To dress my baby in babygrow a

A few times in the last few weeks I've had comments that my baby must be 'dressed for bed' or 'has nobody got you dressed yet'. My Dd is only 12 weeks old but I don't plan on changing things soon. I love baby grows and I'm pretty sure they must be the comfiest thing around when your little. I've had her in few outfits (mainly just for a photo and to say to people she's worn their gift) but on the whole she's in babygrows/sleepsuits. I don't suppose I'm being unreasonable but am I being unusual? We've got years of choosing clothes and 'matching' things up ahead of us. What does everyone else do?

Haha I put my last child in them til he was about 18 months (footless ones) and got the same comments- couldn't care less, he was my last baby!

lollypop13 · 18/04/2018 22:07

Love them! My DS is 18 months and I'm gutted my favourite shop stop at 18 months

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 18/04/2018 22:08

My dd is 9 months old and crawling around. She is in babygrows 99% of the time still. She is comfy and the right temp. Who cares what you dress them in as long as they are clean, fed and comfortable. Although i was horrified in next today seeing hard denim shorts for as small as 0-3 months. Stupid..

TeachingPuffin · 18/04/2018 22:08

Would someone please explain what the difference is between a babygro and a romper? In short, simple sentences please Grin #confused

Happymummy1991 · 18/04/2018 22:11

I dressed my first dc in outfits during the day and sleepsuits at night. I dress second dc in sleepsuits pretty much all the time and will probably do so until he is crawling. Outfits are so much hassle and not even comfortable for babies. Plus you can get some really gorgeous sleepsuits. I will put him in rompers on hot days though or just a vest if we are at home.

NutElla5x · 18/04/2018 22:11

Dressing a young baby up is for the mother not the child.A baby just wants to be warm and comfy, which in my opinion a babygrow is ideal for, plus they wash easily, don't need ironing and look soo cute :)

FrozenMargarita17 · 18/04/2018 22:12

Haha sometimes my dd is in her sleepsuit from the night before all day until she gets in the bath for bedtime! She's a baby and doesn't care :)

kaytee87 · 18/04/2018 22:13

@TeachingPuffin a baby grow has long sleeves and legs (usually covering feet and sometimes with fold over hand covers), a romper has short sleeves and legs.

bluechameleon · 18/04/2018 22:13

I like babygrows but I also like soft dungarees and trousers. Also, I use the sling several times a day and it isn't recommended to have them in suits with feet in the sling. So 10wo DS tends to wear dungarees, leggings or footless rompers during the day and sleepsuits at night.

Figmentofimagination · 18/04/2018 22:14

@TeachingPuffin a baby grow (also called a sleepsuit) is an all in one outfit with feet, a romper is an all in one without feet. Rompers can also vary in sleeve length and trouser length.

My DS is nearly 1 and I still put him in baby grows if we aren't going anywhere for the day. If we are going out it's body suits or long sleeved tops and joggers. And now the weather is getting warmer he'll be wearing short rompers as well.

This is one of those threads where the comments bear no similarity to real life. At least in my experience.

I go to loads of baby groups and I never see babies in baby grows beyond like the first six weeks.

TeachingPuffin · 18/04/2018 22:16

ThanksSmile shan't ask what you call an outfit with full length sleeves but no trouser legs so much to learn! I realised the other day I have no clue what babies wear, or his many layersBlush

clippityclop · 18/04/2018 22:18

Smile and do as you like. As long as he's comfy and happy who cares.

reetgood · 18/04/2018 22:19

It has never occurred to me not to put my baby in anything but a babygro! He’s 4 months old.

I’ve always wondered why people put little person clothes on babies. I realised this was because they look mega cute only the other day, when I ran out of cardigans and put in a jacket.

I’m still not going to put him in anything with a waistband though: sicky baby and waistbands are not a good idea.

astoundedgoat · 18/04/2018 22:20

DD1 was a very spitty-uppy baby, so it was babygros all the way for the firsts yr, and when dd2 turned up, well I had a year's worth of babygros, so that's what she wore too.

