To worry a bit that my newborn is sleeping for 4 hours at a time?

He’s 6 days old and my second baby. The first was always waking up every hour or two but this one just sleeps and sleeps.

He’s almost back to his birthweight already and when he feeds he latched well and poos and wees loads.

Should I just be thankful for now and wait for him to change inevitably in the coming weeks?

Also he just is happy to lie there in his cot awake sometimes. My firstborn wouldn’t lie down awake for one second.

Sorry about it being in aibu but sleep is full of new mums and I wanted experienced mums with older kids to tell me this is ok (or not!)

Mine were both exactly like that when they were tiny. Enjoy it! And congratulations.

VileyRose · 18/04/2018 11:34

I used to generally leave mine at that age if gaining weight x

SaucyJane · 18/04/2018 11:34

No useful advice - just wanted to say that my DD2 is the same. She's 3 weeks now and sleeps most of the day/night but with a really wakeful few hours from about 6-11pm. I wake her for feeds not less than every 3 hours if she's sleeping. She's been checked for jaundice; the HV wasn't worried, so I'm trying not to!

I've googled it a lot and it seems v common.

PineappleScrunchie · 18/04/2018 11:34

So long as he is waking to feed, feeding well and gaining weight then it sounds like you’ve won the baby lottery Grin

PineappleScrunchie · 18/04/2018 11:36

You could consider waking every three hours to feed during the day but definitely no need to wake a healthy baby at night.

HumpHumpWhale · 18/04/2018 11:38

You've won the baby lottery. I would probably wake every 3 hours during the day just until he gets to birth weight. But then stop. And pray it lasts!

MiniTheMinx · 18/04/2018 11:39

Enjoy it

DS2 was like this. I thought also that it was common for them to loose a little weight at this stage, before gaining again.

gamerchick · 18/04/2018 11:41

Just enjoy it. They usually have a big ‘wake up’ at some point and it all changes.

gamerchick · 18/04/2018 11:42

Being born must be a knackering experience for a baby really. It stands to reason hey might need a bit of time to recover.

Ilovecamping · 18/04/2018 11:42

DD2 was the same started sleeping through night at 7 weeks. Enjoy while you can.

EekThreek · 18/04/2018 11:44

My DD1 was absolutely typical newborn sleeper who woke every 2-3 hours until about 6 weeks when she started doing an 8 hour stretch overnight.

DS woke every 1.5 hours until he was nearly 2. Didn't sleep through reliably and consistently until 3 (4 months ago).

DD2 is 10 weeks old and has slept through since the day we brought her home. 11-5 the first couple of days, 11-6 for a couple of weeks after that, and now 9-7. She naps in the day too. Has consistently gained weight and is an all round happy, content little soul. Apparently, some newborns are just amazing sleepers!

Congratulations on your lovely sleeping newborn. I never would have believed they existed had I not witnessed one of my own - especially afterDS! Grin

Mammyloveswine · 18/04/2018 11:45

My second ds is so much more chilled than his brother was, woke a lot for a feed but never really lost weight.

At 3 months old he now sleeps through the night and is always just looking around and smiling!

Enjoy him, he sounds like an 'easy" baby! Congratulations!

CocoDeMoll · 18/04/2018 11:52

Thanks for all the lovely replies. He looks nice and pink so no jaundice.

I hope it lasts!!

I had the same with DS, i was setting my alarm for every 4 hours also as he sometimes wanted to sleep longer. Midwife said it waa good to wake him at 4.5 hrs latest but 4 hrs was absolutely fine, DS has also lost a lot of weight so in your case i would think that's no problem at all. Hope you csn get some sleep when baby does!

LetsSplashMummy · 18/04/2018 12:09

My DD was like this and it never worsened. She basically wanted fed 3am, 7, 11, 3pm, 7, 11.... At 6-8 weeks she dropped 3am - it was disconcertingly easy, she even did a poo at the same time every day. She was also always big for her age, and looks/is really healthy, so she wasn't suffering in any way. However, she is now 6 and it isn't that easy getting her up for school (really likes sleeping) so I might pay for it in the teenage years.

DS wasn't like this, so it was nothing I did or can take credit for.

gryffen · 18/04/2018 12:26

My daughter was same and she slept through night from 5 weeks old.

Welcome to winning the baby lottery and as long as baby is healthy and playful then all good.

Baubletrouble43 · 18/04/2018 12:27

Sounds fine. My dd1 was like this. 4 hrs quickly became 5 at night then 6.7 etc. At 5 weeks she slept 10 to 7. Dc 2 and 3 ( twins) weren't like this at all. Oh the shock.

Baubletrouble43 · 18/04/2018 12:27

Oh and she gained from day 1

Ragwort · 18/04/2018 12:31

Sounds fine - my first (and only) baby was like this - slept beautifully, at least 4 hours at a time, happy to be left alone his cot and self settle - 7pm - 7am at night with one short night feed from the day we got back from hospital - I have honestly never had a disturbed night in my life Blush - making up for it now as a teenager and I wait to hear him get home safely Grin.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2018 12:31

My son was like this for the first 3 weeks, then after his first growth he got much worse at sleeping. So make the most of it as it may not last!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 18/04/2018 12:48

My youngest was like this. I remember phoning my mum in tears asking if the saying "never wake a sleeping baby" had a time limit on it! He's 13 now and perfectly healthy. I'm jealous of your newborn squishy baby Grin

kaytee87 · 18/04/2018 12:49

Feeding well, gaining weight and sleeping well. Sounds like a dream, don't worry op.

Merryoldgoat · 18/04/2018 12:54

I had exactly the same - my second DS is now 9 weeks and is well past that stage.

It’s very unsettling but I had similar advice - if you’re having good wees and poos, good colour and nice even breathing, enjoy it while it lasts.

Congrats.

Mydoghatesthebath · 18/04/2018 13:03

Hi op this is where it starts Wink

Completely mind boggling how children from the same parents are completely different from the start.

With mine ds1 needed cuddies to sleep and as soon as awake wanted attention. still cuddly now (28) Grin

Ds2 no cuddies to sleep and happy to lie in his cot awake. Still very independent (27)

Ds3 slept and slept. Love that kid Grin (24) loves a lie in Grin

Ds4 fussy needy cuddly took 18 months to sleep through (22)

Dd5 slept and slept through 6 weeks (20)

Dd6 fussiest of the lot but had many arms to hold her. (18) Grin

Don’t worry enjoy the differences and congratulations Flowers

Heighwayqueen · 18/04/2018 13:40

Never wake a sleeping baby 😀 If he's eating well and weeing and pooing I’d enjoy it while it lasts 😁
