Are there any native French speakers about please? :)

I’m writing a message to someone in French, and was just wondering if someone might be happy to check whether my French is correct :)

Thanks!

I think the op has been a bit cheeky but not so bad.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 09/04/2018 19:58

I want to know what the message is?
'2 extra pints of silver top' or 'will you marry me'?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/04/2018 19:59

On other posts OP says she is fluent in French and has a French degree from Cambridge. I suppose to top that you’d need a good native speaker.

CotswoldStrife · 09/04/2018 20:03

So which person would the OP believe? Themselves? Volunteer One? Or the brave person who volunteers to check it a third time?

Did you mean to be so rude, OP? If you wanted two versions why didn't you ask first I could hazard a guess why

Ginslinger · 09/04/2018 20:05

If you'd like a second opinion on your manners then I'm happy to help

tillytoodles1 · 09/04/2018 20:05

How rude not to trust her the first time, I can't believe you asked for a backup.

Calatonia · 09/04/2018 20:07

When I was studying French at Uni I thought it was clever to get my French boyfriend to correct my homework. He often got it wrong!
I've just proof read an email he is sending to his boss (in French).

I don't speak French but I let the funky music do the talking - is that a possibility for you OP? No second opinions needed.

😂 😂

aroomwithaperfectview · 09/04/2018 20:13

I'll be happy to help OP. French native speaker too.

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 09/04/2018 20:14

I'm happy to have a read too OP.

Buxbaum · 09/04/2018 20:17

Interested to see how many native speakers OP feels she needs to recruit before she is satisfied.

SlowlyShrinking · 09/04/2018 20:17

I’m glad it’s not just me who didn’t think the op was being cheeky or rude. I don’t tend to take offence very easily though 🤷‍♀️ (Gallic shrug)

BirthdayKake · 09/04/2018 20:24

Of course the OP wasn't being rude! Anyone could say they're French and just bullshit, surely? 🤔

halfwitpicker · 09/04/2018 20:29

Yes, but that's not as fun, is it kake? N'est pas?

PattiStanger · 09/04/2018 20:30

It is rude the way she's posted it, I'd be a bit pissed off if I'd taken the trouble to help someone and they asked for a second opinon. If the message is of such grave importance then make a bit more effort than posting on an anonymous website then snubbing the help you got.

AnnieWaits · 09/04/2018 20:31

A fluent French graduate can spot someone who is bluffing as a native speaker.

I recognise OP's username from her other threads. OP, you've had a lot of support and advice on MN. You could have been a bit more gracious.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 09/04/2018 20:35

Thanks everyone for your comments - I didn’t expect to get so many! I didn’t think I was being rude - I’m really sorry that people got offended by this.

I did in fact get an absolutely perfect reply from one of the first people to reply to this thread. I really appreciated this and I did let them know.

Again, I’m really sorry if people felt I was being rude - I just wanted to ask for a favour.

I have a French degree, but I am not totally confident about my French as I don’t live in a French-speaking country and don’t always speak French every day. And I would prefer to ask native French speakers for help if possible rather than writing completely incorrect French.

PattiStanger · 09/04/2018 20:37

If you got an absolutely perfect response what were you expecting from a second opinion Confused

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 09/04/2018 20:42

I’m really sorry - maybe it was a stupid thing to ask. I was just over-thinking the whole message and how to write it - I was finding it tricky to write even in English. I hope this is understandable. Thanks so so much again to the person who helped me with the message.

OK, I think people are being a bit harsh now! I get what you mean about not being confident, OP. It's always worth checking!
