AIBU to hate 1930s semi's?

I was just hoping for someone to talk me around to 1930's semis...! I don't know what it is but I just find them, for the main part, so ugly! I generally dislike the look, the windows, pebble dash.

We live in an area for mainly 4 story Georgian houses, most turned into flats, we love the area but can't afford to stay here (1-3 million for a house) we have sold our 2 bedroom flat for 600,000 and are struggling to find a house a little further out from here because I hate the 1930s houses and there's a lot of them! (If you want parking, garden and good schools) DH is starting to get annoyed with me! It's not a snobbery thing, I just don't like the look of them and have fallen in love with Georgian and Victorian houses. I also hate new builds!

Can someone gives me all the great things about living in a post war house? I love that they have bigger gardens and love a lot of the original features, I'm just getting sad about looking out my windows and seeing houses I don't like the look of! First world problems I know!Smile

I used to not like 1930s houses until I bought one! We've lived here 14 years now and we've added an extension and a loft and I love the light airy feel to it.

We are looking to move now but and all the victorian type houses seem really long and thin with long narrow kitchens at the back and quite dark and dingy.

I really think it depends on house though.

Mammyloveswine · 22/04/2018 14:42

I live in a 1950s semi... its crap in comparison to a 1930s but a lot more space than the new build we looked at!

I love a Victorian terrace and am trying to persuade dh that we need one! There are beautiful ones close to the gorgeous park and gardens we go to often so the lack of a garden wouldn't matter!

What do you want from a house?

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 14:43

Ah, I love a 1930s semi...just like my grandad's house. Every time I see a perfectly preserved example on Zoopla I desperately want to buy it.

They kick the asses of those Georgian houses for liveability too. Living rooms on the ground floor, driveway (and often garage) for your car, good size back yard, often an outside loo for emergencies, good loft space if you want to go up, usually nice bay windows, maybe with stained glass transoms... Wish I had one.

Have an elderly neighbour whose house is pickled in aspic. It is an immaculate study of the 1930's. I love, love, love it.
He never married so the house has no feminine touches yet manages to be cosy. He has a gramophone and uses it on Sundays.
We went for tea and had spam sandwiches with the crusts cut off.
I luffs him.

Dungeondragon15 · 22/04/2018 15:08

I prefer 1930s to 1970s or new builds. I don't like the style of my house but we prioritised size, location, nice garden and good schools. If we had more money we would have picked a nicer house style but we don't and from the sounds of it neither do you. I can see why your DH is getting annoyed.

Dungeondragon15 · 22/04/2018 15:09

Also, how is 1930s "post war". The second world war didn't end until 1945...

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 15:10

I bet I would adore your neighbours house DameDoom.

CoolCarrie · 22/04/2018 15:15

mandieinatree, that picture of the two semis linked by the glass room is stunning!

pallisers · 22/04/2018 15:19

Post the Great War (WW1)

CoolCarrie · 22/04/2018 15:19

Georgian house look great , but the loads of stairs, high heating bills, and tiny gardens are a real total pain in the arse after the novelty wears off!

SerenDippitty · 22/04/2018 15:26

I love my 1930’s semi. Elegant alcoves, lovely wood block flooring, high ceilings, stained glass windows. No pebble dash.

Sallycinnamum · 22/04/2018 15:27

We lived in a beautiful Victorian house along with rattling sash windows and damp. I loved the house but my 1930s semi is never cold, has a huge garden and we're about to convert the loft into a large ensuite bedroom.

I loved my Victorian house but I don't think we'd live in one again. It was just so high maintenance.

longtallwalker · 22/04/2018 15:30

Lived in a lovely one in Teddington in a whole street of other 1930s semis (well 1927 to be precise). It was a lovely democratic street. No one felt 'better' than anyone else. All very alike. All extended out back and all has loft conversions (v amenable shape for a big lift conversion). I loved my semi! It suited out modern/mid century style v well too.
I'm a fan! Much lighter and brighter than the nearby Victorian/Edwardian houses in the next street 😎

longtallwalker · 22/04/2018 15:31

And some nice little splashes of original stained glass.

DameDoom · 22/04/2018 15:34

Tawdry you would. He was a master baker in the olden days and his bread is out of this world. The gramophone crackles along to the fire. He has no wifi-type shit so when you walk in, nothing bombards you sensorally.
He also has a seven year old rescue staffie called Beyonce - he didn't have the heart to rename herSmile

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 22/04/2018 15:34

Swap you for my grim 1980s semi. Give me a 1930s semi any day!

Squeegle · 22/04/2018 15:40

I love our semi; nice generous hall, feels airy compared with new builds. No ridiculous en suites taking up all the space! And lovely and warm compared to our Victorian terrace. So I’m a fan!

Youthgonewild · 22/04/2018 16:33

I adore my 1930's semi complete with parquet flooring in the hallway and big back garden.

We have pebbledash but it has been painted over so doesn't look awful. The huge bay windows are great 👍🏼 as well as stained glass and lead piping in the front door.

We've recently done up the two main bedrooms, garden, front room and had a brand new bathroom put in. I wouldn't say this was my forever home but I adore the features of this house, it has so much character.

Youthgonewild · 22/04/2018 16:37

My box room is my office plus additional storage. Admittedly all it is god for Grin

RidingWindhorses · 22/04/2018 16:39

You say there are no nice 1930s semis
I believe mine to be very nice thank you

In what way have I not accepted that other people like them? You like yours, doesn't mean that I would.

MinaPaws · 22/04/2018 16:47

Our hous eis 1930s and I love it. But it's not one of those semis/terraces where the thrid bedroom is three inches wide. They are a bit annoying.

Things to love about 1930s houses:
Room size
Room shape. They're squarer than Victorian houses, so don't have annoying alcoves that don't fit your furniture
OSP on the driveway
More light than Victorian terraces. I felt my mood lift as soon as we moved because there was so much more daylight in our house.
Big garden
Two receptions - so one playroom and one smart room
Loads of storage, as they always have a garage that's too small for a car but fits bikes, garden stuff etc
Lots have lovely details like Art Deco fireplaces and stained glass windows.
they are in areas purposely designed to be full of families so likely to be close to a school, nursery, medical centre, playgroups, brownie and scout packs etc.

MinaPaws · 22/04/2018 16:48

Oh yes, the parquet flooring's lovely too.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/04/2018 16:52

Can you set me up with your neighbour, DameDoom? Despite the considerable age difference, I feel we are meant for each other!

I will of course honour his pre-existing relationship with Beyoncé.

troodiedoo · 22/04/2018 16:55

I have a 30's detached house. It's very light and spacious and has a lovely stained glass window on the landing.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 22/04/2018 16:56

I love my 1930s semi. Not a bit of pebble dash, no box room, loads of original features.

I’m not quite sure what there is not to like tbh. Well proportioned, bay windows, big drive, big garden, big rooms Confused. Big demand for them in our village.

Guess we can’t all like the same things though.
