AIBU to hate 1930s semi's?

I was just hoping for someone to talk me around to 1930's semis...! I don't know what it is but I just find them, for the main part, so ugly! I generally dislike the look, the windows, pebble dash.

We live in an area for mainly 4 story Georgian houses, most turned into flats, we love the area but can't afford to stay here (1-3 million for a house) we have sold our 2 bedroom flat for 600,000 and are struggling to find a house a little further out from here because I hate the 1930s houses and there's a lot of them! (If you want parking, garden and good schools) DH is starting to get annoyed with me! It's not a snobbery thing, I just don't like the look of them and have fallen in love with Georgian and Victorian houses. I also hate new builds!

Can someone gives me all the great things about living in a post war house? I love that they have bigger gardens and love a lot of the original features, I'm just getting sad about looking out my windows and seeing houses I don't like the look of! First world problems I know!Smile

Hate 'em - the Big Mac and fries of housebuilding.

yomellamoHelly · 22/04/2018 17:01

We have a 1930s semi. We bought it because it had a big garden and two reception rooms and potential to turn the garage into a ground floor bathroom. The house feels big.
However it has taken alot of knocking about (ongoing) to turn it into a modern family home. Think that's it's biggest downside.
Being 1930s it's also a very plain house. There are very few "original features". Main one would have been the t&g mahogany floorboards, but they've been much abused over the years and are best hidden.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2018 17:21

I'm house hunting at the moment and am quite drawn to this one. It obviously needs updating but has good bones and a big garden which I'm struggling to find with any of the older houses we've looked at.

It might not be the most attractive house from the outside but I imagine it will be a lovely house to live in.

Never lived in a 30s semi, but have lived in everything from an individually built new eco-house, to a 1500's farmhouse with Georgian extension. All had their pros and cons!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 22/04/2018 17:23

DP and I used to live in a flat in a converted Victorian terrace.

It was so cold and draughty and damp I used to sleep in all my clothes.

We now live in a 1930s semi and I love it. The rooms are much smaller, it's cosy, we have a nice garden.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2018 17:26

Hmm, link doesn't seem to be working trying again.

PickAChew · 22/04/2018 19:00

That's beautiful, hairyhands.

The big windows and light, even in the north facing rooms, is one of the things that attracted us to this place.

Of course, the one issue with the big, wide, windows is that it's amazing which high street shops simply don't sell 229cm wide ready made curtains! Thankfully Dunelm do and their made to measure aren't extortionate so they're getting a fair bit of custom, plus we've found a great independent curtain store, not too far away.

We've yet to decide what to do with our bay window. It's 5 sided and has half knackered, terminally dusty wooden blinds. Curtains are never going to work and the one, pathetic, single radiator in the room is in it, anyhow. It has tilt and turn windows, so I'm not sure that plantation shutters would work. Some of our neighbours just curtain off the whole bay. Some have vertical blinds, which always make me think of an office. One has those clever double layer blinds.

PickAChew · 22/04/2018 19:04

And a curtain, too, it seems

I live in a 1930's semi. I love it ! No pebble dash either! If I knew how to post a pic I would. thick?moi?

Thequeenisdeadboys · 22/04/2018 19:12

Love that one for sale !

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 19:55

I like this one (hoping link will work)

wowfudge · 22/04/2018 21:35

That needs a lot of work! The chimney breast removal on the ground floor looks really dodgy too although the fact that some of it remains should mean it could be reinstated fairly easily.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 21:47

I know...I could never afford to do what needs doing to it (also I am clueless and hadn't noticed the chimney breast).

But someone is going to modernise it! Probably horribly! Sad

DameDoom · 22/04/2018 21:50

I agree Tawdry. Love it. The patterned carpet is hideous but clearly high quality.

Belindabauer · 22/04/2018 21:57

What an ugly extension on the house next door.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2018 22:07

My brotjer wnet to view this house the other week, a bit earlier, but largely untouched. I just know some fucker's going to butcher it. Breaks my heart.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 22:18

Wow, you get a fine big house for £400k in Leeds!

Bettyfood · 22/04/2018 22:28

1930s houses were not "thrown up" in the same way as post WW2 housing or indeed, Victorian terraces, and new build houses now are mostly terrible quality and vastly overpriced.

Alright1613 · 22/04/2018 22:29

I think they can be really lovely when close to how they would have been in the 1930s. Thinking red brick, cream paint and some green or burgundy wood work with a beautiful porch.

I do think they look naff when they get rendered totally white with grey windows and doors.

We live not too far from Hampton (Tw) and there are some absolutely beautiful 1930s houses around.

We moved from an Edwardian terrace to a 1930s house. It’s been stripped of everything beautiful but when money allows I’d love to make it look like it used to.

I love Georgian houses 😍
I like 1930s house thought. You can get rid of the pebble dash etc but I find the character really charming.
I grew up in a 1930s semi and loved it. I've since moved in to a 1960s house which is big, the space is nice, but there's no character and I find it hard to decorate and like it.
Keep looking OP, I'm sure you'll find something :)

boymum9 · 23/04/2018 09:13

Alright, your house is gorgeous, definitely looking at the wrong ones! There doesn't seem to be any with that look really around my way!

I lost track of the feed and am looking forward to reading through it, definitely coming around to the idea re space, driveway and garden!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 23/04/2018 09:25

We used to live in a 1930's ish semi in London - it was not pebble dashed, but red brick and had a nice feature roof/facade (can't explain it!) compared to the other ones on the street, so they are not all the same. I loved the big bay windows too and the stained glass details. The side access/drive was much more practical than all the Victorian houses around. We did a big loft conversion too and actually did away with the tiny third bedroom to make an even larger landing. It also had a much larger, wider garden than all the Victorian ones in our budget too!

boymum9 · 23/04/2018 09:25

Somethingnasty, that's the issue, we keep going to see Victorian terraces and I love them inside because of the windows, cornicing etc and most tend to have kept their original features, but DH although loves that too is a no go because no parking, narrow streets, small gardens, I know deep down they wouldn't work for us practically! We could move out of the city a bit more and have a lovely country house with a bit more space but we're not ready to move out! So a 1930s semi is really the only option! Do you really feel a bit sad when you look at the other houses around you? I'm worried about driving home and not liking it, I know it's a ridiculous problem but it's still a lot of money to spend and I want to live somewhere I love!

My friends mum has an extension on hers a bit like this one! Looks beautiful, if you wanted to mordernise it a bit you could. I know you said you like the Victorian look but you could incorporate

Annasgirl · 23/04/2018 09:50

I always wanted to live in a Georgian or Victorian. We now live in a 1930's semi and I can honestly say it is the most beautiful house ever. All the charm of the Victorian and Georgian but with light in every room due to amazing bay windows and the fab gardens front and back.

I would never even look at a Victorian now and as for Georgian - the draughts and all the levels would be a pain. My friend lived in a Georgian house with 5 levels when pregnant with DC4 and said it was really difficult for family living. If I can come around to 1030's semis anyone can. View more of them.
