To skip my GTT again?

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 17:58

I'm 30 weeks pregnant and have a scheduled gluten tolerance test tomorrow (high BMI/high risk pregnancy). This will be my second attempt at taking this test, I have HG and I tried a week ago, threw up the drink, and the test had to be cancelled.

So, tomorrow is the retest. But DH is away at work and I have 3.5yo DS (who has ASD) at home with me all day. I need to fast (huge issue with HG) and then spend at least two hours at the hospital having blood drawn hourly. DS isn't going to like that. At all. Initially I thought I could manage it, but tbh it's looking pretty impossible atm. DS, to others, will present as a naughty child (running off, being loud) and I'm going to be feeling grim at absolute best.

I had a successful GTT already, at 17 weeks. It was normal. I also had a general blood test last week that showed normal sugar levels. I do WANT to do the test, and be monitored properly, but it's just damn hard with all these symptoms AND DS being so full on.

AIBU to skip again? Well, I know it's U but would you do it under those circumstances?

Having had HG & a GTT I would request I had a HBAC1 blood test instead. This is the plan agreed with my consultant for my next pregnancy. Plan B would be for finger prick monitoring, I will not be having a GTT again.

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:03

Good tip RainbowGrimm. Maybe I could discuss at my next consultant appointment.

I didn't have a GTT this time as I had GD with my first. I just went straight onto the GD diet and monitoring.

I would skip it in your case but only on the same basis, as if your blood sugars are too high, you can do damage to both of you. And whilst an h1bac average test is a good indicator, it's not showing you whether you are spiking after certain meals.

The plus side - I'm 15lbs lighter a week after giving birth than I was when I conceived!

rainbowgrimm · 08/04/2018 18:03

Sorry, HBA1C.

elliejjtiny · 08/04/2018 18:04

I think I would tbh. I did the gtt with "normal" morning sickness and it was really grim. I've got a 3.5 year old with suspected ASD and there is no way I could have done it with him being there. Can you ask to borrow one of those finger prick glucose monitors and monitor your glucose levels for a week or so?

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:04

HG diet is pretty sugar high SaucyJane, carbs and fizzy drinks are sometimes the only things you can get down. And I'm not interested in losing weight while pregnant.

In your circumstances I would probably skip. BUT why don't you have any child care for your DS? You need him to have people he can stay with and is used to - who is going to care for him during the birth? Who is your back up? Do you have any more back ups?

I wouldn't dream of taking a 3 year old NT to this kind of test with me, nevermind one with ASD. You really need to get some back up child care plans, pay if you have to, but if he has ASD he will need time to get used to them.

I would skip - partly because during my last pregnancy they really struggled to get bloods, so I'm not sure just how many tests of various kinds were skipped as they prioritised.

catkind · 08/04/2018 18:05

I don't think YABU, I think I'd skip in those circumstances. Tests are offered, they aren't compulsory. It's a balance of risks against known consequences.

Fasting/drinking sugar yick was bad enough in normal pregnancy, when you're struggling to keep fluids and food down as in HG the consequences of doing it are worse. Your own nutrition and keeping hydrated is also important to baby.

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:06

No backups Bekabeech, no family nearby and we just moved to a new town so few friends nearby. He does go to nursery but they're on holiday atm.

I should point out that this is DC2. I did not have GD with DC1. I know this is by no means a guarantee though.

I have mine on Thursday and I'm dreading it for similar reasons. I have to take my 3 year old dd with me as my husband has training with work. I've told the midwife that if I vomit then I won't do it again and they will have to find another way of doing it. It's horrible feeling sick and looking after a toddler you have my sympathy.

rainbowgrimm · 08/04/2018 18:08

The other option I was given, though wouldn't be helpful in your case, was to have a planned admission for it & know I was going to need fluids & IV antiemetics after to get me back on an even keel.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 08/04/2018 18:10

I wouldn’t do it under those circumstances it’s just too much stress

But HG still at 30 weeks? You poor poor thing. You must be utterly worn down.

Merryoldgoat · 08/04/2018 18:15

Why do you need a retest if the first was ok? I only had 1 both pregnancies with much higher BMI. I had big healthy babies and no GD at all. Are you showing signs?

T1M2N3T4 · 08/04/2018 18:15

If you already had the gtt and it was fine why would they like to another?
If you have sugar in your urine you could try to rearrange for when ds is back at nursery.
If they're just testing for the sake it of it is refuse until there were signs that you need to test.
Yanbu to not want to take ds along

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:39

BMI is over 40. They're covering all bases. I feel awful for not taking full advantage of all the extra monitoring being offered to me, but it's just so vile.

OP posts:
jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:40

They actually want me to do 3 GTTs. At 16, 30 and 36 weeks.

ButtMuncher · 08/04/2018 18:43

For PP - you can develop late stage GD.

I really feel for you - I had awful issues with GTT and I didn't have HG or a toddler in tow! Could you perhaps speak to your midwife and explain the situ?

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:48

Midwife knows I've been struggling. But last time I skipped I got a slightly pissy text. Dreading one tomorrow!

OP posts:
jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:49

Skipped? I mean voided the test. Vommed. Whatever. She thought I'd skipped it, I had to explain it all. V tiring.

OP posts:
jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:51

I don't have sugar in my urine T1! My urine, unlike EVERYTHING ELSE, is clear as a bell!

OP posts:
Dobbythesockelf · 08/04/2018 18:53

She shouldn't be sending you pissy messages it's not like you are doing it on purpose. If she won't listen to you, you can request another midwife or speak to her boss. I'm sure there is a solution if they wanted to find it.

Anatidae · 08/04/2018 18:54

I think you need to discuss with your MW (and franklyvwoth a doctor if you can) how you can get the data - that may be an Hba1c, it may be sending you home with a glucose monitor to self monitor for a week or it may be something else. I certainly wouldn’t just skip it - you can develop late stage GD and it would have serious implications if you did.
As a fellow HG sufferer you have my sympathy - it’s not a nice test atcthe best of tones. Having said that, a straight skip isn’t in your best interests. Approach it from a ‘how can we get equivalent data’ with your doc and they should accommodate you.

Queenio24 · 08/04/2018 18:54

What's the drdifference no they give you? My first test was a disgusting icing sugar / watery drunk that had to be drunk in a huge quantity. It was absolutely vile.
The one for my next pregnancy was like a full sugar lucosade - much more tolerable. Is there any way you could ask what they are giving you? Appreciate this won't solve your child care though, but you might not feel as grim?

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 18:55

Nine more weeks of this... Nobody has looked forward more to having their uterus cut open than me, I swear!
