To ask about prison?

Peanutbutterjelly1 · 21/04/2018 02:23

Hello everyone.. Just started watching orange is the new black... Me and my husband love it!!!

I've always been pretty fascinated by prison whenever I come into contact with anyone who has been inside I'm immediately interested and always ask what was it like? My own mum was born in Holloway in the 70s as my nan was in there for a string of petty crime.

So my question is have any of you ever been to prison? What did you do? And what was it like?

I know this is a weird question but it's a genuine post. I told my husband the other day that doing time is on my bucket list he thought I was crazy and he is probably right. I think its because prison hasn't changed much in the last 50 years and i am always really interested in anything that has remained the same. I remeber when i started high school it was the same school my dad had attended 25 years before it was the same apart from a few licks of paint he once came to a parents evening and he was pointing to classrooms and certian areas in the corridors and telling stories about his school days i thought it was amazing.

He was being tactful. He meant "fucking stupid".

Ruffeddi · 21/04/2018 10:57

Think back to your comprehensive school days. Think of the roughest, most frightening bully in the school. Now imagine that person is now an adult. Now multiply him/her by a few hundred. Hold them all against their will in a small, overcrowded space. Add in abuse, addictions, sexual assaults, drugs, possible SEN and major mental health problems. That's roughly what prison is like.

HTH.

KarmaStar · 21/04/2018 11:50

Do you like watching people suffer op?

vampirethriller · 21/04/2018 11:54

A female friend of mine was in a London prison last year. Two women killed themselves while she was there. Another died because she wasn't allowed out of her cell for vital medication. They were locked up for most of the day, ate in their cells, alone. Unless they were doing a course or working they were locked up alone.
You have a horrible mind.

MismatchedStripySocks · 21/04/2018 11:57

Ooh i’m Fascinated too OP, though it was just me. On YouTube, there is an American documentary about several people, including a police officer Shock, who agreed to be locked up for 30 days. They are filmed and it’s fascinating. I love watching all the documentarys and watching people getting told off by the judge....shuts up Blush

It’s all on YouTube!

Flutterbyeee · 21/04/2018 12:00

Doing time is on your bucket list?? Are you a complete twat or just looking for attention?

Crabbitstick · 21/04/2018 12:02

Watch a BBC documentary called Girls Behind Bars. Can get it on YouTube. It's based in a female prison in Scotland. Having worked there it a very realistic portrayal.

Flutterbyeee · 21/04/2018 12:03

My children have met their dad twice as he made mistakes and ended up inside. They will get to hug him in around 14 years. Stop being a prick.

SealSong · 21/04/2018 12:07

I expect the OP has got the message by now about her bucket list, no need for nastiness.

Flutterbyeee · 21/04/2018 12:10

No...everyone just say what you feel and fuck everyone else. She is a silly little girl living in cloud cuckoo land. Worrying part is she may be a parent.

findingmyfeet12 · 21/04/2018 12:14

I haven't read all the posts but op your post sounds awful.

Most of the people behind bars never had a chance to begin with (I've worked in the criminal justice system). These are the people who our society has failed in some way or who are paying their dues.

What you need is a time machine so you can go back and look at a Victorian freak show. Don't forget to take a stick to poke through the bars.

Peanutbutterjelly1 · 21/04/2018 12:20

I do understand that people have had bad experiences regarding prison either as an inmate or visitor and the bucket list comment was in jest but I am very interested in UK prisons it particular they hold so much history. I have one family member in particular who loves prison and does all he can to make sure be ends up in there and I've always wondered why i would be really interested to know what actually goes on inside which is why im asking all of you because i feel the answers I get from all of you on here would be different from someone I may speak to face to face. I also knew a lady once who told me going to prison was the best thing that ever happened to her she wasn't saying it was like a holiday camp but I think what she was saying was that it saved her.

I'm sorry if this post has upset as I say not my intention at all what I meant was is there anything that happened in prison that surprised you?

My cousin spent some time in prison. His cellmate overdosed and died one night and due to staff shortages he spent the whole night with the body.

My cousin died not long after he got out due to an overdose leaving behind 4 children. I'm not saying prison caused it but some things can torment and lead you to a terrible place.

