To worry a bit that my newborn is sleeping for 4 hours at a time?

He’s 6 days old and my second baby. The first was always waking up every hour or two but this one just sleeps and sleeps.

He’s almost back to his birthweight already and when he feeds he latched well and poos and wees loads.

Should I just be thankful for now and wait for him to change inevitably in the coming weeks?

Also he just is happy to lie there in his cot awake sometimes. My firstborn wouldn’t lie down awake for one second.

Sorry about it being in aibu but sleep is full of new mums and I wanted experienced mums with older kids to tell me this is ok (or not!)

That's all that matters. Some babies sleep like this and are more content. Enjoy it while it lasts. I have been trying to get my 6 month old to sleep since 12. Got her to sleep, sat down for coffee and awake again aaargh!

Relax and put your feet up in the garden

Thanks for all the lovely stories and reassurance. I think he’s definetly got a different personality to his big sister. She’s always been very wakeful and startled at everything from the second she was out!

It’s the most interesting thing about having more than 1 child the differences in siblings is incredible really Grin

Absolutely no need to worry if they are gaining weight and seeing and pooing plenty.

I am jealous though, I have a 12 day old who won't sleep more than an hour at a time. He wouldn't go in his crib without screaming till 4-30 this morning. I would love a few hours sleep! Grin

My first born was like this, even on his very first day he had a 4 hour pattern, which just got longer as he got older. Super easy! He's 18 now and sleep has never been an issue for him (he is a big gamer and still knocked off at a sensible hour and told his friends they should too the weirdo Grin) So my dd was a total shock to us as she cluster fed and struggled to sleep pretty much from the get go, needed walking around or jiggling for hours before she'd relax. She also almost grown up and sleeping is still a problem for her. To balance it out although she was a very difficult baby she has been delightful ever since, where ds had a case of 'the terrible twos' for a very long time.

So relax and enjoy it OP :)

DD did 6 hour stints at night from 3 weeks old, then she also have a long nap during the day. She was a dream baby.

sola my first was just like that. Needed walking round to settle and barely slept for more than an hour or two. That’s why this feels a bit strange. I’m going to love seeing how they grow and how the little one is going to develop his own personality.

Yy pp, my two were like this & woke like clockwork after four hours.
Enjoy & relax in the knowledge you have a contented healthy baby.
Congratulations.

My second was like that. I took him to the doctors because I was so worried (after my first who was not like it at all!).

He started sleeping through (7-7) at 9 weeks and never stopped. Always happy, even if he didn't nap, he's just an unbelievably 'easy' child even now.

(I'm aware this might sound smug but definitely am not. My eldest is nothing like this sleep wise even now!)
