Hoop earrings

So. I have a medium sized pair of gold hooped earrings. I haven't worn them for years, probably about 15-20. I'm not sure why exactly but I wonder if I wear them now, I might look, for want of a better word, "chavvy"? I'm early 40s, am I too "old" to wear these in any case?? Thoughts please?

What is 'medium' ?

ObiJuanKenobi · 14/04/2018 22:50

The bigger the hoop, the bigger the hoe Wink

No, I'm joking. I often wear big hoops with my hair scraped back and a leather jacket and jeans with boots. Love them!

pandarific · 14/04/2018 22:52

If they’re 15 years old, they may look a little dated unless they are very slimline and fine, which is the look right now seems to be.

Maybe It also depends on your overall look - how would you describe how you dress, style of hair, makeup etc?

pandarific · 14/04/2018 22:56

Oliver bonas has some nice hoop earrings by the way! Ones like those?

DoctorWhatTheFuck · 14/04/2018 22:57

In ancient times both America and elsewhere, slaves would have a hoop earring, through which would run a rope or chain. To run away is to rip off your ear. A person with a ripped ear suffers the fate of a caught runaway slave. It’s similar to how pigs or bulls are led with a rope through the nose - not to comply causes pain.

For some there are still subliminal associations with slavery/‘underclasses’.

WeirdyMcBeardy · 14/04/2018 22:59

I wear a few pairs of hoop earrings. Don't give a stuff what others think. They definitely aren't chavvy. They are quite small. What's medium? I think it also depends what your look is generally. Tracksuit with hoops earrings = chavvy. If you generally look respectable, you will be fine.

Fifilafrog · 14/04/2018 22:59

They are fine, about the size of a 50p, no pattern just plain. I'm not big into fashion and would describe my overall "style", if you can call it that, as classic. I sometimes get told that I have an air of Audrey Hepburn?! Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. I like her but it's not very now is it?! 😂

Depends on the style.

Some style hoops do look chavvy/dated/ rubbish/all 3.
Others can look lovely.

It's style dependent.

(I also quite like hoops)

Lotsofsausage · 14/04/2018 23:04

I wear hoops. Some medium thicker ones and some thin large ones. I’m definitely not a chav.
Look at stacey dooley’s Insta- she wears gold hoops and dresses very androgynous/ cos style, it works well.

Grilledaubergines · 14/04/2018 23:05

As long as they’re not creole style, you’re fine!

That said, have the confidence to wear what you like and when you like without worrying if they’re ‘on trend’ or have associations l.

esk1mo · 14/04/2018 23:09

i LOVE big gold hoop earrings Grin although im in my 20s..

size of a 50p sounds small though, not chavvy at all

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 14/04/2018 23:10

What's Creole style?

BitOutOfPractice · 14/04/2018 23:10

If someone ever told me I had an air of Audrey Hepburn about me I would be utterly utterly thrilled. So I'd say that you are doing something right

Grilledaubergines · 14/04/2018 23:12

These type are creole. Very popular on the 80s.

Apologies if others like.

Hoop earrings
BringMeCoffeePlease · 14/04/2018 23:13

NOoooo, hoop earrings are not ‘chavvy’ anymore. They’re fashionable. Wear those hoops girl.

notangelinajolie · 14/04/2018 23:15

Very Cheshire housewives. DD2 23 wears them. We live in Cheshire - she told me she is looking for a footballer Confused

Knittedfairies · 14/04/2018 23:16

50p piece size isn’t very big; I was thinking medium might be the size swing a budgie might have in its cage. Wear your hoops with enjoyment.

LunchBoxPolice · 14/04/2018 23:16

You can't be too old for earrings. If you like them, wear them.

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 14/04/2018 23:17

Alriiiight. Shock

So, I agree with the advice to not get Creole earrings!!!

thecatfromjapan · 14/04/2018 23:18

I love that Creole style. I've just bought something similar from 'AndOtherStories'. Smile

I'm not cool enough to be rocking anything other than a boring, respectable look. Sad

OP - Wear them. Hoops are great. It's true that very fine, slimline jewellery is the style at the moment but hoops are very flattering.

Grilledaubergines · 14/04/2018 23:21

thecat

I’m so so sorry for slating your choice Confused

I do love a hoop but I’m quite conservative I think so tend to wear very plain silver ones.

thecatfromjapan · 14/04/2018 23:25

Don't worry Grilled, 'Stule and Beauty' is delightful precisely because people give differing opinions without malice (usually).

And I have to admit, you've made me feel a bit 'edgy' now - which is such a rare feeling, I'm positively gleaming and gloating. Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/04/2018 23:26

I love hoops , cannot wear them at work though.
I have tiny thin ones you could fit over the end of your pinkie just.
Bit of a fiddle to get in but definately not chavy.

The ones that could fit over your clenched fist OTOH are Grin (and I live , very happily, in Essex)

MissMarplesKnitting · 14/04/2018 23:27

I bought some very pretty tiny ones.jidt big enough to loop under my lobe

Cannot for love nor money do the 'catch' bit on them.

I am v peeved about this.

Wear the earrings if you like them!!!

Lockheart · 14/04/2018 23:31

I wear them and would say definitely not chavvy! I have a pixie hair cut so I wear a lot of big earrings which I can show off :) though if you have very long hair you may find they catch or tangle if you’re wearing your hair down.
