New costa meal deal is irresponsible

Costa have just launched a lunchtime meal deal with a toastie, crisps and a coffee. The one pictured on the ad with a cheese and ham toastie and a latte contains 754 calories, 34g fat, 15.4g saturated fat and 2.1g salt. You can cut off a bit of the calories and fat by opting for lower-fat milk, but it’s still a third of an adult’s daily calories with no source of fibre and no fruit or veg. This sort of thing normalises overeating: by making this a “meal deal” the company is presenting this as a normal lunch option, psychologically nudging people towards consuming an energy-rich, nutritionally poor midday meal.

Clearly it’s a first world problem and we all have choices and don’t need to buy this, but it’s the normalisation of overeating like this which I think has done more than anything to raise obesity levels. AIBU?

My understanding is that whole milk is pretty good for weight loss?

In what way? 7 calories is better than 250+ calories for weight loss.

Mightymucks · 09/04/2018 13:49

YABU and I don’t want what I can eat policed. I’m an adult I can read labels?

OP, if you can understand the label, how come you think the rest of the population are illiterate knuckled dragging oiks who need rescuing by you lest they stuff themselves to death by forging on Turkey Twizzlers and mars bars?

adaline · 09/04/2018 13:49

I really don't see the problem?

No milk is better ...

GabsAlot · 09/04/2018 13:51

so what theyre a business other places do meal deals they have to keep up

id rather cake than crisps myself but sounds good

gillybeanz · 09/04/2018 13:51

They are a business and not responsible for what people buy.
We are expected to take responsibility for ourselves and not expect others to do it for us.
YAB so U, it's funny. Grin

DairyisClosed · 09/04/2018 13:51

Why should they be responsible for what Co scenting adults eat?

HopeClearwater · 09/04/2018 13:52

Welcome to capitalism

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 09/04/2018 13:52

How much is the meal deal, i might get one.

i can always head and have a good sesh at the gym later.

Youshallnotpass · 09/04/2018 13:53

I wish people would stop trying to tell others what they should or shouldn't be eating.

It is MY choice to eat whatever the hell I want.

I say this as someone who drinks americano's instead of latte's to control calorie intake... But I do like the odd latte and I shouldn't be penalised for buying it.

Saz1995 · 09/04/2018 13:53

Would much rather have a costa meal deal than a McDonald's meal tbh

CircleofWillis · 09/04/2018 13:54

Sounds yummy! How much are they charging?

LagunaBubbles · 09/04/2018 13:56

For fuck's sake, will people stop trying to tell other grown adults what they should or should not eat. How much more nanny state are we going to get? I can see the principle behind the sugar tax but much further we're going to have to have a bloody Food Police

This with bells on. Why do so many people here obsess over others peoples diets so much?? Not everything you eat has to be "healthy" either.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 09/04/2018 13:57

So a meal that is 1/3 of the recommended calorie intake of an adult? When most adults eat two or three meals a day? What’s the problem? They will likely have some fruit and veg with their other meals/as snacks. And on the other 6 days of the week I imagine they will eat something else.

People need to stop freaking out about things like this. If I bought a meal deal like that I’d eat the sandwich, drink the coffee (although latte is too milky for my taste, full fat milk is definitely needed in coffee!) and then put the crisps in my bag for another time. As an adult I think I’m capable of regulating my own food intake and should be allowed to eat crisps if I want some, so what’s the problem?

Dozer · 09/04/2018 13:58

Info on calorie content should be clear and upfront, eg MacDonalds, Pret.

I commute through a central London station daily. most outlets selling calorific food, eg Upper Crust, pasty place, croissant place, burrito place, don’t have ANY nutrition info available, even searching on websites. That should change IMO.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 09/04/2018 13:58

I didn’t realise all our meals had to be healthy now. When did that law come in? Hmm

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 13:58

I would eat something like that occasionally certainly not every day. I'm an adult I can make informed decisions about what I choose to eat. So YABU.

Noqonterf · 09/04/2018 13:58

Maybe Costa should be banned altogether. Their coffee is overpriced anyway. Meh. Live and let live. I don't care what other people choose to eat.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 09/04/2018 13:59

They exist to make money, not to ensure the nation gets it's five a day.

Dozer · 09/04/2018 14:01

It’s clear that most adults can’t maintain a weight within the recommended BMI range.

Most food suppliers offering high calorie foods have not made changes voluntarily, so IMO there is a case for regulation, particularly on food labelling and clear nutritional info at the point of sale.

There is research showing that the “food environment” makes a difference.

Not everyone loses weight by counting calories. Full fat foods are richer and more satisfying so you tend to eat less of them and also snack less. Hence high fat low carb diets. Obviously in this situation the toastie would be carb heavy but even so, for those who enjoy eating, a small amount of a richer food is better than lots of low fat but unsatisfying food.

Sn0tnose · 09/04/2018 14:02

Oh dear, Habenero. You are going to lose your mind when I tell you about a place called "McDonalds". Grin

Butteredparsn1ps · 09/04/2018 14:02

You can also choose fruit or popcorn instead of crisps and tea or an Americano, instead of a milky drink.

RoadToRivendell · 09/04/2018 14:03

A full-fat cappuccino sees me right through to a late lunch. I'd die if I tried this with an Americano.

stateschool · 09/04/2018 14:03

I would look at that meal deal and still not have the crisps and drink water or herbal tea with the sandwich. So YABU. It’s not flipping Whole Foods it’s a coffee chain.
