“Your Face is Red”

SilverOnToast · 08/04/2018 19:49

I’ve had rosacea pretty much my whole adult life. Triggers include exercise, hot drinks, alcohol, uv light, changes in temperature, spicy food and public speaking. It’s mainly on my nose and cheeks. I can’t imagine this is going to get much better going into menopause, so I’m just accepting it and moving on.

AIBU for getting a bit annoyed with others commenting about my “red face” at work/school/every social occasion? I usually just say “oh yeah, it’s just my rosacea,” but AIBU to think that etiquette dictates that you don’t need to comment on others appearance?

I hate this! Both my sons and myself have a health condition which affects our skin tone (the youngest and myself are now minus a couple of internal organs to rectify this) and you wouldn't believe the amount of people, some strangers even, who feel that they have to comment. Either that or stare.

battenbergbutterfly · 09/04/2018 07:25

From now on if anyone ever points out that I'm blushing or red (when I bloody well know I am because I feel like I'm on fire) I'm going to point out something about their face and mention my opinion on it. See how they like it.

pinkflamingo121318 · 09/04/2018 07:36

My mum has this and uses Clinique Double Wear foundation. It's the only one that hides it and you'd never know.

It is around £30 a bottle, but she makes it last a whole year (only need a couple of drops!) so me and my sister always buy it for Mother's Day.

A lot of people comment that she's "caught the sun" during summer, I never really thought about how frustrating that must be until this thread!

Iusedtobecarmen · 09/04/2018 10:16

I haven't got rosacea but i sometimes get a blotchy red rash on neck and chest.
It sometimes happens sometimes doesn't.
It can be if anxious angry or sometimes if I'm just chatting.
I don't comment though I can feel it happening. Most people don't mention it but some do. Mainly colleagues who will say "you have a rash all over you""
Well thanks.
I just feel embarrassed and say "have I?"
Oh course it makes the whole thing worse. You can obviously tell it's not a rash that means I'm ill. Like bloody chicken pox or something!!
They are not rude people generally or strangers because if they we're,I certainly wouldn't be shy about commenting back.
Although I say they are not rude,I suppose they must be as I would never do such a thing!!
Same with blushing-i've never commented.on people blushing
It's not even remotely funny unless you are about 15

Some people, I've noticed, even those John would consider to be really nice, feel entitled to comment inappropriately
I've had people say comments about friends even though these people know we are good mates!! I'd never dream of it and believe me, I have plenty to say about most things

Some people are total cheeky fuckers

Iusedtobecarmen · 09/04/2018 10:17

*those I would consider to be nice

Not John lol. Wtf

blueyacht · 09/04/2018 10:23

Yep, same here! I hate it. A lot of posters on here rate Soolantra (didn't work for me). I like the Kalme range of skin products

Tamingoftheglue · 09/04/2018 10:34

Ugh I hear ya! My mil. God love her but she is like a bubbling coffee with its lid flapping.

Went to a wedding only recently, pil babysat for a few hours in the evening. "Oh you look different!" She says, not you look nice, no, you look different. Taking it as a compliment (i'm a sahm, I live in leggings with my hair piled on my head) I said "thank you". She said "yes, you look so different with your hair down, it makes your face look so...thin." Nearly died. Yes, thank you for embarrassing me, that is exactly what I want to feel when I've already told you I feel so nervous and like a fat fraud in this fucking dress that I can barely breathe in!

itsalldyingout · 09/04/2018 12:43

I'm having success with The Ordinary's Azaleic Acid - hope the results are long-lasting as it's been hell to get hold of.

For a natural cover-up on makeup-free days I'm loving BareMinerals primers. I love the Prime Time BB primer as it has just enough yellow to counteract my redness without looking odd. They did have an anti-redness one which was quite yellow but great for wearing under makeup.

I got it a while back but can't find it at BareMinerals now. If anyone finds it, can they post please?

I tried lasers for veins and can't recommend it enough. I'd been told I'd need a top up after a few years but it's been at least 4 since I had it and they haven't reappeared.

I'd choose more carefully now as there is such a wide range out there. I have a little residual diffuse redness where the veins were blasted. I was warned it might happen and it's not great, but much, much better than having veins that would melt makeup from my face within minutes of the first flush.

Can anyone recommend a laser type for this kind of diffuse redness? If the azaleic acid doesn't make a long-term difference I'll probably go for treatment next year.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/04/2018 13:17

Me too OP Sad

Both my parents seem to ‘forget’ I have rosacea and am very upset about it and comment. It upsets me. I wear make up unless I’m leaving the house. A lot of make up.

If I had perfect skin I’d never wear make up again. Truly. I wear it to make myself feel human because I’m not exactly blessed in the looks department regardless of skin!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/04/2018 13:18

@itsalldyingout go to your doc and ask for Finacea, it’s azalaic acid but a stronger concentration than The Ordinary. It worked for me for about a year but unfortunately has lost its efficacy. Also, it stings like a mofo.

Cath2907 · 09/04/2018 13:30

I have rosacea and no-one has ever commented on mine. I also have resting bitch face.... perhaps there is a connection!

itsalldyingout · 09/04/2018 13:31

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira - thanks for the rec. If I ever manage to get an appointment, I'll ask.

Yes, getting a GP appointment other than ringing in the morning for an urgent, is bloody impossible at our GP.

I have a medical condition that needs close monitoring and I still can't get appointments.

Ivorbig1 · 09/04/2018 13:34

I used to really suffer with this, it’s much better these days.
Simply say you just had a magnificent orgasm. That should turn their face red.

Herewegoagainagain · 09/04/2018 13:36

My brother had rosacea in his late teens/early twenties and was very, very down about it. A cousin of ours is very pass remarkable and decided to announce that my DB had severe sunburn at a wedding and wouldn't let it go. I took him aside and explained the condition and that sometimes it's a good idea to think about impact before commenting on someone's personal appearance. He was very upset at the idea that he'd upset my DB who can't really bear his company since.

Laser treatment sorted it out for him, thankfully, after trying different medications and dietary approaches etc.

Orlandointhewilderness · 09/04/2018 13:39

Oh my god, so completely yes to this. I'm a redhead and I flush very easily, especially after going from outside to inside and the other way around. I HATE it being commented on. I can bloody feel it!!

HildaOnAHarley · 09/04/2018 14:07

Oh god, the inevitable summer conversations when it seems like everyone and their dog has to comment on my "sunburn". My bastard MIL can never resist telling anyone that will listen that "I always think Hilda looks just like a big, old farmer's wife". I am not a farmer's wife. And, with apologies to any real farmers' wives here, it is not meant as a compliment.

Being prescribed Lymecycline antibiotics really helped but I don't like taking them long term.

I use Clinique Redness Solutions make up if I'm going out and that really gives good coverage and blends nicely so that it doesn't feel like I'm wearing a mask.

I definitely think diet helps mine, when I can be bothered to cut out all the stuff that seems to trigger it.......I bloody love spicy food but it really doesn't love me back. Sad

RubySlippers77 · 09/04/2018 21:12

I used to suffer terribly from flushing/ redness - very pale, sensitive skin - as a PP mentioned, the Kalme range is really good:

www.skinshop.co.uk/range/kalme

The moisturiser is thick so you only use a tiny bit, lasts for ages. Honestly changed my life, I used to get similar comments all the time!

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 10/04/2018 12:33

What would be best type of laster treatment for this as there seems to be so many different ones.

My nose is red, not sure if its rosacea or just lots of broken veins.
