To expect my bag to be packed for me?

Not after a big shop but if you go to a stand up till with a few items and ask for a bag, would you expect your bag to be packed for you or at least asked if you would like to have it packed?
Before paying for bags came in I’m sure my bag was always packed for me.
A few times I’ve asked for a bag and one is been added to the pile of shopping without me even noticing, which leads to me shoving the items in so as not to hold up the queue.
Having worked in supermarkets, I would never have dreamed of just adding the bag to the shopping without packing the items. It’s not as though it adds anymore to the task.
Maybe etiquette has changed though.

I wouldn't dream of expecting my bag to be packed for me.

UpstartCrow · 10/04/2018 16:18

People who like to pack their own bags complain if its not done the way they like it, so a lot of places now ask if you want help.

Bekabeech · 10/04/2018 16:18

YABU I'm afraid - at least in the UK. At least 99% of shoppers would expect to pack their own bag.
I always find it odd when I got to the US to have my bag packed.
But I'd rather pack it myself then have it packed wrong. My DC have been trained in bag packing from a young age.

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 16:18

Nah, I always pack it myself either while the shop assistant is ringing up the rest of the stuff or taking the money

iklboo · 10/04/2018 16:18

I've never been asked if I want my bags packing unless there's some local scouts / kids' team doing a fundraiser.

PurpleSnails · 10/04/2018 16:19

I wouldn't expect my bag to be packed for me.

MarthaArthur · 10/04/2018 16:19

I now work in a shop and we ask if someome wants a bag. If yes we have to automatically pack the stuff into the bag for the customer.

UpstartCrow · 10/04/2018 16:19

Maybe they just ask me because I look feckless Grin

scaryteacher · 10/04/2018 16:19

This is where a couple of Belgian supermarkets win hands down. No conveyor belt - the check out person has your full trolley and an empty one with your bags in side by side. They scan each item and pack for you. I get a fridge and freezer bag, then dry goods and one for veg. It's great, and I will miss it when I move back.

Susanjeffery1984 · 10/04/2018 16:21

I’m not talking about a big shop, just if you were going to get a basket full

I think the days where supermarkets were battling with each other based on service are long gone. Now it's price all the way.

This used to happen, all the big ones used to offer to pack your bags...but now in efforts to cut costs its more likely they'll fling your groceries at you at 100mph just so they can hit their own targets..

expatinscotland · 10/04/2018 16:23

In the UK? Yes, YABU.

Justgivemesomepeace · 10/04/2018 16:23

They all seem to ask me ' Do you need any help with your packing?'

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 16:24

I’m not talking about a big shop, just if you were going to get a basket full

Yeah, they usually give you the bag as their ringing the stuff up so you pack it yourself as they're putting the stuff through, makes more sense than waiting till they've scanned everything, then packed your stuff and then took your money

Graphista · 10/04/2018 16:24

Nope. In addition I worked in retail, mainly supermarkets, on and off since 30+ years ago and never was expected to pack customers shopping it's not the case in uk excepting charity fundraisers.

Never expected nor wanted it as a customer either. The fundraisers I'd donate but ask them not to pack. It's usually younger kids who don't know not to put eggs under cans, bread in first to be squished or not to put bleach in with greengroceries.

GertieGitana · 10/04/2018 16:24

There seems to be a difference between big supermarkets and convenience stores. More often than not my bag will be packed in a small store like my local Co-op, for example. Always has been, whether paying for bags or not. I don't think Tesco, etc. have ever packed bags.

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 16:24

they're*

TheJoyOfSox · 10/04/2018 16:25

I hate having my bags packed. Cleaning products mixed with food cupboard goodies, dry cupboard mixed with upstairs stuff (toothpaste etc) eggs broken, loaf squashed, biscuits crushed!

Easier and quicker to do it myself.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 10/04/2018 16:25

Most times I get asked if I want help with packing my bags (Tesco, Co-op, M&S, Waitrose). Sometimes a bit of help is a lifesaver and I always thank the till person profusely. Maybe I look frazzled? I am definitely that parent carrying too many things, one kid whingeing or crying and the other trying to run away etc.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/04/2018 16:26

I agree about the poor cashier's targets. They are under pressure to have a certain number of items passing through their tills in a set time and if the customer packs their own shopping it speeds up the transaction. I think you can request a bag packer if you are incapacitated, elderly etc.

To be honest, you say it was just a basket of shopping. That's easy to pack yourself. I wouldn't expect staff to do that for me while I stood there.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 10/04/2018 16:27

If this was in Aldi, they expect you to put your shopping back in the basket/trolley then go over to the table along the wall to pack it in to bags.
How they keep their prices lower is somehow linked to faster checkout, so not only do they not pack for you, they dont give you room for your items or time to pack.

Sammy901 · 10/04/2018 16:27

Why would they pack your bag for you!!

I worked in a store for years that would be basket shops and I would never pack the bag unless clearly very elderly and needed help or disabled!

Talk about lazy! Pack your own bag, and the shop done very well so clearly people didn’t expect there bags packed.

AviatorShades · 10/04/2018 16:29

My local Morrisons always asks. They're always so friendly and helpful there.

HildaZelda · 10/04/2018 16:30

You expect someone to pack 'a basketful' of shopping for you, ie: one bagful.
Yes. YABU. Angry

AhNowTed · 10/04/2018 16:31

Well I'd be the first to complain about long queues due to the cashier packing able-bodied peoples bags!!
