I know this isn't really an AIBU, but posting here for traffic. I have long dark brown hair that is getting very grey now. What is the best way of disguising this and making regrowth blend in best? My hair is very thick and wavy and not looking great at all at the moment. Advice would really massively appreaciated.

Sounds like we have similar hair. My hairdresser recommended Clairoil root touch up which you can buy in the supermarket. It's been working really well for me.

Uniglo18 · 15/04/2018 19:07

Hairprint is a none toxic natural colour which helps to disguise the greys.

Oh you sound like me. Ive been using darkest brown hair dye since I started greying mid thirties.... I now realise I need to use non permanent warmer lighter tones as the so dark is making me look older. So I'm growing it out eek!!!! and using anti dandruff shampoo to hopefully lift the dark dye. If you havent used dye yet dont fall into the trap I did! Use a decent NON PERMANENT light to mid brown to cover your grey so you don't get an ageing flat look. xx

mimibunz · 15/04/2018 19:08

I’ve been doing highlights every 3 - 4 months to blend in the grey. I love it. The lighter colour freshens up my complexion and I think I look better. It’s expensive but worth it for me.

Shenanagins · 15/04/2018 19:12

I’ve started to lighten my hair as the red-growth was too much. Miss my dark hair 😢

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/04/2018 19:14

I went the non-permanent route - it solved the grey roots problem, everything faded at the same rate.

Itsear · 15/04/2018 19:15

I have been told to go lighter as I get older (now 40s) but I am not sure about it as I have black eyebrows so am holding off for now and sticking with brown......

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 19:18

Hairdresser every 6 weeks is my solution.

It's not just the grey. It's the fact that the bastards change texture and go all wiry and thick!!

washewihersen · 15/04/2018 19:22

I've stopped dyeing mine altogether and got it cut into a bob while I grow out the dye. My dark brown hair actually looks black against my white and grey hairs and I'm going to embrace the monochrome look. The dyed ends have that horrible orangey yellowy tinge which I can't wait to get rid of now. My hairdresser did me some lowlights through the roots so I haven't got an obvious stripe as I grow out the grey. Once I have black, white and grey hair I'm going to also change my makeup and wardrobe. I've got about a year to go til I've grown it all out to bob length but I'm really excited. There are some great pictures on the internet of women with long grey /salt and pepper hair for inspiration.

Middleoftheroad · 15/04/2018 19:23

Hairdresser went a little crazy and stripey this time but I go for base brown and highlights. Works out a tenner a week roughly.

In between I use spray colour as greys/whites appear fortnightly.

I find just brown flat and draining on me and blonde masks greys. Again, it's too blonde this time but you can see the idea.

Same problem here with white hairs. I've been having dark blonde highlights through the top (officially it's called a tint, I think).

It does disguise the whites. When all my hair was dark, it was hard to stop them showing unless I dyed the roots every 2-3 weeks.

Do what I've done, and embrace it!

Middleoftheroad · 15/04/2018 19:26

I either just get T-section or top section. I also had it blonde all over - nightmare!

welshmist · 15/04/2018 19:28

Same as middle of the road for a couple of years now. I only have grey at the front for some weird reason started with my pregnancies. It works beautifully and is better for your complexion looks wise.

imnotinterestedthanks · 15/04/2018 19:37

Brilliant advice thanks. I was thinking of getting highlights and definitely will now. Should I go for a half head of t zone? I'm 45 and pretty grey now especially a massive patch at the front of my hair right in the middle of my forehead!

Sorry or a t zone.

mine is purple. sorts it out fairly easily!

Middleoftheroad · 15/04/2018 20:40

I'm 45 soon and got my first greys at 19. By 30 I was doing the old highlights and dye regularly.

I normally do just a T-section to cover the roots/fringe and frame my face with colour. When I've used box dyes (medium brown) the result was flat and ageing.

T- section cheaper. I pay £55 for cut and base colour roots or £65 for cut, base colout and highlights.

Previously it went into £100 plus a time and it was ridiculous so I found a local salon that was better.

I went 12 weeks recently. It was too long but the spray on roots kept me going. But don't pay a tenner in Boots. Do you have a Home Bargains? I pay £1.99 and it's just as good. I also have a powder one.

Middleoftheroad · 15/04/2018 20:42

This is dark brown (as mine's just been dyed) but I have medium brown for later in the month when it lightens up.

I'd have sone highlights in a warm caramel and a few lowlights in your natural colour. Going for a lighter colour is generally a good look as we age.

NathusiusPip · 15/04/2018 20:56

If you can be arsed with the massive faff, then henna gives it an amazing depth of colour and shine, and the grey/ white hairs take on the most vibrant colour, so you get bright auburn highlights.

ToastyFingers · 15/04/2018 21:39

I'm 27 and greying and I'm trying to embrace it. I dye my hair occasionally as its been bleached previously and gets a bit stripy after a while but I'm not going to damage my hair by trying to hide the greys. Maybe invest in some good treatments to get your hair looking shiny and healthy instead of trying to cover it up. I like Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer, it makes my hair look full and healthy, greys and all.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/04/2018 21:42

I’m dark brown with ample grey - now doing lighter brown base with blonde bits - every 8 week’s at the hairdresser

@ghostyslovesheets

Looks fab.
I'm not embracing middle age gracefully so I have very short, dusky pink hair. Not a sign of grey because no one has sen my natural hair colour for 30 years 😃
