About the situation with Russia and the US. Putin said he'll shoot down any US missiles fired at Assad forces. Are we on the verge of all out war? Please calm me down.

Trump gonna Trump. Putin gonna, er, put the boot in. Nothing any of us can do about it. Might as well enjoy the here and now. Flowers coming up, birds singing in the morning, the grey overcast skies...Grin

Gottagetmoving · 11/04/2018 17:19

But everyone knows you're not supposed to mention the war

Grin

Wonder why

Do you struggle to control or manage your worrying about other things in your life too? What sort of impact does it have on your life and happiness?

@LimonViola you sound like an awfully ignorant person. It's because of this sort of attitude that terrible things are happening in the world...people just not caring or thinking and believing it's not their problem.
Very unhelpful response. Don't know why you bothered really.

LiviaWithGarfield · 11/04/2018 18:08

I fear that the house of cards that is current global politics maybe come tumbling down sooner than later.

lostagainandagain · 11/04/2018 18:11

@MessyMcDoogle I would also like to get a bit more informed about the world as I mainly rely on papers and the news. you mentioned podcasts in your post...where/how can I access them? Do I have to pay for them?

Gottagetmoving · 11/04/2018 18:42

What absolute rubbish! Nothing @LimonViola said was ignorant or showed an 'attitude' that causes terrible things to happen in the world.
I used to have anxiety and I used worry about stuff like this as the OP is doing. I wouldn't have found Limon's question ignorant or offensive had she asked me the same.

user1492877024 · 11/04/2018 19:01

I'm not saying you should be worried. However, if you had any thoughts of holidaying in Cyprus in the very near future, it might be a good idea o think again.

LimonViola · 11/04/2018 19:04

That's nice, lostagainandagain. I care deeply about lots of awful things happening in the world and do a lot of voluntary and paid work trying to help others and make the world a better place and donate to charity. That doesn't change the fact that worrying about huge global scale conflicts we cannot remotely influence is futile and only harms the worrier.

Though quite how you got that from the post you quoted I have no idea. You sound quite upset and weirdly offended.

user1492877024 · 11/04/2018 19:06

Doryismyname

Why is Putin evil? What do you mean that he has shown recently how far he is willing to go? Genuine questions, as I honestly don't understand what you're saying.

LimonViola · 11/04/2018 19:19

Btw lostagainandagain, what are you directly doing to influence the conflict between Russia, America and Syria? Seeing as you care so much about it? Genuinely curious as all I'm doing is donating to MSF when they're in Syria and donating to support displaced refugees. But as apparently not worrying means I don't care and think it's none of my business, please educate me on what more I can do 🤔

Tinkobell · 11/04/2018 19:31

V. Concerned after watching tonight's news and Theresa's desire to team up in a war. Great. However anxiety aside, no one else will clear the dirty dishes and fold the washing while I wring my hands with worry!☹️

Doryismyname · 11/04/2018 20:10

@user1492877024

Troll Wink

LiviaWithGarfield · 11/04/2018 20:59

Shall we just agree that people have different coping mechanisms? Wink It is a worrying situation if you think about it rationally and just because the Cuban missile crisis did no end in a nuclear war we cannot assume that we will always be so lucky.

Can I ask about the Chemical attacks? Are these really happening and who is the real perpetrator? Where did Assad get the weapons from? I cannot make myself look at the pictures of children caught up in this it's heartbreaking but i am very wary of fake news and don't know what to believe.

user1492877024 · 11/04/2018 21:28

Doryismyname

Thought as much. You're unable to answer my questions. Please don't believe everything printed in the Daily Fail.

biscuitraider · 11/04/2018 21:36

So within the next few days Trumps going to order missile attacks on Syria, Putin says he'll shoot them down. I can't see how this can possibly end well.

OP posts:
Justanotherlurker · 11/04/2018 21:46

Syria has been somewhat a proxy war for a while now, but even Labour MPs think that not taking action in 2013 was a mistake. It's not got much to do with Trump, Macron or us UK.

This is about stopping the creep of use of chemical weapons, it's a little more than willy waving, its a lot more serious than North Korea as that was the Anti-trump sentiment that really blew that out of proportion.

The US gets to test new missiles, and Russia gets to test its new missile defense. Both sides learn each other’s ability. Everyone is a winner.

We are in a strange situation where there has been a somewhat combined proxy war against ISIS in syria, the general "left" of the country ignored that and shouted we should do more when it was at its height and we now have a situation where Assad is again "potentially" using chemical weapons against its own citizens.

It was only a year ago that Putin and Trump was apparently in cahoots, for some it has become anything the Tories or Trump say is automatically wrong on political grounds, despite being in favour of such intervention beforehand (ifysim)

We do not want an Iraq2 on our hands, but its a situation for the west of damned if you, damned if you don't, whatever situation is, it entails that it will be political scoring point in the future.

It's a shit show all round, and we will never know the ins an outs of the situation, ever side has an agenda to push.

Sorry, just a rant

MessyMcDoogle · 12/04/2018 05:52

Podcasts are free, you can listen to them online or through a range of apps on your phone :) I reccomend ‘abe Lincoln’s top hat’ as a starter :)

I doubt any missiles will be launched. If they were actually going to launch missiles we wouldn't hear about it over Twitter days in advance. They would just do it and we'd hear about it after the fact. This is Trump and Putin waving their dicks around in the media. In a couple of days we will read that Trump politely bent over and took it because he didn't want to upset his puppetmaster good friend Putin.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 12/04/2018 06:58

It’s just more Willy Waggling all around. It’s not like Trump has access to anything more lethal than Twitter - thank fuck.

Don’t waste your life worrying about stuff that’s not going to happen. 💐

pigmcpigface · 12/04/2018 07:37

"Can I ask about the Chemical attacks? Are these really happening and who is the real perpetrator? Where did Assad get the weapons from?"

It does look like chemical attacks are happening, and you answered your own question about who is responsible.

Very detailed timeline on Syria's chemical programme here: www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/Timeline-of-Syrian-Chemical-Weapons-Activity

"It’s not like Trump has access to anything more lethal than Twitter - thank fuck."

Seriously?

The number of people on this thread who seem to have absolutely zero awareness of foreign policy in this geopolitical area, yet who are weighing in confidently to say "Don't worry, nothing to see here, just get on with the washing" is weird.

ginnybag · 12/04/2018 07:55

A thing to think about: This type of posturing has always happened but now the general public are seeing it.

Of course it's scary, but international politics has always been a high stakes poker game, combined with the good old art of misdirection.

Ask yourself, will Putin risk the destruction of Russia over Syria? Will his advisers, generals and ministers? The answer is a resounding no.

Would Trump risk America? Yes, because I'm not sure he understands that he would be. However, on this one, he has a point. If chemical weapons have been used against a civilian population then that's an unacceptable line crossed and it's shameful that no real response has been made.

Mostly, it's a combination of feeding an ever hungrier news machine and the old Razzle Dazzle. In the words of the song... 'as long as you keep them way off balance, they'll never see you've got no talent. Razzle Dazzle 'em and they'll never ask 'why'?'

TheHulksPurplePants · 12/04/2018 08:26

He's got plenty of lethal things available to him. However, it doesn't seem like he actually has a lot of control anymore. I'm not sure if anyone would actually let him near the big red button even if he wanted to use it.
