New costa meal deal is irresponsible

Costa have just launched a lunchtime meal deal with a toastie, crisps and a coffee. The one pictured on the ad with a cheese and ham toastie and a latte contains 754 calories, 34g fat, 15.4g saturated fat and 2.1g salt. You can cut off a bit of the calories and fat by opting for lower-fat milk, but it’s still a third of an adult’s daily calories with no source of fibre and no fruit or veg. This sort of thing normalises overeating: by making this a “meal deal” the company is presenting this as a normal lunch option, psychologically nudging people towards consuming an energy-rich, nutritionally poor midday meal.

Clearly it’s a first world problem and we all have choices and don’t need to buy this, but it’s the normalisation of overeating like this which I think has done more than anything to raise obesity levels. AIBU?

I can't believe you posted something so weeblist.

HoneyDragon · 09/04/2018 20:45

I’m sorry.

Dieu · 09/04/2018 20:46

I would probably get a cake too, to be honest.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 09/04/2018 20:47

When did it no longer become a person's own responsibility to be in control of their own health?

iamyourequal · 09/04/2018 20:49

I can’t get over the horrible idea of eating a toastie whilst drinking coffee. Yuk!

Scabetty · 09/04/2018 20:56

Ridiculous comment Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2018 20:59

I would have to have a cold drink with the toastie and the coffee afterwards.

PortiaCastis · 09/04/2018 21:16

I have a toastie and a black coffee very occasionally in M&S, don't care what anyone thinks

You don't have to eat it - it's really that simple! If other people do want to eat that then it's their choice. Yabu for even wasting your time thinking about and then writing post regarding this.

MrsEricBana · 09/04/2018 21:21

I agree with OP, meal deals encourage overeating imo.

The calorie and salt content of the meal is fine. 1/3 of your daily calories, 1/3 of the salt. It isn’t brimming with micronutrients and fruit and veg, admittedly, but I think a healthy option should probably weigh in at a similar calorie level for anyone who isn’t actively dieting.

Some of the healthy options at places like ITSU have insane amounts of salt.

How is a coffee, a sandwich and a packet of crisps or piece of fruit overeating? And who is forcing you to eat it?

I think people should be able to make their own choices.

If that's a Costa toastie let them get on with it.

eggsandchips · 09/04/2018 21:59

Mind you given some of the responses here, I dread to think what opinions are of all you can eat buffets (!!)

Whatshallidonowpeople · 09/04/2018 22:17

3rd of the cals for 1 of your 3 meals a day. What the problem, don't buy it then.

Thursdaydreaming · 09/04/2018 23:06

Obviously it's not a healthy choice for every day, but not sure why this particular deal from this particular retailer has come under fire from OP when Starbucks, McDonalds, KFC, subway, burger King, take away chicken shops, kebab shops, bars, bottle shops, dessert restaurants, restaurants in general, cafes and supermarkets exist, all selling unhealthy food - often on special or in the form of some meal deal. This deal isn't even that outrageous so it's a weird one to be concerned about.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/04/2018 07:08

I find it very amusing that everyone is sharing their meal deal

‘Well i had an egg sandwich ‘ ! Grin

What OP points to is the alarming trend that’s mushroomed in the past 20 years whereby we are sleepwalking to easily consuming over 2000 calories a day without even realising it . Literally everywhere we look and everywhere we shop . It worries me .

She has Maybe picked a bad example , but overeating is now the norm and not the exception . It’s now ‘normal’ to have fattening snacks daily and multiple times a day . It’s also normal to be sentient .

I had reallly bad back pain - and the GP told me the only way to fix it was to lose weight and exercise . And you know what ! It worked ! Took
Me 2 years . Think how many people are out there with back pain , knee pain , hip pain and they are the tip of the ice berg . Fat berg Grin

TerfsUp · 10/04/2018 20:38

It’s also normal to be sentient .

Yes. Being sentient is normal. Do you perhaps mean 'sedentary'?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/04/2018 20:45

I did indeed !

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/04/2018 20:46

Sedentary

Bel04 · 10/04/2018 20:49

I'd eat that for lunch and I'm 8 stone. I do go decaf but that doesn't make a difference to the calories. I think it's ok as long as you're having some veg with dinner.

From what I've seen of overweight family/friends it's snacking and drinking lots of fruit juices/flavoured drinks/coke etc instead of water that seems to make them out the weight on.

Kirta · 10/04/2018 21:13

Meh. It's Costa Fortune, and they aren't claiming it's a healthy choice. It's fast, convenient food much the same as a lot of other fast food places. People choose to eat it, or don't. I wouldn't say 'irresponsible' necessarily.
