To think someone else could’ve made better use of this Marathon place?

its obviously really difficult to get a place in the Marathon... a record amount of people applied for the ballot and after that you have to try and get a charity place and pledge to raise X amount for them. My DH is running for a charity and we have worked really hard to raise the required money, having a raffle, quiz, auction, getting sponsors and match funding by his company means that he has raised over 5k so far (without the matching). I know a few others running and they’ve done all sorts to raise the money for their charities and really worked at it.

I saw Katie Price post earlier that she was running for the British Lung foundation, and nosily clicked her link to see how much she’d raised... having a celebrity run for you must be amazing, they have such a platform and can attract massive donors.

She had made £500. Now, that’s a lot of money to me! But it seems she only very recently made her page and publicised it... it makes me feel annoyed for the people I know who would’ve loved a place and raised far far more.

I’m sure she will raise more (by tomorrow!), but to give the charity the best chance of money they need, surely posting this more than a couple of days before the Marathon should have been a prerequisite?

Just annoyed me. I’m probably being unreasonable! Grin

I think the publicity to the charity is probably worth more than a couple of grand in sponsorship.

Lots of people enter and don't run. That's life.

StopBeingNosey
You’re not being asked to fund a hobby though really are you?
You’re donating to charity.

i got asked to sponsor. the answer is no - it is your hobby and the marathon consumes huge resources.

i donate direct to chariites. sorry if that doesnt up your personal target.

GertieMotherwell · 22/04/2018 21:03

I actively look for someone to sponsor

GertieMotherwell · 22/04/2018 21:03

..... if I’m not asked

backsackcraic · 22/04/2018 21:04

I see your point but KP could donate a lot more of her own money to the charity and I'm sure she will!

NewYearNewMe18 · 22/04/2018 21:05

The 39-year-old TV personality, who was raising money for the British Lung Foundation, was forced to quit with a knee injury and her giant lung costume was therefore carried to the finish line by police, three hours into the race

she is a joke and said she struggled because of a knee injury

i really dont see how she is promoting the charity, many think negative of her and her exploits, how is she showing it in a positive light and getting people to dig deep

i just dont get how people are saying she getting lots of publicity,i think its negative

StealthPolarBear · 22/04/2018 21:07

If she didn't run or finish then she hasn't raised any money for charity

moodance · 22/04/2018 21:10

Lots of people didn't finish the race ... not sure why bitching about a person who tried something and didn't successfully finish ... it is better to try than not at all!

Still an achievement.

Nicknacky · 22/04/2018 21:12

But she didn't try, that's the point. I would have had full admiration for her if she had trained but by her own admission she didn't.

And I would think that about anyone that was fortunate enough to get a place over others that really want it.

percypig · 22/04/2018 21:14

I think the Ramseys had a ‘team’, I saw pictures on Twitter of what looked like their older kids

bearbehind · 22/04/2018 21:17

There is no way she was running in than costume, with hair extensions down to her waist and full make up, and not a soul in sight around her.

I hope she has raised awareness and money for her charity but the way she's done it leaves a bitter taste.

TheYesWoman · 22/04/2018 21:21

She was doing a personal appearance in the north east at 2am this morning. She did no training. Pretty disgraceful way to treat your charity IMO.

ConciseandNice · 22/04/2018 21:22

Firstly the spaces that celebs get don’t take away from the spaces they allocate to the masses.

Secondly, the unless you gain many many thousands in sponsorship the only entity gaining from your marathon -apart from your fitness - is the London Marathon organisers. Charities spend hundreds of thousands on places they could be given freely. They’re not. Even the London boroughs are promised money for their resources that they don’t actually get.

If you really want to raise money, run one of the other many many awesome marathons around the country, pay £40 or so for your own place and run. I get the kudos of the London Marathon I really do, but unless I got a ballot place I wouldn’t run it. I’d run for charity in other races and fund my place myself (and I have done many times over).

TheYesWoman · 22/04/2018 21:22

Katie Price is supposed to be doing the London Marathon on Sunday. It's pretty well known that she's done no training and has only raised £250 for charity, but what's less well known is that those are actually the high spots of her planning.

Pricey is also lined up to do a PA at Aruba's nightclub in Redcar on Saturday night at 2am. Redcar is in North Yorkshire, approximately a five-hour drive from London. Runners will gather at 8am for the start of the race, and Pricey is due to give pre-race interviews around 9am.

And this still might not be her biggest problem. Because yesterday, race organisers couldn't see if she was even registered for the race at all.

Best of luck, Katie!

SaucyJane · 22/04/2018 21:25

It does seem as if she was mostly interested in raising publicity for herself. Maybe I'm being unfair, but it would have been better to pull out and make a big donation, surely?

A friend of a friend smashed it by breaking 3 hours whilst running in a full on wedding dress in that heat - I don't actually know him, but am so chuffed by the videos/pics on Facebook. Now THAT's an amazing achievement, absolutely brilliant Smile

Fintress · 22/04/2018 21:29

Well done Mr PoppinsPenguins! That's the charity my husband use to run for in his marathon days.

Roussette · 22/04/2018 21:33

She makes me sick. Whoever thinks she raised awareness for the charity is wrong. I'm very involved with a charity and we wouldn't touch her with a bargepole because it's bad publicity and would put people off.

To actually agree to do this and then she can't be arsed to train is beyond pathetic. My DD1 raised over £4,000 bit by bit and ran today. She had to work so hard at getting her place. She's been training since September and hasn't missed a session to enable her to do this today. The tears of relief from her when she crossed the finish line in this heat today and the sheer effort and hard work to get round was what it's all about. Her knees are hurting so much, she is physically beyond exhausted. I am beyond proud of her

And there's that idiot KP who can't even be arsed to train and buggers off after 10km. Pathetic woman.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 22/04/2018 21:34

And most telling, she didn't have a registration number on her on any photos

I've just looked back at the photos on the hateful Daily Mail and you're right. Her hair obscures where the number would be. I thought it was a strange way to wear your hair on a really hot day like today.

I don't reckon she had a place. It's just publicity seeking nonsense.

GreenVelvetwithfrills · 22/04/2018 21:37

Personally, I’m tired of all the charity runners, it’s their poor friends, families and colleagues who fork out for the sponsor money.

Why can’t people just take part because they want to, because they want to achieve something for themselves, I’d much prefer that, than having to pay a ridiculously high entry fee, and then raise money to pay the huge salaries of executives at a charity.

Goshitshighuphere · 22/04/2018 21:38

Redcar is in North Yorkshire

No it isn't. So maybe not top quality journalism.

GreenVelvetwithfrills · 22/04/2018 21:38

And the costumes? Just run, can’t see any valid point in wearing costumes, with apologies to the poster above.

SaucyJane · 22/04/2018 21:38

Green - but couldn't they do that at any of the less high profile marathons?

I'd love to run a marathon one day, but I'd struggle to make it to the end of the road at the moment Blush
