Taking holiday leave when DC have gone back to school

AIBU to think it's a strange thing to do?
A few friends/ relatives do this. They ask for childcare from other relatives/friends or use clubs etc. during the school holidays and then book leave when their DC have gone back to school.
One friend has used me for childcare for 4 days this Easter & relatives the rest of the time (6 days) They can take leave when they like and have booked a week off starting next Monday. Just as DC's holiday ends.
AIBU to think Hmm.

Not all workplaces will let you take time off over the school holidays if there are lots of parents all fighting over the same 2 weeks off.

That's weird and cheeky to boot.

Why have children if you don't want to spend time with them? I appreciate that not all parents can get to take all their leave during school holidays but you would if you could.

Mine are almost 18 and 17 and DH and I still prioritise taking our holidays off with them. Isn't that normal? My DSs had to spend half their summer holidays in Out of School Care - they did really enjoy it but I still felt guilt. DH gets more holidays than me even when I buy more but he takes the vast majority of his holidays when they are off even if I can't get off. he occasionally has days that he has to use when he can't get any more school holiday days.

In my workplace we get 7 weeks a/l but there is huge competition for the school holiday weeks, in a large team only 2 or 3 of us allowed any single week off...and so it means when my little one starts school I will be lucky to get more than 3 weeks off in the holidays...so most would be in term time....could this be a case with some of the people doing this? Xxx

Ialso use my leave entitlement for hospital and dental appointments

God I don’t ! That’s a later start or earlier end for me . I do a lot of unpaid Overtime though

I think there has to be a balance between making sure dc are looked after and not taking the p out of family and friends, and taking a few days leave for time to yourself. I wouldn’t book a whole week off though.

Splendid idea if you have the family network and club bookings to accommodate it
