To grow out my grey in early 30s?

I’m in my early 30s and have been getting the odd grey since my teens. Now, I’m probably around 40-60% grey.

It’s very noticeable as the rest of my hair is naturally very dark, almost black. I alternately get roots done at the salon or do them at home of time/money is tight.

I’m sick of it. So, so fucking sick of it. I get my roots done and within 10 days the flecks of grey are coming through. It’s currently been 4 weeks and I have a good 1-2cm (pic attached).

I genuinely cannot face this upkeep for the next 40+ years. I’m very lazy and fairly low-key with beauty, and this is too much hassle.

I’ve floated the idea to a few people who have reacted in sheer horror, saying “no! You’re FAR too young, it’ll age you terribly, you’ll look like an old hag” etc. But I think as long as your skin and face are in good nick, a hair colour won’t age you?

Opinions please!

That escalated quickly.

Oh good Titania, am so glad that we agree white Europeans have not respected local cultures and have killed and plundered . Not to mention mass abduction and slavery , rape and torture . Am glad we agree that white Europeans have fucked countries up. Pretty much fucked up the world in its entirety . Can you see now why some redemption is necessary ?

Since when does any of this have to do with growing out grey hair?

Well I kind of assumed that she'd accidentally posted on the wrong thread.....

I tried growing my dye out a couple of years ago and lasted 3 months - it looked awful. But then my hair is so damaged by dye and heat from driers and straightners that it doesn't look great at the best of times. I wish there was a pain-free way of going grey, if I could wash the colour out overnight I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I love my greying hair! I wasn't looking forward to it, but it actually suits me much better than my natural brown ever did.

I am very lazy about getting haircuts, so my hair length varies from short to medium. I notice that my hair looks much greyer whenever it is longer. So if you want to minimise the grey appearance, you might consider a shorter style.

@TheGrumpySquirrel

I use a mix of Marron and Brun. Also use cling film and leave on for 3 to 4 hours

My natural colour is very dark brown and this makes it a reddy chestnut. You can tweak by adding more of the dif colours.

I grew mine out at 38. Just let it grow, took regular photos so i could see the line creeping down my head Grin took 18 months and that was with bobbed hair.

My hair is 80/85% white with dark undertones. My hairdresser is nothing but positive about it. My hair is very healthy, healthier than it has been since i started dying at 25yo.

I look back at photos of me with my dyed hair and i can see it didn't suit me and looked like a helmet, plus there was, more often than not, the big badger stripe in my parting.

I have not regretted going grey in the 5 years i have been natural.

I have never dyed my grey. I asked my hairdresser if I should start. She said no. She's obviously not in it for the revenue.

I have stockpiled 3 boxes of the age defy stuff on the basis of not reacting to it. But when it's gone I'm going to use semi permanent ones in lighter shades (as long as they don't make me itch) and go lighter gradually.

My sister in law went very white in her 20s after being very dark brunette. She went blonde first, which looked q fake. Now she's completely silver white and gets loads of compliments about her 'highlights' as does another friend of mine who has never chosen to dye her hair.

Being able to say 'I'm allergic to dye' as a sort of excuse is q handy. I know my sister is devoted to dying her hair in a very red/brown colour, which suits her. Her regrowth is v obvious and she then needs to keep on top of it all the time. I love that colour on me, but recognise that it looks very fake!

I coloured my hair at home for years and decided to
grow it out. A trip to the hairdressers made it so much easier , I now have a couple of inches of grey and most days I love it.
