To think a lot of people dont actually wash fruit?

Or are me and 90% of my colleagues gross?

Got some strawberries, blueberries and grapes on my break earlier and just plonked the punnets on my desk and told my workmates to help themselves.. a few people dive in, a quick thanks and back to work.

One colleague just made the monster of all fusses over the fact that ive not washed all said fruit and put into bowls and i quote "its absolutely barbaric that youre expecting people to eat right from the punnet they came in".

Maybe i should wash the fruit.. or maybe if you want to dig into my fruit you can wash it yourself?

On the telly once I saw sometime washing veg and they were scrubbing it with a little brush.

That makes more sense than a token rinse. It also looks boring so I stick to a boring token rinse 😀

I don't wash anything I'm going to peel.

dejectedharry · 17/04/2018 14:55

I only wash apples if they have that waxy coating on them other than that I don't wash fruit, far too much effort for me.

KittTheCar · 17/04/2018 14:55

Pointless token rinse, should be.

Is boring as well, mind.

KittTheCar · 17/04/2018 14:56

Oh and also with fruit in the garden we just pick and eat.

boxyfingo · 17/04/2018 14:56

I wash all fruit and veg unless it needs to be peeled.

I don't think you needed to wash the fruit for your colleagues - they could do it themselves if they wanted to.

KittTheCar · 17/04/2018 14:56

UNLESS there is enough to bring indoors, in which case, token rinse.

It's all very logical.

FreshStartToday · 17/04/2018 14:56

My mum was an avid fruit and veg washer. I remember her sending me a newspaper article stating that lettuce should be washed for 20 minutes under freeflowing water, to dispose of chemical residue from pesticides.

Needless to say that I don't! I do wash apples, as I think they taste better washed, and occasionally waggle other fruit and veg under a tap, if I happen to be passing. Another one who is still alive here . . .

UnsuspectedItem · 17/04/2018 14:56

But seriously, those who wash it - why? Running it under a tap will do nothing.

SaucyJane · 17/04/2018 14:57

Nooo, mushroom skin is grim! Ha!

Although I do like raw mushrooms - they are really nice with Caesar salad dressing - and apparently we're not really supposed to eat them raw??

Catspaws · 17/04/2018 14:57

I literally never bother and i'm fine Grin

BrendasUmbrella · 17/04/2018 14:57

There are stories online about people who caught life threatening/lifelong illnesses from unwashed fruit/veg. So I always rinse it. Not that I expect rinsing to wash away some kind of super virus, but it makes me feel happier.

KittTheCar · 17/04/2018 14:57

Habit. Upbringing. That sort of thing really.

Emmasmum2013 · 17/04/2018 14:59

I don't wash mine.. doesn't it normally say on the packaging "washed and ready to eat"?

I'm of the mind that a rinse under the tap is going to make a blind bit of difference to any germs on there. It might get any bits off but its not going to make anything more hygienic.

Slievenamon · 17/04/2018 15:00

There are stories online about people who caught life threatening/lifelong illnesses from unwashed fruit/veg

There are stories online of people who cured cancer with onions and who were abducted by aliens...it doesn't make it true.

donajimena · 17/04/2018 15:00

Never. I do wash vine tomatoes if they smell tomato planty

ToadOfSadness · 17/04/2018 15:01

I wash fruit, sometimes tempted not to but then I think of mouse and other pee, insect eggs and fly poo, chemical sprays, and with apples, the wax they are sprayed with to keep them from going rotten which has sometimes resulted in a whole bag being thrown out because it won't wash off and I can taste and smell it.

Strawberries often seem to acquire sand stuck to them which is not a pleasant thing to crunch on. I am lax with blueberries though but I don't eat those.

missbonita · 17/04/2018 15:01

I do, because I have worked picking fruit.

whats the point of a splash of cold water?
may as well run them through the dishwasher if you're that concerned about catching something

MaiaRindell · 17/04/2018 15:05

Would a quick rinse under the tap be enough to remove germs? Also, berries go all mushy if you wash them.

yumscrumfatbum · 17/04/2018 15:05

My husband has an annoying habit of rubbing apples on his jumper. I confess it is easy for him to annoy me but I fail to see the benefit of adding jumper fluff to your fruit. I do wash grapes because I like them more wet!

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 17/04/2018 15:06

They've been handled by a lot of people between being picked and packaged. Those people could have had rotavirus, norovirus, dirty hands etc. Strawberries are usually grown on manure. All sorts of beetles, larvae, flies etc have landed on them. And then pesticides.

You'd need a steam cleaner to get that lot off Grin - you're the naive one if you think dipping it under the cold tap does a bloody thing!!

mirime · 17/04/2018 15:06

I do wash vine tomatoes if they smell tomato planty

Isn't that the best thing about them? I love that smell.

And somebody said we're not supposed to eat raw mushrooms - why not? I love raw mushrooms as well!

Astrabees · 17/04/2018 15:07

It spoils berries to wash them. I'm afraid I never wash apples or pears either, probably should. I have not had sickness or diarrhoea for over 10 years so maybe I'm immune to the bugs.

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/04/2018 15:11

There is a point in washing raspberries, at least not washing, but leaving them in cold water for a while until all the bugs have drowned and flushed out of the fruit. On the other hand, they're not going to harm you, it's only because you think they might be there that will put you off.
