To think a lot of people dont actually wash fruit?

Or are me and 90% of my colleagues gross?

Got some strawberries, blueberries and grapes on my break earlier and just plonked the punnets on my desk and told my workmates to help themselves.. a few people dive in, a quick thanks and back to work.

One colleague just made the monster of all fusses over the fact that ive not washed all said fruit and put into bowls and i quote "its absolutely barbaric that youre expecting people to eat right from the punnet they came in".

Maybe i should wash the fruit.. or maybe if you want to dig into my fruit you can wash it yourself?

I have one of those little veg scrubbing brushes.I use them on potatoes and carrots mostly instead of peeling.I check spinach packets now as have been caught out making a batch of veg lasagnes that were gritty, still ate them.

Lethaldrizzle · 17/04/2018 15:16

I don't wash lots of things including veg. Used to drive dh mad but now he's got used to it

ChasedByBees · 17/04/2018 15:16

What a rude response to a nice gesture! She could have washed it herself or just not had any.

Personally I wash fruit but I’m not sure that’s the point.

Kewcumber · 17/04/2018 15:17

I rinse - and yes it does wash most of the stuff you don't want on the fruit and using soap doesn;t work but a quick rub under a running tap does.

Having said that I am quite capable of washing my own fruit - I don;t expect someone else to wash it for me.

Some doctors think raw mushrooms are bad for us:

I always wash fruit and I don't believe that I'm being over zealous. I think it says in the small print to do so. As I'm the co-operative type I tend to be obedient. However it looks like we're in the minority.

AjasLipstick · 17/04/2018 15:28

Oh God I wash it all! Filthy fingers have picked that fruit.

NauticalDisaster · 17/04/2018 15:29

I never thought fruitwashing would be controversial!

I always wash my fruit and veg but wouldnever expect my colleague to do it for me. And I don’t care whether someone washes the fruit they are going to eat.

onalongsabbatical · 17/04/2018 15:31

I saw a documentary in which fruit-pickers freely admitted shitting in the fields wiping their arses and then continuing to work without washing. How would you know if your norovirus came from the apple you ate yesterday? You wouldn't. But to assume that fruit and veg doesn't need washing seems bloody crazy to me.

macnab · 17/04/2018 15:39

But surely to get rid of norovirus or any other dangerous virus or chemicals etc you'd need a lot more than just water?! So how do you clean fruit? With an anti-bag spray??

Luxembourgmama · 17/04/2018 15:39

I never wash fruit. Couldn't be arsed

Luxembourgmama · 17/04/2018 15:39

I thought i was a gross minority. Relieved there are others.

Glumglowworm · 17/04/2018 15:41

I do at home but I don’t if I’m somewhere it’s not practical to do so

Unless she were forcing your fruit down her throat, SIBU to do more than say “no thanks”

Drainedandconfused · 17/04/2018 15:41

I always wash fruit and veg, as above poster said field workers crap in fields and then pick veg, I couldn't eat an unwashed apple, I would be imagining germs crawling all over it and then multiplying in my belly ready to give me the chronic runs at 2am.
Washing fruit and veg doesn't kill germs, it washes them away. When you wash your hands and use soap it's not the soap that kills the germs, it dislodges dirt and germs, the friction of rubbing your hands further dislodges dirt and germs and washes them down the drain. Antibacterial soaps are a waste of money, any liquid soap does the same job. Eating unwashed fruit and veg won't kill you but it could give you a nasty stomach infection, 48 hours of misery that could have been prevented by 2 minutes washing. I'm not a clean freak either.

CarolsSecretCookieRecipe · 17/04/2018 15:42

Blush Non-fruit washer. Surprised there are so many of us

MonkeyPoke · 17/04/2018 15:43

I hate excess water on fruit!

Queenoftheblitz · 17/04/2018 15:45

I wash fruit and polish the apples after. Polishing takes off a grubby greasy layer of something - don't know what it is.

springmachine · 17/04/2018 15:46

Sometimes I rinse , sometimes not.
I usually only rinse if it's looking especially muddy still.

It's horrible to think that there is a chance they've been sneezed or peed on, but a rinse under my two isn't going to get rid of pesticide, bogies or urine so it's not really making much of a difference

AnyFucker · 17/04/2018 15:46

You would only get the fruit "clean" by washing if you used detergent. Rinsing in plain water may get visible soil and larger crawlies off but that's it.

Perhaps put it in the dishwasher next time ?

Ontopofthesunset · 17/04/2018 15:47

Actually a quick rinse does remove a large percentage of bacteria and if you rub the fruit (eg apples, pears) you remove even more. I'm amazed how many people don't wash fruit and veg, but then I'm constantly surprised by the number of people who don't wash their hands after using public loos.

thebear1 · 17/04/2018 15:49

I don't but do for guests. I know fruit should be washed but can't be bothered most of the time.

steff13 · 17/04/2018 15:50

It spoils berries to wash them.

Not if you only wash them immediately before you use them.

Kewcumber · 17/04/2018 15:50

Thank you @Ontopofthesunset I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows this - was beginning to feel a bit lonely.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 17/04/2018 15:51

But to assume that fruit and veg doesn't need washing seems bloody crazy to me.

I tell you what seems crazy - that people buy things like Dettol & other disinfectants when all that's needed is cold water!!

I am amazed people don’t wash fruit. We wash ours with water and baking soda.

It is really dirty not to. I mean, not washing your hands, you might also say you’ve never got sick from not doing that, but how do you know what it is that made you sick?