OP I hope you realise how difficult your post came across. The repercussions of prison for some people never go away

And thank you seal but I have no problem with a flamming of nastiness. There are some really sensible replies on here which answer my question I'm simply skipping through the rest because their boring Grin thats the problem with mumsnet it gets a bit tired when they flame every poster on aibu. There are a lot of people who are really interested in this topic that's how books are written and documentaries are made. We can't all have the same interests and you cant please everyone.

OP why not go and visit a prison and tell the inmates that it is on your bucket list to do time and see what they say to you? Biscuit

PCSO = Police Community Support Officer or Police Custody and Security Officer in Scotland

More info

A PCSO in Scotland is different from the job profile in England and Wales, where a PCSO is the abbreviation for a Police Community Support Officer. In Scotland, the abbreviation refers to a Police Custody and Security Officer, which is a completely different job.

What a Police Custody and Security Officer does
The posting will be within a police station, rather than in the community, where you’ll be responsible for the care of people brought into custody. Your main duties will be supervise prisoners in custody, and play a part in the transportation of prisoners to courts, hospitals, prison, or arrange temporary holdings at other police stations, in situations when prisoners need transported to different districts for court hearings.

Any crime that’s committed, the Police Officers will be the people out in the communities, such as what the PCSOs in England and Wales do. When the police bring those people into custody, in Scotland it’s the duties of the PCSO to first book them in at the custody desk, then monitor the safety of people brought into custody by the police. There may be occasions when people are boisterous when police bring them into custody, and on those occasions you will be required to assist officers maintain control of the custody area, and help with getting people into the cells, while they calm down. You’ll be dealing with many different people and sometimes the crimes can be heinous, while others aren’t. You’ll need to maintain discretion, which will require strong people skills.

Peanutbutterjelly1 · 21/04/2018 12:38

Jolly I am really sorry to hear that that must of been very difficult for you and your family. I absolutely do understand how hard this post must of been for you to read but I do thank you for your answer.

Mylearnedfriend I dont know the details but I think she had a truly awful life before hand I haven't seen her in a number of years so i dont know how she is getting on now but I do know that before she went to prison she had already had her child removed because of heavy drug use. There were other things going on but I dont know the full details and i wouldn't like to tell you all a half story or say something I dont know is 100% true.

Notevilstepmother · 21/04/2018 12:42

It’s ok (if odd) to be interested.

It’s not ok to make insensitive childish comments about it being on your bucket list.

Sorry to be rude but you sound like you need help to me. Gamourising prison when your mum was born inside is something I think you should see a therapist about.

Your other family member trying to get inside sounds a little worrying too.

Gemini69 · 21/04/2018 12:44

as an 8 year old Child... I was taken unwillingly ... to visit 'someone' in Prison... it was Barlinnie Prison in Glasgow ... I just remember lots and lots of locked doors and keys... and glass between myself my Mother and the 'Prisoner' .. Hmm I'm late 40's now and still remember is like it was yesterday...

Social Services were not fit for purpose in those days....

CaraDeanna · 21/04/2018 12:44

@AnnieOH1 thanks for that. You learn something new every day!

OP I think you need to stop as that hole of yours is getting deeper and deeper. Leave it alone.

Catsrawesome · 21/04/2018 12:44

There is nothing wrong with being curious at all. However, to have doing time on your bucklist is downright disturbing. Infact, I’m finding it very difficult to imagine anyone without a mental health issue, wanting that on their bucklist, let alone broadcasting it!
Have you also thought out the aweful crime you are going to commit in order to end up there. Sorry but stealing from someone or harming someone in order to get into jail doesn’t make you sound like a very nice person. I’m also amazed you run into all these former inmates. You must hang out in a very rough crowd.

SirGawain · 21/04/2018 12:52

I have one family member in particular who loves prison and does all he can to make sure be ends up in there and I've always wondered why
Possibly because he cannot cope with everyday life and in prison he does not have to make decisions and cope with providing for himself. He is probably socially inadequate. None of this means he goes to prison because it’s nice. He goes because, for him it’s easier than life outside. Just use your imagination OP!

ilovesooty · 21/04/2018 12:53

So sorry to hear that the crassness and stupidity of your thread being evidenced bores you OP.
