“Your Face is Red”

SilverOnToast · 08/04/2018 19:49

I’ve had rosacea pretty much my whole adult life. Triggers include exercise, hot drinks, alcohol, uv light, changes in temperature, spicy food and public speaking. It’s mainly on my nose and cheeks. I can’t imagine this is going to get much better going into menopause, so I’m just accepting it and moving on.

AIBU for getting a bit annoyed with others commenting about my “red face” at work/school/every social occasion? I usually just say “oh yeah, it’s just my rosacea,” but AIBU to think that etiquette dictates that you don’t need to comment on others appearance?

Another rosacea sufferer here, and I hate it when people comment on it, particularly those who see me often so they know I'm not just a bit hot or constantly burning with embarrassment. I have a relative who several times has commented on my 'weather-beaten face' Hmm

I explain that it's a skin condition that's almost impossible to cure but that I'd love to be rid of, so people didn't feel they have no option but to mention that the state of my face is bothering them.

Tinkobell · 08/04/2018 21:21

Attack can be the best defence. Trying saying "Am I....omg, so are you....what the hell can it be?" I get rosacea periodically on the nose as raised red bumps. I swear by Avene skincare (for intolerant skins).... so calming.

LeeRoar · 08/04/2018 21:21

All the time Sad - Mostly after lunch/coffee.

Mostly at work from either my manager who points it out all the time and my boss who takes it as a sign that I am flustered and incompetent and therefore shouldn't be put in what could be potentially stressful positions. I just feel like screaming that I'm not upset my face is just red!

But I suppose that would just prove that I am upset? Blush

wakemeupbefore · 08/04/2018 21:22

Use green concealer.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 08/04/2018 21:24

I was just going to post that, wakemeup. Do they still make that green correcting stuff that you wear under foundation?

TamzinGrey · 08/04/2018 21:26

DH suffers from rosacea and is really self conscious about it. People are always pointing out to him that his face looks red, and I feel like killing them. Why on earth does anyone feel the need to do this ? Reminds me of when I used to blush a lot as a teenager and felt so mortified with people saying "You've gone all red". Grrrrrrrr.

wakemeupbefore · 08/04/2018 21:27

Superdrug does this £2 green stick thing in plain white packaging and it works marvellously.

PeterIanStaker · 08/04/2018 21:28

Green concealer will simply not cover the redness when applied in workable quantities. In many cases you're talking about very bright, almost raw-looking redness on most of the face, plus neck and chest flushing. It's either not enough and you look red, patchy and slightly queasy, or you're into The Exorcist territory.

couchparsnip · 08/04/2018 21:33

I blush at the drop of a hat too. My old boss used to point it out which obviously made it much worse. Luckily my new boss also suffers from the same and has made it clear that he doesn't appreciate being told about it.

troodiedoo · 08/04/2018 21:34

Another one here! Why does everything fun in life trigger it?
I find green concealer just makes me look grey. Kind of used to my furnace face now.

kimanda · 08/04/2018 21:35

YANBU. Why the fuck do people have to say anything? Hmm

My friend's DH who is very pale, has 5-6 months of every year (May to October) of 'you're very pale aren't you,' and 'are you ill?' and 'do you have anemia?' and his favourite one 'For fuck's sake get a tan!' Hmm

Some people are such utter cunts. That is all there is to it actually.

One person (who used to work with my friend's husband and saw him for the first time in about 6 months,) said 'Fuck me you look like you've got a disease with your pure white skin - can't you take some tablets for it or something?' My friend saw red, and had a go at her bad teeth... She said 'maybe you can get some tablets to whiten your black teeth!' The woman went deep red, said nothing, and skulked off.

She said, 'if people see fit to slag off my beloved Steve, they will feel my fucking wrath.'

Good for her. She's got his back! She goes in for the kill when the cunts comment on his 'PALE SKIN.'

He can't help it, it's how he's made...it's his Gaelic blood.

And yeah, as for 'redness' in the face and neck..... don't people just LOVE to comment?!!

Cunts. Hmm

I have had Rosacea for over 20 years and my strategies are avoidance. I used to have massive panic attacks when I flushed in public and this led to a nervous breakdown in my twenties. I’m hugely impressed by those of you who manage to be confident enough to be rude to those people who love pointing out that you’re red.

