DH flew to Morocco today to buy a punnet of strawberries

He didn't - he instead visited Sainsburys marked down section (God we both love a reduced sticker!) But Morocco - really???
I'm not 100% obsessed with only buying produce within season but the strawberries smell of ... air - no strawberry aroma, just nothing really.
What is the point of flying these foodstuffs in at vast expense? Because people buy them I guess.
Nothing is a seasonal treat anymore and we all expect everything, all year round.

I’ve just purchased 4 large packs of Waitrose strawberries and they were alright actually. Better than a few months ago. It’s getting closer to summer

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 08/04/2018 21:12

Strawberries are horrid.

misses point of thread

3luckystars · 08/04/2018 21:13

This is like that Take A Break magazine cover that said ‘I was a human omelette’ but the story inside was nothing like that.

Your title is a lie. I want to make a complaint.

drspouse · 08/04/2018 21:14

We got some from Booths and I'm pretty sure they were British. Of course under glass/plastic so not much better.

Snooks1971 · 08/04/2018 21:14

viques - great post

DS2 doesn't care, he even loves strawberries that smell of air, he ate 6 bigger than his hand for pudding tonight, plus a handful of Maltesers.

grasspigeons · 08/04/2018 21:15

part of me thinks its sad that strawberries are flown out of season round the world. But the other part of me thinks that we cant actually grow enough food in England to support our population anyway.

We are dependent on food coming from other places so why not strawberries.

scaryteacher · 08/04/2018 21:17

I bought some at Easter, but in my defence they were the first of the local Belgian strawberries, and they were good. I paid €3.99 per punnet though.

IrenetheQuaint · 08/04/2018 21:18

Totally agree - at least when it comes to soft fruit. It's so tasteless when it's been flown round the world, whereas oranges, green veg etc are fine.

I do like eating seasonally, but going entirely seasonal would be pretty grim between November and April. Turnip again? Oh lovely!

VladmirsPoutine · 08/04/2018 21:19

Do you know anything, just even one single thing about international trade / globalisation / world economies? You know... just stuff about how the world works?

GreyGardens88 · 08/04/2018 21:20

How terrible for you OP how on Earth did you endure the horrors of Moroccan strawberries. You need to give your head a wobble if this infuriates you so much

maddiemookins16mum · 08/04/2018 21:21

My DH gets embarrassed when (on the rare occasion) we go shopping together and I tut (quietly) at him putting some item from a far flung country in the basket (bananas aside).
His response however was...'so you'll only buy English wine now' as I slipped some Chilean chenin blanc in the trolley.

Coldilox · 08/04/2018 21:22

I bought British strawberries the other day. Thought it was a bit early but they were there, and very nice

MrsTylerJoseph · 08/04/2018 21:24

I bought an Easter egg today. You’re right, nothing is a seasonal treat anymore.

MrsGrindah · 08/04/2018 21:25

And we export food to other countries don’t we? I honestly don’t see what’s so bad about this. I like eating a variety of fruit and veg.Didnt realise I wasn’t supposed to. And why is food any different from any other products ? ( pretty sure this iPad wasn’t made in Yorkshire!)

GilligansKitchenIsland · 08/04/2018 21:25

I bought some apples last October (in England) and realised when I got home that they'd been flown in from New Zealand! Confused The supermarkets do sometimes make weird decisions about where they source their produce from.

YimminiYoudar · 08/04/2018 21:26

Peaches and other stoned fruit also taste of nothing when they are out if season.

Snooks1971 · 08/04/2018 21:28

Vlad - yes thankyou I email Thailand, India and the Philippines daily with my job and understand commerce Hmm I am aware of the yuan / usd cost plus the shipping, plus the exchange rate etc until you get landed cost then trade goes on - and the retailer sells at xxx
I don't deal in strawberries though so obviously that's my weakness

Maybe I just want to be able to buy fruit/veg like when I was young (70s/80s)
misty eyed

Not only are those forrin folk stealing all our jobs and houses they're also infiltrating our supermarkets with their forrin foods eh?

Snooks1971 · 08/04/2018 21:36

Vlad yep I've seen the threads with forrin folk today

Before I comment OP, can you please tell me what opinions you deem useful so I copy and paste something that pleases you? I wouldn't want to get the same cuntish reply that @tabbymack got for no reason.

Peartree17 · 08/04/2018 21:38

Uh...I thought TabbyMack's opinion was useful, actually. Trade makes countries richer. It's not patronising to point out a perspective not captured by your 'why buy fruit imported from Morocco when the stuff you can buy three months hence is nicer?". I don't like the crappy fruit in Sainsbury's, in or out of season. I buy from a really good greengrocer on my high street, lower prices, less packaging. But I will certainly buy imported fruit and veg, and so, I am sure, do you. Because the UK climate only yields certain crops. But feel free to live on turnips and cabbage for a third of the year if it makes you happy.
