Oh crap.

There would be no point putting it to a parliamentary vote because Corbin & his cronies would vote against anything that TM / the Conservatives proposed just for the sake of it. Not because they honestly believe it was the wrong thing to do but because they have to be childish and make everything about Conservative v Labour.
It's about time Labour got themselves a real leader, got rid of the dross and started to work WITH the Conservatives for the good of the country that they're supposed to represent. (Won't happen though)

zen1 · 14/04/2018 10:22

With those two respective egos in charge of Russia and the U.S, I can’t imagine that the whole thing won’t escalate. Maybe it will all play out in Syria (circa Vietnam), maybe it will spread over a wider area.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/04/2018 10:22

Corbyn could come across putin in the street hunched over a dead body, bloody dagger in hand, and still find a way to blame the west/ the tories etc etc

BexConnor · 14/04/2018 10:27

The thing that worries me is that if Assad is gone then somebody even worse will take over.

While this is always a possibility, it's not a good reason to do nothing. It's like saying Hitler should have been left to do whatever he liked just in case another Hitler came along after him.

While I sincerely wish there was an alternative (as I'm sure we all do), at the same time I'm glad action has been taken against Assad. Intervention was well overdue.

CallarMorvern · 14/04/2018 10:27

Callar - do you get all your best links from Russia today...?

Lol, OK not the most unbiased view, but I said interesting... I do worry about some of the points raised in that article (Jaysh al-Islam etc) and think the info we receive here is unreliable too.

Megs4x3 · 14/04/2018 10:36

The biggest pretence is to pretend that this isn’t all about the control of resources. France has recently given the go-ahead for drilling for oil and gas in French-controlled Syria.

We’ve set ourselves up as global police, create refugees and then refuse to help the problem we’ve created. Nice. It would be good if we gave a moments thought to who we want in Syria if not Assad. Look what happened in Iraq when the absence of Saddam Hussein created a vacuum? And why is this whole issue not being debated properly? The boys have toys and they want to play tough guys! It’s terrifying.

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 10:38

We only need to worry because social media and international travel has brought lone wolf attackers to our shores.

We'll still be raking in the ££ from conflict as we always do. All those lovely contracts after the fighting has died down, we'll quids in.

If only it weren't for those pesky lone wolfs - the only fly in the ointment.

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 10:38

Wolves

JessicaJonesJacket · 14/04/2018 10:40

If the strike was successful, all we have done is leave the weapons' inspectors (who were arriving today) with ruins to shift through instead of facilities that could have proved exactly what has been happening.

This isn't about human rights. Look at our trade with Saudi, Assad (in the past). Look at what's happening and has happened in Palestine, Darfur, etc. It's verging on stupidity rather than naivety to think our government cares about protecting innocent people in other countries.

Tantrumschmantrum · 14/04/2018 10:43

Does a real leader declare war then Hmm a real leader finds a diplomatic peaceful solution

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 10:45

Trump who won't change gun laws that result in the deaths of countless US children, is suddenly concerned for the fate of Syrian children Hmm

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/04/2018 10:48

Jessica

No - what we have done is take one of his nastier toys away

Your almost total cynicism is wrong per se but it does risk you knowing ‘the cost of everything but the value of nothing’

These limited strikes were the right thing to do

cardibach · 14/04/2018 10:48

It's about time Labour got themselves a real leader, got rid of the dross and started to work WITH the Conservatives for the good of the country that they're supposed to represent
And how does that work when they fundamentally disagree that the things the Tories are doing are in the best interests of the country? And they’re right.

Bellatron · 14/04/2018 10:49

I support the strike.

TM & her cabinet did not need parliamentary approval to take action, and they've acted appropriately.

Parliament can now get on with their job of holding her to account wrt her decision.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/04/2018 10:50

Cardibach

Labour are a joke

Hope that helps clarify things :)

JessicaJonesJacket · 14/04/2018 10:54

Heyduggee have you been in war zones? I have. Have you sat with people who have lost their homes and families in areas where Britain could have intervened but chose not to? I have. Do you know people living and working in Syria? I do - and none of them think this is either effective or sensible.

Justanotherlurker · 14/04/2018 10:58

I do - and none of them think this is either effective or sensible.

They weren't impressed with Chemical weapons being used as well, and if you know so much you would have knowledge that weapons inspectors will be testing the area it was used, the factories would have been long evacuated before they even got there, just like they was last night.

What is your enlightened solution then?

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/04/2018 11:01

Jessica

If you must insist on a vulgar show of who knows best....

I have served 18 years in the armed forces. I have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Denying Assad his chemical weapons is a rational thing to do

WrongOnTheInternet · 14/04/2018 11:01

It's difficult isn't it. No one likes war, but you need the front to hold law behind it. If they've verified the origin of the chemical attacks. If. I'm concerned about the Skripral business too. If Russia is acting defensively in Syria, so are we.

Butterymuffin · 14/04/2018 11:04

I don't think May has the right to do this without putting it to a parliamentary vote

You can think that all you like, but she does. She is PM and it's her call, on advice from her cabinet. I don't support the Tories but this is a course of action they can choose to take.

JessicaJonesJacket · 14/04/2018 11:12

HeyDuggee thank you for your service. Flowers
I disagree that deciding to launch air strikes without international support and without recalling parliament was the right decision.

Cobblersandhogwash · 14/04/2018 11:13

I hope what they find backs up the strikes. Fancy waiting for evidence.

And the missiles have been launched ..
Justanotherlurker · 14/04/2018 11:21

I disagree that deciding to launch air strikes without international support and without recalling parliament was the right decision.

Who has condemned the attacks internationally?

Apart from Corbyn who can hide behind Security Council and UN, as he conveniently ignores that any attempt through them would be vetoed by Russia.

Should we just scrap the Geneva convention?

scaryteacher · 14/04/2018 11:27

The NATO Sec Gen agreed with the strikes. That is a large international membership of NATO nations and partner countries.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 14/04/2018 11:39

Jessica - thank you :)

We can agree to disagree :)
