To expect my bag to be packed for me?

Not after a big shop but if you go to a stand up till with a few items and ask for a bag, would you expect your bag to be packed for you or at least asked if you would like to have it packed?
Before paying for bags came in I’m sure my bag was always packed for me.
A few times I’ve asked for a bag and one is been added to the pile of shopping without me even noticing, which leads to me shoving the items in so as not to hold up the queue.
Having worked in supermarkets, I would never have dreamed of just adding the bag to the shopping without packing the items. It’s not as though it adds anymore to the task.
Maybe etiquette has changed though.

Not rtft but do you expect someone to eat it for you as well?

Susanjeffery1984 · 11/04/2018 18:24

Lacucuracha - I’m making the point that I haven’t bought my own bag not that I am expecting additional service because I am paying for the bag FFS!
It’s hardly as though the 5p is added to their wage. Although that would be a great incentive to give better service 🤔I might buy a few spares if I really liked the cashier!

@Lacucuracha what I meant by local and small is that they are called locals, well that’s what we call them in London anyway. Sainsbury’s local. The smaller supermarkets who charge you 20p extra for each item you purchase, compared to the larger versions of these supermarkets.

Susanjeffery1984 · 11/04/2018 18:28

beachcomber767 - I don’t very often bring my own bags I’m afraid but fret not, I go the extra mile and always buy the 10p ones! I find they are much better quality and I always reuse them as rubbish bags. Unfortunately our Council refuse to take them with the recycling now so they go in the general refuse.

Brrring, brrring. Hello, this is the 1950's. Can we have our quaint idea about shopping back please?

Mary1955 · 11/04/2018 18:35

I'm afraid that most supermarkets time the rate of scanning these days and the cashier will be "spoken to" if they're not fast enough.

Susanjeffery1984 · 11/04/2018 18:36

Ubercorn88 - don’t you just love a debate about a 5p bag?

Plastic carrier bags are not recyclable in the street collections but supermarkets have big bins for old carrier bags. I always recycle them in here along with bread bags, plastic magazine covers, plastic parcel wrap, in fact, anything that looks and feels like a plastic carrier bag

busybuildingdens · 11/04/2018 18:41

In my local Tesco express they pack your bag for you if you buy a new bag, or if you put your own bag on the teeny tiny space which is left next to the scanner, only because otherwise there is literally nowhere to put your shopping while you pack it. To pack yourself, your bag has to be on the floor. It’s a ridiculous set up. I would much rather pack my own bag, but some people cannot keep bending down to pack their own.

wildchild554 · 11/04/2018 18:43

they normally ask me if I want with packing when I have the kids (both young and a handful)or when I've had injuries or been ill, etc. When I'm on my own they don't. I normally manage on my own anyway but sometimes the help is greatly appreciated. They probably thought you wouldn't need help so didn't ask.

ephemeralfairy · 11/04/2018 18:54

Depends on the shop. I work in Boots and I always pack if the customer buys a bag. I probably wouldn't expect my bag packed in a supermarket

MaggieWaggie41 · 11/04/2018 18:55

Oh well, obviously you are one of them :-) believe me that's something to laugh about.

riceuten · 11/04/2018 18:55

I honestly don’t care. I often find pensioners want it doing, and it slows things down a bit, but it’s a matter of supreme indifference. What I HATE is people doing 3 different shops in one and asking for a separate receipt for eqch, but that’s for a different thread.

wildchild554 · 11/04/2018 19:22

riceuten: have to say i do multiple shops, but it saves money because I use apps for free food and they have to be on different receipts to claim the money back. It's either that or I'd have to go everyday for each bit of shopping which would be pointless. They may be doing it for the same reason or theres people that do home help so they are shopping for other people and need extra receipts for the individual customers.

marymoosmum · 11/04/2018 19:30

YANBU I work in a shop and always pack the bag for the customer, so I would expect them to do it in another shop, it holds the queue up otherwise.

Billben · 11/04/2018 19:39

No, I definitely don’t expect my bag to be packed for me, whatever size shop I do. In fact, I don’t even let them pack my bags simply because a cashier will always take longer packing them then I would. And I just want to be out of supermarkets as fast as I can to be honest. I hate shopping.

SM2132 · 11/04/2018 19:47

I don't expect my bag to be packed, and have always said no when asked if I need help with packing.
However, I had to carry my 1 year old round the supermarket yesterday, my arm in agony (he is heavy!), struggling with basket, purse, keys. Had to pack at the till with baby under one arm grabbing everything and wriggling free while the checkout lady watched me, thought that was pretty rude. In fact, near the end, the lady behind me in the queue asked if I needed a hand. No trolleys and pushchair is broken.

Scarlet1234 · 11/04/2018 20:01

It depends on the stores own targets. Either they tell the staff that they must offer to pack the customer's bags or they are on a target to complete the transaction within a certain timeframe. It's not the staff's fault either way - they're just following protocol, same as when they ask if you want stamps etc... protocol. I would imagine that what with customers having to buy bags now the stores have dropped the whole offering to pack thing.

arghhelpme · 11/04/2018 20:03

Yabu.
I hate shopping in my local co op as when I ask for a bag they always pack it whilst I stand there feeling awkward.

BuffyBee · 11/04/2018 20:08

Corner shops, greengrocers, butchers always pack your bags.
Unfortunately last two becoming more rare.
And Asda always ask if your ok with your packing.

Checklist · 11/04/2018 20:11

I frequently get asked at the checkouts, if I need help with packing! Probably because I look worn out!

MRSsqueak · 11/04/2018 20:16

i do small shops at tesco and never expect my bag packed for me. i suffer with anxiety and sometimes it shows at the checkout so they do sometimes help without asking if i need any help. if they ask i usually say im fine even if i am in a bit of a flap. im a lot better now tho i shop at aldi so have to put on my big girl pants and get on with it. i just go to the ones i know arnt super fast

TotHappy · 11/04/2018 20:21

You saying a 'stand up till' made me think you mean like the ones at the kiosk eith the fags and lotto and things. Yes, i would expect then to pack the bag there if i bought one because the place they put the stuff down is also the only place to put a bag.

Skiiltan · 11/04/2018 20:33

marymoosmum - YANBU I work in a shop and always pack the bag for the customer, so I would expect them to do it in another shop, it holds the queue up otherwise.

This doesn't make sense. I pack my bags while the check-out assistant scans the items. That way I only have a few items left to pack when she/he has finished scanning. It would be ridiculous for me to wait for the assistant to scan all the items and then wait for her/him to pack my bags: this would hold up the queue, as well as resulting in my items all being in the wrong bags.

MaggieS41 · 11/04/2018 20:47

Groceries are packed for you in Australian supermarkets (except Aldi) but they have two on the go and are trained to pack items like laundry and food separately.

My local co-op always packs. It’s courteous, and practical especially when your bag is on the bench/top! It’d be just plain rude if you scanned the item and just left it sitting next to the bag! But then again customer service is pretty shit these days.
