To expect my bag to be packed for me?

Not after a big shop but if you go to a stand up till with a few items and ask for a bag, would you expect your bag to be packed for you or at least asked if you would like to have it packed?
Before paying for bags came in I’m sure my bag was always packed for me.
A few times I’ve asked for a bag and one is been added to the pile of shopping without me even noticing, which leads to me shoving the items in so as not to hold up the queue.
Having worked in supermarkets, I would never have dreamed of just adding the bag to the shopping without packing the items. It’s not as though it adds anymore to the task.
Maybe etiquette has changed though.

Yeah I've gotten my bags for life changed multiple times. It's only the plastic bags that are bags for life the material totes and lined bags etc are not.
You should have escalated it to a manager if they were refusing to do it.

I worked in a shop if you want help packing just ask and assistant will do it for you. But i admit sometimes if someone had an attitude or i just took against them i did all i could not to help them. And yes people get really nasty about packing they ask for help then are really rude if you dont magically just know how they like it. And im not talking obvious stuff like bread and milk but really personal preferences. Which is why i dont work in retail anymore got absolutely fed up of the abuse.

At the basket tills in my local Waitrose they will always ask if you want them to pack. Whether you bring your own bag or not. I don’t know about the others as I always scan and shop in Tesco which is such less hassle I think!

I think this thread is now worn out!

jocarter67 · 12/04/2018 09:03

When I go shopping someone nearly always asks if I would like any help with my packing, but I’m in a wheelchair. I usually decline because my hubby is always with me, but I regularly hear the person behind moaning about “special treatment “.

Leapfrog44 · 12/04/2018 09:54

Bring your own bag and pack it yourself

cowshindtail · 12/04/2018 10:35

YABU .I generally get offered in my local Morrisons but have always declined. In Aldi or Lidl it hasn't been offered and I don't expect them to.I once saw a very posh looking couple get to the tills in Aldi with their shopping already packed in bags which they put on the conveyer. They had to have it explained to them that it had to be loose in order for it to be scanned.I don't know whether they had always had their servants do their shopping before-very bizarre.

MotherofOats · 12/04/2018 10:47

YABU i have my own little system and hate people packing my bags. Plenty of people have full trollies and baskets all the time, and do their own packing... if you dont like it , dont buy so much at once. you sound awfully lazy to me....

CynthiaRothrock · 12/04/2018 11:09

Yes you are being v u and lazy. Theg are shop assistants not personal assistants or maids! A few shops round here will ask if you require assistance but they won't just do it for you. Is it that much of a hardship to pack a loaf of bread and a few tins in a bag or are you scared to break a nail....? Talk about entitled

curlilox · 12/04/2018 11:49

I never let anyone pack my bags, especially not the children from the local football team, scouts or whatever. I had too many heavy items dropped on bread/eggs etc in the past. But I always give them money. At my local supermarket once recently a helpful cashier (a man) put my raw meat in a plastic bag, but then put my cooked meat in with it! Grin

Susanjeffery1984 · 12/04/2018 12:02

@CynthiaRothrock have you actually read my posts or are you just having a bad day?

OP posts:

Read most of them.... they all seem as entitled as the last. You are not paying the shop for the bag btw...it (supposedly) goes to charity so the fact you are 'buying a bag and they already have to handle it so is it so hard for them to fill it' argument is a load of entitled bs. But if bag packing is your biggest problem then thats enough said....

Susanjeffery1984 · 12/04/2018 12:57

@CynthiaRothrock you will have seen that I noticed the change after the charge for the Bags came in. Who the money goes to isn’t actually my point.
It would be a pretty crap system if the shops introduced a charge whereby they profited but reduced the service in the process.
It’s not my biggest problem but it does keep me awake at night...

Just going by the OP, I haven't read the entire thread.... You sound so entitled that it's quite hilarious.

I would have loved to have been behind you in the shopping queue whilst your bag was 'added to the pile' and watched your fluster as you had to 'shove' items in.

How awful for you!

Most of us lesser beings like to pack our own bags and have the sense to put all the cold/freezer things together, tins and jars together, fresh fruit and veg etc.

So, should that rampaging bottle and hurtling tin happen to escape our tiny delicate clutches in an astonishingly haphazard delivery manner, we are enabled to deal with it through the power of organisation.

It's a strange concept I know.

Unless you're in Aldi of course - and then you know - heavy items first, bread and eggs last... just chuck it all in then deal with it.

Fiera · 14/04/2018 13:25

Yes. You are being unreasonable. Pack your own shopping

BettyBaggins · 14/04/2018 14:07

Every lunch time the people in co op pack my bag for me. Yesterday I asked if I should. The answer, 'No, quicker for us whilst you faff with paying.'

Waltzers · 14/04/2018 14:49

I’m in Australia, the check outs have bags opened out in front of the assistant usually 2 bags, sometimes more. They scan and place things directly in to the bags. You try to put things on the belt in the order you hope they’ll be packed but they’ll generally check if you want certain things packed separately. It really doesn’t take any longer, they’ve often scanned and packed half of mine before I’ve finished emptying the trolley!

A lot of places have banned plastic bags now, so you just hand over your own bags and they open them up and fill them in the same way.
