To think someone else could’ve made better use of this Marathon place?

its obviously really difficult to get a place in the Marathon... a record amount of people applied for the ballot and after that you have to try and get a charity place and pledge to raise X amount for them. My DH is running for a charity and we have worked really hard to raise the required money, having a raffle, quiz, auction, getting sponsors and match funding by his company means that he has raised over 5k so far (without the matching). I know a few others running and they’ve done all sorts to raise the money for their charities and really worked at it.

I saw Katie Price post earlier that she was running for the British Lung foundation, and nosily clicked her link to see how much she’d raised... having a celebrity run for you must be amazing, they have such a platform and can attract massive donors.

She had made £500. Now, that’s a lot of money to me! But it seems she only very recently made her page and publicised it... it makes me feel annoyed for the people I know who would’ve loved a place and raised far far more.

I’m sure she will raise more (by tomorrow!), but to give the charity the best chance of money they need, surely posting this more than a couple of days before the Marathon should have been a prerequisite?

Just annoyed me. I’m probably being unreasonable! Grin

@Goshitshighuphere
Redcar is in North Yorkshire

No it isn't. So maybe not top quality journalism

Yes it is..

honeyishrunkthekid · 22/04/2018 22:44

Her just giving page now states she's raised £3812
Well not all bad then. And raised awareness. So in answer YABU. It's a good amount to raise and it was a charity spot

honeyishrunkthekid · 22/04/2018 22:46

My bad that was her 2011 one. She's raise £2145 for this one. Which is still a good amount of money IME

I might be wrong but I think the "celeb" places are not allocated the same as the club/charity /ballot runners. If you look at "celeb" numbers they are in a different sequence and I think a different colour than normal runners.

It depends what you're considering. It is its own administrative area, has its own council. Not a county. But there are also ceremonial counties as I understand, and in that case its probably part of North Yorkshire I suppose. I deal in the former, and it irritates me when everyone assumes we all live in a county. There are no counties in the North east anyone, despite one area being called County Durham!

The London Marathon is about ordinary people, not slebs who can't be bothered to put the training in. (My DD raised more than she did and KP could've raised mega money given her exposure so sorry I'm not impressed). Watching it yesterday and seeing the pain and the triumph on the faces of the ordinary runners was truly inspiring. I shouted myself hoarse.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/04/2018 06:48

Agree about Katie Price who just seems to me to be all about publicising herself rather than any good causes.

Can’t really get on board with slating the Ramsays though; both of them have proved more than once that they can go the distance and have done a significant amount of charity work. Two of the Ramsay children ran it this year for GOSH.

AuntieStella · 23/04/2018 06:49

What sort of place did she actually have?

Because if she had a ballot place, then there is no need to fundraise, but you can still hook up with a charity or run to raise funds for a cause which does not have places to give out.

If it's a charity place, then she'll need to make up from her own money the required minimum donation - the amount is set by the charity concerned and does vary.

Elite athletes qualify by time in previous marathons (clearly doesn't apply here) and clubs registered with British Athletics can apply for an allocation and then decide for themselves which of their members take the place/s.

I don't know how celebrities apply. I thought it was via the charity place route. Because the charity might decide the awareness raising from having people mention the charity icw the sleb has a brand value.

RunMummyRun68 · 23/04/2018 06:53

Rousette THANKYOU!!!

Support from the crowds was amazing yesterday! I've run London marathon before but yesterday was something else!

Fintress · 23/04/2018 07:00

Personally, I’m tired of all the charity runners, it’s their poor friends, families and colleagues who fork out for the sponsor money.

That is not always the case. When my husband run marathons it was his company that sponsored him for a charity of their choice.

Ki0612 · 23/04/2018 07:03

I literally don't know a single other celeb that took part in the marathon or their chosen charities. Would she have received so much publicity if she had completed it? I know what charity she ran for. So if her aim was to raise awareness of the charity it worked.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 23/04/2018 08:08

@BlusterandBoom you know Jade Goody has been dead since 2009?

StealthPolarBear · 23/04/2018 08:08

Oh so if she doesn't finish she needs to pay the sponsorship money herself? Fair enough, and do she has raised money for charity. Given she did no training, she'd have been better off cutting out the rigmarole and just having over the dosh but her choice.

Ohmydayslove · 23/04/2018 08:10

I read she finished but it took her hours?

Springnowplease · 23/04/2018 08:16

It really is time this former soft porn model disappeared from public view. She's become a caricature of herself.

Springnowplease · 23/04/2018 08:16

*She's become

Roussette · 23/04/2018 08:22

Ohmyday No. She didn't even do 9 miles. Went off to a cafe.

Just had a look at all the celebs and their finishing times, ooooh my DD beat most of them proud mother moment especially as DD is not a runner and when she started training she could only manage 3 miles and that exhausted her. Grin

RunMummyRun68 · 23/04/2018 09:57

Biggest celeb running yesterday was Kathrine switzer.... google her! She's in her 70's now

And Ben Smith from 401 challenge

HildaZelda · 23/04/2018 14:42

As usual with Katie Price, it was all about 'me me me'. She needs to have a look at Rochelle Humes who actually trained properly for it, put in the effort and completed it.

TriHard27 · 24/04/2018 19:40

I’ve met Ben at a few marathons now, top, top guy. He more than deserves his little celebrity especially compared to KP. Grin
