AIBU to let 6 month old watch tv

AIBU letting my 6mo watch kids tv whilst I tidy up and make a cuppa? Feel guilty, not sure if I should, but means I get ten mins to myself to get sorted a bit!

Don't worry! This is fine. Enjoy your precious quiet time.

qwertyuiopy · 17/04/2018 15:56

How much can you do in 10 minutes? Hmm

It's up to you what you do re TV. Personally I didn't and truly believe it makes a difference.

whoopsiedaisies · 17/04/2018 15:57

Make a cuppa, stick a wash on, check my emails!

AgnesBrownsCat · 17/04/2018 15:58

It’s fine . Give yourself a break . Bollocks does it make a difference 😂. Difference in what way exactly ?

fuzzyfozzy · 17/04/2018 15:58

The problem is that our TVs refresh so much quicker than old TVs. So baby eyes and brains can't keep up.

Katurah · 17/04/2018 16:01

Difference how?! My 8 month old loves baby Einstein and giggles at the puppets. What damage am I doing exactly?!

Katurah · 17/04/2018 16:01

Go for it OP! Ignore the haterz and enjoy your cuppa! X

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 17/04/2018 16:02

It’s absolutely fine. Don’t beat yourself up about it and enjoy your break.
Ignore the ‘perfect parents’ that will tell you that you should be interacting with your child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ....do what you need to do to keep sane

Meepmoop · 17/04/2018 16:03

I do it, I put on YouTube baby songs while I cook tea etc. Baby shark is a favourite

Mathmatical · 17/04/2018 16:03

Oh god. Must be terrible parent over here. At least 3 episodes of hey duggee watched per day in this household! It's the only time she's still.

Handsfull13 · 17/04/2018 16:04

I was definitely using the tv when my twins were 6 months. It's not like you've said you were planning on having it all day, everyday.
I've found it helps now mine are a year old as I can pop it on, they get engrossed and I can quickly make a drink/put on wash/ go for a wee without worrying they are going to climb everywhere and hurt themselves.
Try it for a little while and if it doesn't feel right then you'll have to find something else.

Crispbutty · 17/04/2018 16:04

“It's up to you what you do re TV. Personally I didn't and truly believe it makes a difference.”

A difference to what? Confused

“The problem is that our TVs refresh so much quicker than old TVs. So baby eyes and brains can't keep up.”

Surely that would depend on the programme.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/04/2018 16:08

Ignore the haterz

Hmm
Babyplaymat · 17/04/2018 16:08

I tend to broadly agree with the States' recommendation about avoiding before 2. But equally, 10 mins a day is unlikely to cause a problem. That said, I must be doing parenting wrong because am on #3 now, currently 6 months old and find this the easiest age to get stuff done around. The older the harder in my book!

#1 child didn't watch any until #2 came along when she was around 2. #2 saw the odd bit when she did.

Idontdowindows · 17/04/2018 16:09

I parked mine in front of the aquarium. In the end, it's the same difference I'm sure. :)

Mamabear1475 · 17/04/2018 16:10

My daughter loves in the night garden. I always put it on when I need to get stuff done. She is 7 months. I don't care what people say. I would rather distract her for a bit then live in a tip

MarcellaBackland · 17/04/2018 16:13

I’m not a hater, I get that you need some time. But surely making a drink, putting on laundry, and reading emails is going to end up taking a bit more than 10 min. It’s sucg a slippery slope. I don’t judge you for using TV but I avoided it before 2 for both of mine. They never knew it existed so it wasn’t that hard. But if they were particularly high needs abd didn’t nap and that was the only way I could get a moment I probably would have.

MarcellaBackland · 17/04/2018 16:13

And sadly it’s not the same as an aquarium :(. There’s tons of research out there about this if you do a quick Google.

My son was crawling at 6 months - Mr Tumble was the only way for him to happily be in the cot while I had a shower/tried to look vaguely human.

OP unless you are parking her in front of the tv for hours on end - YANBU.

AfricanPlume · 17/04/2018 16:19

This is what the research says.

ethelfleda · 17/04/2018 16:24

YANBU of course !

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 17/04/2018 16:29

Can a 6 month old watch TV?

Misses point

EmmaJR1 · 17/04/2018 16:30

God I'm awful, especially on teething days. The ONLY way I get a hot drink and a shower is with the help of Mr Tumble and Hey Duggee. DS is 11 months and VERY vocal when he wants something!

FrenchJunebug · 17/04/2018 16:32

of course you can but make sure there are no adverts (i.e. cbbc)

Crispbutty · 17/04/2018 16:48

“of course you can but make sure there are no adverts (i.e. cbbc)”

Again .. he’s 6 months old! What difference will it make?
