To not want updates from the person you have sold a pet to?

Is this unreasonable?

Why not give it to a rescue then?

The clue is in the name. Rescue. If a dog needs to be rehomed but is able to stay and be looked after in its current home in the meantime then it is not in need of a rescue centre. Otherwise they would be called Rehoming Centres. Why be so goady?

JoandMax · 09/04/2018 17:03

Our cats were rehomed by a lovely mumsnetter, I was really upset and I loved getting updates from her and knowing they were being well cared for and happy.

NotTheFordType · 09/04/2018 17:05

It's very individual.

My son and I occasionally breed our fancy rats and sell the babies. We are always delighted to get updates. They are overwhelmingly positive. (We only accept people who have owned rats before or have done a LOT of research into being an owner, and we won't sell rats singly (unlike Pets at Home Hmm ) unless they can show some evidence that they already have at least one of the same sex.)

But I understand if you've had to rehome a pet for reasons outside of your control, it might be upsetting to get updates past "s/he's settled in just fine!"

Spangles1963 · 09/04/2018 17:09

Is the OP coming back? I'm interested to know a) what sort of animal the pet was and b) why she doesn't want updates (is she just not interested or is it because it's too upsetting?).

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 09/04/2018 17:11

I've got a rescue dog and tbh if the previous owner asked for updates I wouldn't give them. She's my dog and I'm under no obligation to share what we do with her with anyone.

chocolateworshipper · 09/04/2018 17:14

LTB, cancel the cheque, phone 101 and install penguin bollards.

kimanda · 09/04/2018 17:18

LOL @chocolateworshipper Grin

NKFell · 09/04/2018 17:25

@chocolateworshipper Grin should she send an email too? It was probably her MIL's fault Grin

ToadOfSadness · 09/04/2018 17:25

Why not give it to a rescue then?

Because rescues are full to bursting point with unwanted pets and have waiting lists.

Because some rescues kill them when there are too many or if they have not been rehomed within a certain time, or are at a certain age, or in some cases not viable if they need any medical treatment, regardless of whether they can be made better or not. They just can't be bothered to take the time or spend the money donated, instead paying their directors a huge salary.

Butterfly1066 · 09/04/2018 17:28

I rescued two gorgeous cats on gumtree five years ago after the owner couldn’t have them for medical reasons I still update the owner and she still asks after them

purplecorkheart · 09/04/2018 17:30

A lot depends on the circumstances. When Grandmother died a neighbour took her dog as she worked from home and the dog hated being alone. She regularly updated us on the dog and we were extremely grateful.

However, my mother's best friend had to get rid of her dog when she had her fourth child as the dog (who could open doors in the house etc) would go for the baby or anyone holding the baby. She found the upsetting and asked that they stopped.

VeganCatLover · 09/04/2018 17:30

I adopted an adult ragdoll cat last year (5years old). The woman had bought him as a kitten and he was very spoilt but she was moving in with her boyfriend and it was him or the cat Sad. I have an Instagram page for both my ragdolls so she sees daily pictures on there and comments. Poor cat was grieving for her for about 6 months he seemed heart broken. He is settled now and I don't know how she left him. He is such a soppy adorable boy who lived for his walks on his lead and a lap to sleep on.

InBlackwaterWoods · 09/04/2018 17:38

I rehomed my collie from a lovely lady whose DH left her and kids to move abroad to marry someone he met online. She couldn't cope, hence I adopted her.
The kids and her were devastated as she was a much loved pet. We met up regularly for walks for years after that, much to kids and dogs delight and are still friends now.
When ddog died, I sent her half the ashes.
I'm glad to have a friend, who loved our girl as much as I did.

HildaZelda · 09/04/2018 17:47

Slightly off topic, but when I bought my second last car (yes car not cat!) the previous owner sent me a few emails asking me how the car was doing and if it was okay!
He was almost in tears the day I drove it away. He was very attached to it, but it was a 2 seater and he had 4 kids so his missus told him he had to get rid of it. His 17 year old daughter was quite upset too, as she was learning to drive and thought that it was going to be hers.

Apologies for dragging the thread off topic.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 09/04/2018 18:20

I think it depends. If you are an involved seller who clearly cares for the pet, then expect updates from a compassionate buyer. If you are quite distant and make clear its just a business deal then you can reasonably expect no updates.
AskininApril how did you run the transaction or what did you ask for?

CotswoldStrife · 09/04/2018 18:27

Are you the one giving the updates, OP and the previous owner doesn't want them?

HisBetterHalf · 09/04/2018 18:43

Did you breed it OP?

We lived in a first floor flat, we had a kitten but he was very adventurous so kept trying to jump out of the window. We rehomed him because he clearly wanted to be outside and it wasn't safe.
I would've loved updates, and she said she'd send me pictures but never did.
I even messaged her asking how he was but she ignored them blocked me ☹️

JaceLancs · 09/04/2018 19:02

I paid a fair bit out for a kitten who was being rehomed as family realised they’d taken too much on with house renovations and 2 young children
Was happy to pay as he had been vaccinated, microchipped etc, came with basket, toys, food, pet carrier, pet loo etc even though I didn’t need most things as already have cats, it was also to reassure them that I really wanted him and would look after him
At their request I what’s apped them pics and updates for a few months - until they seemed happy he was settling in and said all the best etc and I didn’t need to continue

TattyTShirt · 09/04/2018 19:16

My sister had to rehome her two gorgeous, very well trained collies through no fault of her own. She handed them over to a breed specific group and was promised regular updates. She has received no updates whatsoever. She is very ill and would love a pic of her precious pair. She spent a great deal of time training them and they were her absolute world. Some bitch has two Stunning, extremely well trained dogs and can't find it in her heart to let a dying woman know how her dogs have settled with a brief update of how they are doing. Some selfish people about!
