Taking holiday leave when DC have gone back to school

AIBU to think it's a strange thing to do?
A few friends/ relatives do this. They ask for childcare from other relatives/friends or use clubs etc. during the school holidays and then book leave when their DC have gone back to school.
One friend has used me for childcare for 4 days this Easter & relatives the rest of the time (6 days) They can take leave when they like and have booked a week off starting next Monday. Just as DC's holiday ends.
AIBU to think Hmm.

Why do it if you resent it?

Mrscog · 14/04/2018 21:16

A bit strange for a whole week I agree. I do take a few annual leave days when DCs at school though for sanity - maybe 2-3 per year.

snewname · 14/04/2018 21:17

I'd certainly stop doing them a favour. Poor kids Shock

BewareOfDragons · 14/04/2018 21:17

Don't offer to watch their children again unless they pay you up front. Value yourself.

I had no idea friend was taking next week off! Found out last night when she posted on FB that her holiday had now begun! Shock

Wow. Most of us have to use our leave up in the school holidays and then figure out how to cover the rest of the time schools are closed. Very cheeky...not cool at all.

CFs

NewYearNewMe18 · 14/04/2018 21:24

Perfectly normal - I have holiday or rest ad recuperation. my holiday was not spent chasing my arse and running ragged after some short people. I also use my leave entitlement for hospital and dental appointments, and getting my hair done . I had a perfectly capable and paid in advance for childminder.

InspMorse · 14/04/2018 21:25

Sheldon
That's what I thought too! I thought I was picking up the days not covered by her statutory leave - I work term time only!

If using holiday clubs it doesn't make any odds to you.
But when using family when able to take holidays it's odd.
Before my MIL died she asked to look after the eldest during the holidays, she enjoyed planning their outings and it was their special time.

In one of the teams i worked in, we could only have 2 people off at a time. So we had to share out the school holidays and it just wasn't possible to always have them all off. But it would always be busy so you would be ready for a break the following week when you could have time.

And honestly, I quite like a break when the children are at school. I can get lots of household chores done and have some lazy days of peace and quiet.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 14/04/2018 21:27

Sorry I got failure notice.

Mammalamb · 14/04/2018 21:27

I’ve added one day onto my holiday so that I get a day for myself. But ds is in nursery and we have spent the last 10 days together so I’m sure he’ll be fine. But I can see why you’re annoyed. I had a friend who used to ask me to take time off or dh to watch her kids during the school holidays, but she and her husband would take their time off at a different time so that she got some time to herself. I did it once and next time I said no.

InspMorse · 14/04/2018 21:31

Yes, I think that's the case in a lot of places.Only a few can have the school holidays. This friend works with older women, apparently none of them take school hols as leave as it's cheaper to book flights etc. at other times.

I have two weeks off in summer holidays and most of Christmas off. With other staff holidays I can’t take much more during school holidays so I’ll be left with days to take in the term time. I’d rather have them all in the school holidays but that isn’t fair on other staff and would mean too much time off in a condensed period.

InspMorse · 14/04/2018 21:35

Fisson Nope!!
I've decided I'm unavailable this summer!

I live on the boarder of 2 counties and just 2 miles down the road all the schools are a different half term to us. My teacher friend works in one county and her kids go to school in the other - they very rarely get the same weeks off

Spamalotta · 14/04/2018 21:37

I don't understand it at all. My DD2 is in nursery which is paid for all year round, but if I'm off work she doesn't go. As I'm a teacher that means we're paying for roughly 12 weeks that we don't use per year but I couldn't care less. My time with my daughter is precious to me.

InspMorse · 14/04/2018 21:37

Salty Can you spread the other days to cover some of Feb/May/Oct hols or are people fighting for those weeks at your place? I know it happens.
