To be annoyed that we are not even getting a paid day off work for Royal wedding?

I am not a Royalist. Taxpayers money is being used to provide security. And to top it all off, we are not even getting a paid day off work for it. At least with other big Royal weddings we had a day off to enjoy.

My DP is self employed, and I still think we should have got a day off

The glaring difference is that one is 2nd in line to be the King (hopefully, for his sake, not for a very long time yet) whilst the other is not...well, not realistically unless there’s an incredibly sad event with William & all 3 of his children.

Bluelady · 12/04/2018 13:21

The only Royal wedding I can ever remember getting a day off for was William's. A lot of employers didn't honour that and made people take a day's holiday. Excellent point pp made about the cost of policing football matches, what's the difference?

Skiiltan · 12/04/2018 13:22

thedevilinablackdress - And if we're getting annoyed about taxpayer's £ being used to police public events I think we should start with football matches that are on every week all over the county for a l large part of the year.

The football clubs have to pay for policing. That's one of the reasons why ticket prices are so high. It's also why there's a minor crisis whenever a football club goes bankrupt, as the local police force is always one of its major creditors.

crunchymint · 12/04/2018 13:22

I thought clubs now had to pay for policing football matches?

"I thought clubs now had to pay for policing football matches?"

Nope.

It costs Londoners about £12m per season for premier league matches. Only about half of that isnever recovered from clubs.

I'm pretty sure if he's self-employed he could take the day off.

StormcloakNord · 12/04/2018 13:28

Count yourself lucky you got ANY bank holidays.

My boss is extremely anti-royalist so while everyone else was off we were made to come into work.

While a day off would have been excellent, meh, I don't like the royals that much either.

MrsHathaway · 12/04/2018 13:28

Before my time, but Charles and Diana got a public holiday even though it was a Wednesday so didn't make a nice long boozy weekend.

frankchickens · 12/04/2018 13:30

YABVVVU Who the flip do you think pays for the "paid" day off?

TheJoyOfSox · 12/04/2018 13:32

Then book a day off from work, use one of your paid holidays.

PlumsGalore · 12/04/2018 13:32

Edward isn't important enough to justify a day off, and quite frankly I don't care either.

PlumsGalore · 12/04/2018 13:33

LOL - why did I say Edward ha ha ha see- told you he wasn't important enough - I meant Harry!

Seniorcitizen1 · 12/04/2018 13:34

devil there is very little policing at football matches as the clubs employ private stewarding firms - what policing there is is paid for by the clubs

Most but not all people will get day off for the wedding anyway as it is on a Saturday.

frankchickens · 12/04/2018 13:42

what policing there is is paid for by the clubs
About half of the costs actually.

LaurieMarlow · 12/04/2018 13:44

I agree that Edward definitely isn't important enough Grin. I think a case could be made for Harry though.

mumeeee · 12/04/2018 13:49

YABU. We don't need a day off for a Royal Wedding. If you want one then use annual leave

mumeeee · 12/04/2018 13:50

Just realised it's a Saturday so a lot of people wil be off anyway

LifeBeginsAtGin · 12/04/2018 14:05

What about the Marathon then, or other sports events?

Tink2007 · 12/04/2018 14:18

BakedBeans47 - People also work on Saturdays...

bridgetreilly · 12/04/2018 14:22

YABVU. If William's wedding set any precedent it was for those in the direct line of succession. Harry isn't. New royal baby will outrank him, plus any children of William's children etc. etc. etc.

thedevilinablackdress · 12/04/2018 14:23

Looks like policing inside grounds is covered by clubs but not outside...at least round my way

thisismadness77 · 12/04/2018 14:26

Take a days leave if you need time off to attend a wedding, same as any other.

crunchymint · 12/04/2018 14:27

I don't want to attend or watch the wedding. I just want an extra days paid leave.

Funnily enough, I appreciate this, but when was the last time you heard of a bank holiday being on a Saturday? 🙄
