You've spent the night in hospital with a loved one you were very close to, you were there with them when they passed, they've only been ill a few days and it's totally unexpected, up until yesterday afternoon you thought they were getting better.
You ring your oh and he answers with "is he dead now then?"

Dear lord, I’m hoping it was the shock that made your Oh say that.

Flowers OP, look after yourself.

Is this the Partner that you had previously split from?

See if he gets any more supportive, but if not, perhaps you need to reconsider things.

Written down like that, obviously it does sound horrible, but don't get hung up on words. Particularly when he gets a phone call about an unexpected death. People are shocked, and say the weirdest things. Not all people are wordsmiths Some people struggle to know what to say, even when they've had time to think.
Focus on your own grief and all the practicalities of what have to be done.

It sounds like the sort of thing I'd say tbh. I wouldn't mean any malice, I'm just socially awkward in uncomfortable situations like that. Things that require a sympathetic response make me panic and potentially blurt out something inappropriate

OP I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you have good supportive people around you. Look after yourself...sending you hugs Thanks