MyOtherProfile · 18/04/2018 22:22

My babies wore baby grows for at least a year. My dd often wore a pinafore style dress over the top.

viques · 18/04/2018 22:25

I love babies in baby grows, everything kept together, nothing rucking up, soft fabric, toes warm, easy for them to kick, wriggle and move. A blanket on to keep warm, blanket off to keep cool.

I think it depends on the average age of the mums at the group. This may just be my local area but groups that are heavy on older mums tend to have kids in babygrows or combos of them and cardis where as ones with mainly younger mums it’s outfits.
I know around here it’s only ever been young mums who have made comments about babies being in pj’s either to me or within my hearing, or grandparents of baby girls who have purchased lots of cute frilly dresses.

Personally I prefer babygrows not white ones tho they irrationally annoy me but each to their own.

tigerrun · 18/04/2018 22:27

I love babies in babygrows - always found babies in little dresses and shoes or jeans and tops a bit odd (especially the shoes, just why!?). Mine were in babygros nearly all the time until way after one I may have cut the feet off the ends when it got to summer and they'd grown out of the biggest size.

People commenting IRL are dicks and should be ignored (or asked to hold the baby just after a feed so they get puke down their backs and then we see who is wearing appropriate clothing...)

Bitsandbobsalot · 18/04/2018 22:28

I’m pregnant atm and once baby is here in August I intend keeping him in baby grows, rompers and vests (when it’s hot) for as long as possible. Imo there is nothing more beautiful than a baby in a white baby grow all comfortable. I’ve even told people not to buy clothes as I don’t want him in “proper outfits” Hmm till he’s older So no Yanbu.

ArcheryAnnie · 18/04/2018 22:28

I loved babygros for my DS - people making comments about yours are being ridiculous. They are soft, easy to clean, don't catch on anything or get in the way of them moving - they are fantastic.

Things like tiny jeans, etc, are cute in the shop but look ridiculous on actual babies.

YerAuntFanny · 18/04/2018 22:30

YANBU.

#1 was in outfits pretty much straight away because I thought that's what you were supposed to do and my Mum helpfully explained to me that having the clothing/sleepsuit differentiation helps baby form an idea of day/night routine.

This proved to be a lot of shit! He didn't sleep through the night until 3.5 years of age.

#2 was in babygrows exclusively until about 6 months then it was into leggings and long sleeved vests with a cardigan just because it was more practical easier for us.

She also never slept through until 4 years old.

In summary babies can't tell the fucking time nor do they care what's you enforce on them, clothing makes absolutely no difference to them as long as they're warm, clean and fed.

WhenDoISleep · 18/04/2018 22:31

Both my DC wore baby grows during the day until 12 months+. Even after that point they wore them if we weren't doing anything in particular that day. Once standing / walking, I used footless baby grows during the day.

I had slightly nicer ones for daywear and hey always seemed comfortable and I thought it most practical. During the hotter weather, I had super sweet shorties (baby grow with short sleeves and short legs) - one of my favourite photos of DC2 was taken when he was around 14 months running round the park in a gorgeous green and white polka shortie.

Nettleskeins · 18/04/2018 22:32

I think that it is important that a baby's toes get the air occasionally? I know that if I sleep with socks on I get very over heated, presumably a baby feels the same if all day and night it is wrapped up from neck to wrist? There's also the issue of sunshine - presumably a baby needs to get a bit of sun on its ankles even if it is wearing little socks?

I suspect most [older] babies pull their hats and shoes and socks off for a reason. They like being free of coverings sometimes perhaps?

try sleeping in a sleeping bag with cotton socks on. not very comfortable I found...whereas a pair of pjs and a warm covering...

in the summer babies can easily overheat if overwrapped, layers of clothes are much better with gaps for air.

mehhh · 18/04/2018 22:33

I LOVE baby grows they look adorable!! From about 5 months or so I changed dd into tops and leggings (usually matching) so pretty much the same, she still wears that pretty much daily!
