To skip my GTT again?

I'm 30 weeks pregnant and have a scheduled gluten tolerance test tomorrow (high BMI/high risk pregnancy). This will be my second attempt at taking this test, I have HG and I tried a week ago, threw up the drink, and the test had to be cancelled.

So, tomorrow is the retest. But DH is away at work and I have 3.5yo DS (who has ASD) at home with me all day. I need to fast (huge issue with HG) and then spend at least two hours at the hospital having blood drawn hourly. DS isn't going to like that. At all. Initially I thought I could manage it, but tbh it's looking pretty impossible atm. DS, to others, will present as a naughty child (running off, being loud) and I'm going to be feeling grim at absolute best.

I had a successful GTT already, at 17 weeks. It was normal. I also had a general blood test last week that showed normal sugar levels. I do WANT to do the test, and be monitored properly, but it's just damn hard with all these symptoms AND DS being so full on.

AIBU to skip again? Well, I know it's U but would you do it under those circumstances?

I think it’s unlikely you’ll keep the drink down. I remember being sent for an urgent GTT in my last pregnancy following a high sugar result from a urine test during midwife appointment. I had HG and you are spot on with the high sugar/carb diet. It’s a case of eating/drinking whatever will stay down & for most of us that suffered from HG will know that list isn’t very long. The GTT came back fine but I remember the combination of having bloods done while very dehydrated & sat in a waiting room with a plastic bag breathing very deeply for a couple of hours being horrid. I did manage to avoid being sick but not a chance I could have gone through that whilst having a toddler to look after. You have my sympathies OP - HG is horrid - I hope the next few weeks pass quickly for you.

I had HD and GD (and a bmi of 21... ha bloody ha..). It was grim.

You will probably still I presume be having a labour ward birth/ the baby will be tested for sugars?

One option if you are worried is to ask to monitor your sugars or just buy a cheap blood sugar monitor. I was very worried by the test as my sugar was WAY over, however I found it spiked crazily after food but actually bounced down quite well as was not too bad unless I ate refined sugar. I did manage to alter my diet to manage it better, eg whole meal pasta had a totally difference impact to white

Sorry may have missed it but are you aware HBA1C blood test is not reliable in pregnancy so the only sure fire way to rule out ( or in) diabetes is the GTT.

My point is the maternity services are strapped as it is without people deciding they don't want to go to the appointment at last minute. You could have refused to go and your midwife would have had to make other arrangements. I understand you don't feel well and couldn't arrange childcare but these things are done for your benefit. You could go to the appointment tomorrow and explain that you will struggle and see what they say. Or ring your midwife and see if you can book an emergency appointment with her to discuss your concerns.
