To ask here what to do with my greying dark brown hair?

I know this isn't really an AIBU, but posting here for traffic. I have long dark brown hair that is getting very grey now. What is the best way of disguising this and making regrowth blend in best? My hair is very thick and wavy and not looking great at all at the moment. Advice would really massively appreaciated.

ohhh I bet that look ace x

I'm 48 and resisting the grey for a while yet!

If you have dark hair with lots of greys, will using a light coloured dye (e.g. peach or pink) dye just the grey hairs?

SunwheretheFareyou · 16/04/2018 00:18

Claroil roof touch up here too £5 very quick it's good not to have solid colour

Baubletrouble43 · 17/04/2018 11:53

Ghosty that looks fab. That's what I'm aiming for long term

hellsbellsmelons · 17/04/2018 12:01

I was dark brown.
With very thick curly hair.
I've been blonde for years now.
It was the only way to go.
But I am literally 90+% grey!!!
So you don't see any dark roots. It's all grey so blends better with blonde.

AGreatBigPonk · 17/04/2018 12:08

Watching with interest. For those that opted for highlights, how do you stop that brassy/ orange look? I must have red undertones as it never goes blonde but yucky orange!

I've just stripped out the dark brown home dye that I've been using for ages using a L'oreal sachet of stuff. It was a scary, yukky job and my hair did go orange in places - ferret orange - and quite dry. My hair is thinning in places and I felt that the dark tones really highlighted that. Also I am greying and my roots are a 3 week headache.

My plan was to switch to a much, much lighter golden brown using a demi permanent. The result was carrot orange roots and dark ends. I tried another twice to dye it with a demi permanent but the orange persisted. In the end I have had to use a permanent medium ash brown and finally it is a uniform, lighter brown, though not the golden shade I had hoped for.

I want to use the demi colours but feel that after two weeks they have washed out. My MIL who is a hairdresser says that you can use them as many times as you like with no worry about damage but I'm not so sure.

Also, the spray root touch ups, how does that work? Do they stain your bedding?

To clarify, the stripper didn't make my hair fall out, it was falling out before!

TransVisionTerf · 17/04/2018 12:36

What about a wash in wash out?mind you I can never find them, everything seems to be permanent or involves stacks of ammonia

Baubletrouble43 · 17/04/2018 15:16

Oh bastardly that's what I'm scared of.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 17/04/2018 15:25

I've gone for shine as I cannot stand the badger stripe Inthe parting and cannot justify spending £s in hairdressers.

Knowivedonewrong · 17/04/2018 15:28

Bauble The colour stripper or remover won't make your hair fall out.

MorningsEleven · 17/04/2018 15:47

If I was getting a colour stripped I'd get it done professionally.

The key to getting rid of brassiness is to use a decent toner

starkid · 17/04/2018 15:51

This is me (minus thick and wavy, lucky you!)
I've been using a semi permanent L'oreal box dye in a similar brown to my natural colour, and when I can't be bothered to dye it, been using the L'oreal magic retouch brown hair spray stuff. You can mostly only see my greys when it's up, so I put it in a ponytail then just spray the top of my head lightly and it does the job.

I'm planning on cutting my hair short soon though and changing the colour up to maybe a nice caramel colour, or just playing around with random box dyes while my hair is short and easy to grow out and cut off again!