I’ve been using a prebiotic recently that I swear has helped with my flushing. Although I tend to be socially avoidant I was still flushing at home when I ate certain foods (off the top of my head nuts, foods with certain additives in like stocks and gravies, processed foods). Anyway since I’ve been taking this prebiotic everyday I really think there’s been a huge improvement. So it might be worth a try! The supplement is called Imuno and it comes in individual sachets that you add to a warm drink. Tastes quite sweet.

borlottibeans · 08/04/2018 21:41

I'm sorry that you have to deal with these rude people, and I'm just as sorry you have to make a choice between cheese and having your face do what you want it to. Flowers

Rainagain1 · 08/04/2018 21:57

Another Rosacea sufferer here and hate when people point it out. Like I hadn't noticed. My gran always makes comments too which is annoying.

Buy sudocrem is amazing for it! Yes the baby nappy cream. Smear some on at night and it really helps.

Alison100199 · 08/04/2018 21:58

Just to point out that suggesting green concealer is not the answer. To a slight tinge of pink, maybe. To the raw redness of rosacea then no.

DangerEgg · 08/04/2018 21:59

Just say 'it is rude to make personal comments. Did you mean to be so rude?'

Why people feel the need to point out what you know already is beyond me.

Had this all my life about my goldfish eyes, big nose and blue-white skin, and then if I blushed..... Blush Angry One friend licking her finger, pointing it at my cheek and doing the hissing sound in front of my crush. Cheers.

I know where you are coming from!

EssexMummy123456 · 08/04/2018 22:01

there are a couple of threads on style and beauty about this and forums/facebook pages, it seems that metrogel or soolantra creams are best at taking away the spots and IPL laser for the redness. Have you tried any of these OP?

ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2018 22:08

I have rosacea, and the only person who's ever commented on it is DH. If anyone else did, I think they'd deserve a 'did you mean to be so rude?'

I do sometimes treat it, but generally just go with a good foundation - I'm using a clarins one at the moment which covers the red but blends really well so I don't need to plaster my whole face with it.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 08/04/2018 22:09

People are like that Confused

I am reminded daily, by helpful people, that I really am very tall.

A sarky "really?! Omg what happened, I was average size this morning" or "No, I am average you.must be quite small" does the job, but most often I just say: "yes, I know"

These people are like children, who feel they need to say out loud what they think....

Green cream/powder helps with rosacae, if you can be bothered. Or tell people something about their appearance in return "you have hair growing out of your ears" or "you have dandruff in your eyebrows" ? Grin

SauvignonBlanche · 08/04/2018 22:17

I’ve been called ‘Rudolph’ before as well. Sad
I’ve given up now and always wear makeup, Clinique’s redness solutions range.

Daifuku9 · 08/04/2018 22:18

It’s rude and unnecessary. I don’t have rosacea, so no comments on redness. I have received that type of comment, for example, about a couple of milia on my face. Intense look at my cheek as if something was very wrong, then: “You have these two weird bumps on your skin.” It came from a coworker at the time, who seemed to make herself feel better using rude behavior.
I just gave her a hard look and said, “Yes, I noticed.”
Maybe just say the same?
Also, a green primer would be good too if the powder alone isn’t enough.

WhiteFreesias · 08/04/2018 22:18

Miss Mary is right There is a special bench in hell for people who like to point out someone else going red/blushing" Flowers

I have rosacea. Soolantra has sorted the spots out completely. I take antibiotics for the redness.

I'm over it: 'I know, that's a very personal comment" or "I don't think we should talk about each other's appearance". Hmm

I won't video chat with anyone except DH and DC. We are about to get Skype for business in work and that can fuck right off.

Angry < my face right now

WhiteFreesias · 08/04/2018 22:21

Green tint does not help. I have Vichy foundation that has totally coverage but it's too thick.

CraftyYankee · 08/04/2018 22:23

I also have rosacea and tend to perspire when it's warm. I've given up trying to cover it as I just smear around any concealer when I try to blot.

I often get people commenting on how red I am. I get it on my upper arms along with KP in addition to my face.

If annoyed when people point it out (in case I hadn't noticed?) then I say, "Yes, it's a diagnosed medical condition" with a lofty Queen stare.

SilverOnToast · 08/04/2018 22:25

Yes I have tried metrogel EssexMummy, but it causes a weird sensation where I can’t feel my face (it does clear the skin though) I do keep trying it again, but the numb- face feeling is really weird!

Thanks for all the green skin products recommendations too- I have tried quite a few products - mainly stick concealers, but I find the coverage always looks horribly patchy, as Peterlan mentioned. Maybe I’m using the wrong thing!
