To grow out my grey in early 30s?

AaronPurrSir · 14/04/2018 18:12

I’m in my early 30s and have been getting the odd grey since my teens. Now, I’m probably around 40-60% grey.

It’s very noticeable as the rest of my hair is naturally very dark, almost black. I alternately get roots done at the salon or do them at home of time/money is tight.

I’m sick of it. So, so fucking sick of it. I get my roots done and within 10 days the flecks of grey are coming through. It’s currently been 4 weeks and I have a good 1-2cm (pic attached).

I genuinely cannot face this upkeep for the next 40+ years. I’m very lazy and fairly low-key with beauty, and this is too much hassle.

I’ve floated the idea to a few people who have reacted in sheer horror, saying “no! You’re FAR too young, it’ll age you terribly, you’ll look like an old hag” etc. But I think as long as your skin and face are in good nick, a hair colour won’t age you?

Opinions please!

I have white not grey hair coming in. Pure white. I’m embracing it. I can go pink or lilac in a few years without trashing my hair 😂

Penfold007 · 14/04/2018 22:20

Thanks Benny I am who I am

PickAChew · 14/04/2018 22:25

I had pubey hair before the grey became noticeable, so it's no biggy for me.

Late 50s, got my first gets at 17. Still mostly dark but my salt and pepper is beginning to give way to white streaks.

PickAChew · 14/04/2018 22:26

Late 40s! Though I've been a little achy, lately so feel a decade older.

LeighaJ · 14/04/2018 22:29

It's your hair, if you cba to continue with getting dyed then it doesn't really matter what other people think.

KittyCrackers · 14/04/2018 22:33

Here’s my silver do - four years after cutting it all off into a pixie cut, it’s grown beautifully and looks so much better with my skin tone than the fake dyed look ever did! This pic was taken while getting ready for my sisters wedding - the make up lady did make us look super fab... PS I’m 38 and did the chop at 34 - haven’t regretted it for one day since!

I’m 33 and 5 months into growing out my grey. Naturally I’m an auburn colour but have been blonde highlighting for the last ten years or so. And I’m just tired of it. My hair is shoulder length, I’m goinf to grow my greys to my earlobes and crop of the lengths.
Couldn’t give a sideways fuck if it makes me look ‘old’. I don’t see why old is an issue.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 14/04/2018 22:41

Your hair is lovely kitty!

NameChangeOnTheRegular · 14/04/2018 22:51

Kitty crackers - that really, really suits you!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/04/2018 22:59

Hard to tell as haven’t seen a picture

I have a little grey hair it’s drier that way he rest of my hair semi permanent colour softens the texture for myself it is certainly aging and that bothers me

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/04/2018 23:13

I'm debating whether to take the plunge and go grey. My DH has always encouraged my natural look and always queries why I dye my hair and don't leave it as it is.

Until now I've always much preferred the dyed look. But I'm getting tired of it and my grey is much more now and grows through again quickly.

Also, I've developed an allergy to some of the brands of dye. I didn't notice at first as it doesn't start while the dye is on, but a few hours later or the next night/day I am driven mad with itching.

So I'm now using the Age perfect stuff (or whatever it's called) and I don't react to it yet . I have started to colour it a lighter colour.

Weirdly, the dye doesn't seem to take that well on my grey and it can be seen through the dye in bright light.

So I'm sticking with the dye which seems to be blending in my greys more than covering them completely. I'm going to stick with going lighter and lighter and see how long it takes til I'm brave enough to stop completely.

My problem is that I don't know what my real colour is and how much of my hair is actually grey.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/04/2018 23:24

If chemical dues are an issue, then black walnut infusion is pretty good at blending in greys to dark brown hair. Completely natural too.

PinkCrystal · 15/04/2018 00:14

I use henna on my greys . Early 40s. I don't mind then showing a bit but they aren't even. Once I finish uni (I already feel a bit self conscious being older) then I will grow it out and maybe blend with highlights.

It annoys me women feel they have to look young all the time. Very dark dyed hair can look harsh.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 15/04/2018 01:01

@PinkCrystal what Henna and do you go to a salon? This has been on my list to try but the Lush henna is too faffy (and I'd have to cut off my balayaged ends first so need to grow hair a bit more first)

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 15/04/2018 01:09

Im in my 30's have like a medium brown hair and kept noticing random almost snow white/grey hair single strands of hair...I got fed up of it so to disguise it I had a few blonde highlights put in...now any grey/white streaks just look like the highlights, you could try doing that to disguise it

Serena1985 · 15/04/2018 01:11

Nah. I know a woman who did this. Embraced her inner OAP at the age of 48. I’m not joking. People thought she was in her 70s.

Serena1985 · 15/04/2018 01:12

It looked nothing like Kitty, who looks amazing but let’s face it the majority of us ain’t going to look like that.

PinkCrystal · 15/04/2018 01:43

I use Lush henna. It is a faf but you get used to it. Doesnt take me long now at all. I usually grate it and mix with hot water then it doesn't make so much mess.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 15/04/2018 02:19

Thanks- do you use Marron? What's your natural colour?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/04/2018 02:24

I quite fancy doing it too, then going lilac or pale blue or something...

Wat3rfestival · 15/04/2018 06:01

I started going grey in my 20s. I am now completely white/grey. I've received horrible comments and some people think that I am 20+ years older. Men don't seem to get the pressure to dye. I an happy and I don't give a xxxx what other people think. Personally, I think dyed hair looks horrible, especially people over a certain age where it is really obvious. I spend the money saved on other things. My tip is that you need to be a bit brave. My family and friends love me for who I am, not what I look like

Henrysmycat · 15/04/2018 06:20

My issue with my white hair is when they are rough and look like a cross between pubes and witches’ hair. It made look older and unkept whatever I did. I’ll decided to revisit the decision in my 60’s. I’m 43 now.
If your texture is good and you can keep it looking pristine then go for it. I couldn’t.

TheHulksPurplePants · 15/04/2018 06:32

I'm 37 and finally cut out the last of my blonde highlights. Considering I started finding my first grey hairs when I was 16 I was surprised to find I wasn't as grey as I thought. The grey I have looks like natural platinum highlights and I've gotten loads of compliments and I keep getting asked who does my highlights Grin. I think we're lucky that grey and pastels are in style, so do it!

I’ve only just started getting a few greys but it’s on my mind a lot as, like you, I have very dark hair. I actually think the one month re-growth of grey you see on a lot of people looks way worse than fully grey, and this scares me a bit.
I think you could grow it out but it would take some styling. You’d need to find a cut that really works for you. Also bleach some of it I think and even dye some of it grey because you don’t want to be grey up to your ears and then dark for 6 inches below. I grew out highlights that way and it was a bit of a disaster.
