It’s just the brain. You should just removed the head and got stuck in!

safariboot · 22/04/2018 17:01

Read this thread (if you dare) and have no regrets about rejecting your prawns.

And your DH is being a bit rich telling you to eat something he wouldn't eat.

Highhorse1981 · 22/04/2018 17:03

“Insult to their cooking”

Classic patronising ignorance dressed up as being sensitive to other countries.

Say he went to a restaurant in this country and was served up a roast and the chicken looked undercooked. Would your DH still eat the chicken because he was afraid it would hurt the feelings of the cook? No, he wouldn’t.

FrancisUnderwood · 22/04/2018 17:08

Prawns are Satan's little henchmen and the green puss seeping out of the brains of these confirms that fact irrefutably.

YWBU to ever order such hideousness.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/04/2018 17:08

OMG! They look delicious. The green is a thing called the hepatopancreas... like tomalley, a delicacy, but not one I am yet 100% comfortable with. I looked it up years ago, this article explains it

yourveryworstnightmare · 22/04/2018 17:09

It is okay. I have been to Asia many times and have cooked the said prawns. Thats just the colour of the brain. People being so hysterical here cracks me up!

FrancisUnderwood · 22/04/2018 17:10

Also I agree, the whole 'insult to their cooking' is such a trite arguement.

If you were in a restaurant, I don't think the owners would give a shiny shite if you wore their garlic seafood medley as a nice hat as long as you paid.

yourveryworstnightmare · 22/04/2018 17:11

And btw if you buy tiger prawns from Thailand from sainsburys and try to deep fry them at home for a long time, same effect. I personally love that stuff to my DH's disgust.

TattyDevine · 22/04/2018 17:15

Love the shed at Mersey...

BridgeFarmKefir · 22/04/2018 17:18

It's the stuff in the head, perfectly fine. The rest of the prawns were cooked (as were the heads) Shame, bet they were tasty. My Dad scoops out the heads, which is grim, but it's never done him any harm in his 73 years!

AngeloMysterioso · 22/04/2018 17:20

I feel sad that I didn’t eat them now Sad

PlatypusPie · 22/04/2018 19:05

Isn’t it just the brains ? Looks more startling because they are very large. If the heads weren’t there, the body flesh would look fine. I do enjoy a langoustine head !

However, you do need the feel confident about seafood and I’m sure you wouldn’t enjoy it if you feel doubtful.

Skarossinkplunger · 22/04/2018 19:15

I would have peeled them and had a look what the body was like. Or asked them?

I’m not sure they were in a fit state to answer, what will the whole being sautéed in garlic thing. Smile
